I was re-painting the walls in the basement a few years back. To keep me going I listened to Lovecrafts complete works (audiobook). I just had to pause and listen to this song every now and then during the process. Could not resist!
I just saw a clip yesterday of Rick Beato interviewing Kirk Hammett yesterday where he mentions he had 45 minutes to track this solo before catching his plane home from Copenhagen.
James Hetfield has talked about how he achieved the massive guitars on this album He recorded not one not two but three guitar tracks all playing the same thing He called that 3rd guitar the Thickener And man is he right For that time period the axes on MOP are HUGE
I think Judson, could get a few of these songs into his ears. Morbid Angel - Invocation of the Continual One Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize Carcass - Carnal Forge Nile - Ramses Bringer of War
I was also 100% sure that Judson would like this one. I think it's brilliant. So monotonous, but that's all it takes here. The song surrounds me with its weird mood like no other on the record. In the long palm mutes you can hear the whole song. But I can also switch over for a moment and let my brain say, hey listen, these are just a few notes, but then I can watch myself get back into the mood of the song. Not so with Judson, it literally passed him by.
I recommend: Bathory - Twilight of the Gods Riverside - Second Life Syndrome And for this lovely gentleman with the keys - Some George Duke? Maybe Inca Roads - Frank Zappa?
It's very similar to Walk, it's just "a slow chug" type of song. A "descent into madness" type of thing, and a monster slowly marching towards you or something.
Yes, the chord changes are weird. Becaue the theme is weird. A good song builds a athmosphere, which relates to the topic. Its totally acceptable that we dont like a song. But i think its important that we keep the context, in which the song embraces, in mind. You have to show him One or Moth into Flame, The End of the Line, Lords of Summer or Confusion. Those songs are heavy and also very musical!
To me and probably a lot of other fans The song was the monster. A machine. Mean, consistent, and unstoppable. Remember when people listened to full albums? This was a character on the MOP movie. As i got older and would jam to the album, it did seem to go a little long. I thought Judson would like the subject matter too because of the way he talks about creative writing.
It’s the name of my truck. No one would think my ‘04 F-150 8200 GVW would have a 10,000 watt Alpine stereo system with 13 Alpine amplifiers, 16 vocal speakers, 6 10” subwoofers, Alpine alarm, dual alternators, dual charging systems and so much More. It is The Thing That Should Not Be.
@ appreciate it. The system in my truck has changed since the video of it I put on UA-cam. There’s more videos on my TikTok channel. Same username. Working on it almost never ends, lol. Sometimes I wish I only had a stereo system with only a couple of speakers and amplifiers, lol. Already making a plan to do some changes to it when it gets cold and I’m not working over the winter. Thanks for the comment.
I adore this piece. There's a reason why they wrote it in this fashion. Cosmic Horror is ultimately about we breaking ourselves, because we cannot handle the sheer information we get about the rest of the universe. It's like pouring 580 litres into a pitcher, that only holds 1 litre. It results in actual madness and many times suicide, because the cognitive dissonance is too great and cannot be solved. How insignificant we are to nature itself and the cosmos. We only matter to ourselves. This is probably why they wrote it in this way. In order to grasp this, one ought to grasp what Cosmic Horror is genuinely about. Your opinion is valid, just wanted to throw this in here.
Something to know about Lovecraft's concepts in many of his works revolves around madness and many times references the fallen city that is build with non-Euclidian geometry meaning it is disjointed doesn't follow standard formula...which I feel is well conveyed by the writing of this song.
I'm with Judson with this one. Outside a couple of their most powerful metal songs Metallica never did much interest me -until they released Load. Damn that is one really good rock album, almost perfect. They managed to find me after all.
Metallica with Cliff is just another band than we got after that.... Justice was ok/fantstic but after then the soul was lost. What do people want on concerts today??? The Cliff era!
This one is kind of a meditation almost. I think Judson actually did what you’re supposed to do while listening to this one but it just was in conflict with the task at hand. You’re intended to immerse yourself in it like a sensory deprivation tank and let your mind wander.
Has he been shown any "newer" stuff? Bleeding Me? Hero of the Day? Outlaw with SF Symphony? (1999 version). Even Inamorata from the lastes album is worth listening to
You guys need to hear the S&M 1999 Live version of Call of Ktulu And This song!!! I personally like those versions more as they have an orchestra play with them and it just brings that songs alive!
Hey guys. Please react/listen to "Prognan - Tri Nacjie" "Bloodbath - Eaten" "Borknagar - Up North" "Satyricon - Mother North" "Immortal - Withstand the fall of time" "Taake - Myr"
I think it’s about time that you play the entire Master of Puppets to Judson, A to Z… the album should be listened as a whole. And this is why it’s such a great album, because all the songs have a meaning and taking them alone is reducing the impact. My fifty cents thought about it 😇 looking at Judson’s face at the middle of song, it was obvious that he got bored at some point. Keep up the good work !!!
It's funny that one of the riffs comes from a Rush tune! I always thought James' voice had a Geddy-like quality to it at the beginnings of the verses, so its cool that there actually was a bit of Rush inspiration on it.
I remember hearing metallica for the first time, passing through the smoking section at high school. Hacky sack game in play and this ripper...Am I Evil...shredding the background. "Who is that?" Metallica someone answered. And so began my parental disdained approval of thrash metal. I will admit, the thing that should not be, was skipped quite often to get to a more desired song for my thrash metal high. Still a good song imo especially after I saw it played live.
14:16 I believe Judson is mostly right about this one. Funny thing is that Kirk recently said this song was written as a last song on the album and they rushed it. Kirk had to go to the airport or somewhere I dont remember but he said in the interview he had 30 minutes to write a solo. so I would agree they didn't put much effort into this one.
This track is great if you're into the lovecraftian stories, the chugginess and methodical character of it perfectly paints the image of the big ol' monster waking under the sea, ready to wreak havoc. But I can see how not-interesting it might be for someone who's not familiar with lovecraftian horror.
Day 11 of asking for Diablo Swing Orchestra. It's great that you guys can clearly articulate your viewpoints on things musically. Many people can't beyond likes or dislikes.
You're correct J.... if I remember correctly, Kirk said that they threw that tune together quickly almost as a "filler" tune. Also the first time they recorded in drop D tuning, I think.... Regardless that tune is still heavy as balls and I love it haha. J I'd like to hear ya do Jewels version of Wild Horses on the keys. I bet you'd kill that. \m/
Listen to Ripping Corpse's album Dreaming With The Dead. A lot of the songs are inspired by HP Lovecraft and it should satisfy Judson's itch for more technical weird death metal. Plus, Ripping Corpse is my favorite band. 😊
always with judson.. but dude this does not chug enough… i think this is the type of song that you need to listen more.. i’ll say that this is the type of song that makes metallica the greatest metal band ever… at the time, this was is the most distressing sounding song you could find .. so fucking dark
I love the odd timing of the riff, and the drumming is somewhat unpredictable, has an uneasy feeling and so heavy. I do agree with Judson Kirk's guitar should be louder at that part.
Jud might like this one better if he read the book. All the things he talks about are things that discombobulate and make you feel disjointed and disturbed. Like the book.
This is not a groundbreaking idea at all but I think it would be cool if you guys did a 2 for Tuesdays. Play The "hit" song and then a deep cut from an artist or 2 masterpieces or whatever because, man, I'm a life long metal head (40yrs,I just realized that,Holy sh....nevermind,I digress)and you're introducing me to a lot of new bands and music, well at least it's new to me. I think in some cases it would help get a better feel of the group's style. Maybe, idk. It would be cool. EDIT : Btw, Metallica being Kenny G metal is friggin hilarious 😂😂. Maybe not back then but damn if it doesnt fit now.
This was one of my favourites for a long time due to the downright dirty chugging. It's definitely waned though but I still dont skip it if it comes on. Not surprised it didnt grab Judson, but at the same time I also wouldnt have been surprised if he did.
I’m not a fan of crypt sermons first two albums, the lyrics are a bit much and tad self righteous, and I’m not much of a doom guy. But their new album is a masterpiece, it almost sounds like megadeth made a doom album. The concept and how the story plays out is top notch as well. Scrying orb is my favorite song and it just hits in a very unique way.
Imo Metallica wanted this to b The For Whom the Bell Tolls of the Album. It just didn't reach the success of FWTBT.... It's Drop Tuned in key...Rare for early Metallica....
I just love how heartfelt, organic and conversational Judson's piano playing is. He's a remarkable talent.
Thank you so much! That means a lot.
This song, performed live, back in the day - you know when they ALL had long hair - was SO FREAKING HEAVY!!
And people ridiculously claim the Pop song 'Sad but True' is their heaviest song, even Hetfield ...the fool!
Funny how when they were at their best the tickets were the cheapest. I personally think they peaked in the late 80’s.🤘🏻👍🏻
@@pressman1788Very original statement!
“About the heaviest number known to mankind”
@@DerEchteBold live, it is. “Pop song” takes away your whole argument.
i absolutely love this song! The 89 Seattle version is heavier than the universe!!
Oh yeah. Especially the 8/8 three string chug parts after 'hunter of the shadows is rising'. So simple but so damn effective.
Great choice btw
It’s heavy, but it’s a shame that the audio quality of that show is to tinny and washed out.
@@shmick6079 then listen to the new mix from 2018
I was re-painting the walls in the basement a few years back. To keep me going I listened to Lovecrafts complete works (audiobook). I just had to pause and listen to this song every now and then during the process. Could not resist!
I think Judson might like Paradise Lost. Very melodic, includes piano sometimes as well. And they've done a very wide variety of stuff.
Draconian times album is filled with amazing songs, I wish the would do a new mix on shades of god though, some clever stuff going on on that album.
Shadowkings
While draconis. Is my fav of their albums i knows (first five) my fav song would probably be trud belief
I just saw a clip yesterday of Rick Beato interviewing Kirk Hammett yesterday where he mentions he had 45 minutes to track this solo before catching his plane home from Copenhagen.
Wasn't that the Master of Puppets solo?
@annihilisthtx2297 The title of the clip said Master of Puppets, but I guess it was referring to the album title.
@@m2pmd70 Yup, you're right. Just rewatched the video. My bad!
@@annihilisthtx2297 "Ya know, I never get tired of hearing that... but I guess my ex-wife got tired of saying it." -me. 😁

That was The Black Album
2nd on that being the black album
Yes!! All-time favorite🤘🔥
I think Judson, could get a few of these songs into his ears.
Morbid Angel - Invocation of the Continual One
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
Carcass - Carnal Forge
Nile - Ramses Bringer of War
Non-Metal friend??
Judson is becoming a hardcore underground atmospheric Scandinavian black metalhead, day after day :D
Hahaha
Cool Crypt Sermon short 🤘🤘
Cynic - Veil of Maya reaction please. I am sure you will love it.
I LOVE this song, but I respect the honestly 🤷♀️ Fun part about music is we don't all have to vibe the same vibe, but we're all still vibing
Nice choice for the season!
I'm so excited for both Leper Messiah and Disposable Heroes listen to's. DH is gonna blow Judson's mind. I absolutely LOVE your channel

I recommend:
Bathory - Twilight of the Gods
Riverside - Second Life Syndrome

Second Life Syndrome is one of my favorite albums start to finish.
It's very similar to Walk, it's just "a slow chug" type of song. A "descent into madness" type of thing, and a monster slowly marching towards you or something.
The way they played this fucking song in seattle 1989 is the fucking awesome
Yes, the chord changes are weird. Becaue the theme is weird. A good song builds a athmosphere, which relates to the topic.
Its totally acceptable that we dont like a song. But i think its important that we keep the context, in which the song embraces, in mind.

If Judson hasn't heard Disposable Heroes, that's next! Absolute face ripper
Great song, great album.
Wanna spice things up? Give the gentleman the gift of "Bloody wood and Alien weaponry" ;) He'll love it
They played it live, you can try the S&M live version and see by yourself if Kirk nailed or not his solo 🙂
Suggestion: Primordial from Ireland. For example songs like The Coffin Ships, No Grave Deep Enough, The Mouth Of Judas or Puritans Hand, Thanks!

Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize live
This was the last song written and recorded for the album. Kirk had 45mins to record his solo before he had to fly home.
No such thing as chuggin for too long!!
Richard's brain gets it and Judson's doesn't.. This song blows away anything by the blowfish!! 🐡

Have you done Escape? there's a song off RTL that they did not like, maybe even hated, but to me is great
I think Judson would probably like the solos on disposable heroes they are melodic and more along the classical scale. Guess we will see eventually
