Minor correction: It isn't that the NES lacked the pins, just they were wired up to different ones on the 72-pin connector, which were then wired to the unused expansion port on the console's bottom (hence why a resistor mod is needed to hear such audio from a flash cartridge, or a Famicom adapter properly-wired up for the expansion audio to the NES slot pins after the mod).
This is quickly becoming the best part of my Sunday! I had heard of those analogue systems but hadn't taken the time to do the reading. Thanks DF retro, now I have a way to enjoy Dragon Warrior 4, Game gear and game boy games on one display (love the inclusion of the info regarding the new LG OLED screens in relation as that is probably going to be my next primary display!
Just picked me up a Noir. The inclusion of Sega Genesis support is really amazing. Also, the new power of the upgraded FPGA is a welcome addition to an already outstanding console. Thanks for making this video! Its always a special treat to watch your Retro coverage!
THANK YOU! I could not place this tune, even though I have listened to it alot in the past. I thought it might be Anamanaguchi until i decided to check the video comments. Thanks again. :)
I really like DF Retro, keep doing these series! It has to be a lot of work to write scripts, make voiceover, record game footage in such a long video format. Thank You.
Thanks for another great DF Retro video :) I had no idea the Anologue Nt Mini could play ROMs of Game Gear/Colecovision/etc. 8-bit systems too! That's incredible.
If any tech noobs are wondering, you won't properly see the sprite flicker he's referring to unless you are watching the video with the quality set to 60fps
Every time I see an NT mini video, I really want one. Then I remember the price tag and... Well I won't say it's a bad value for the money, but that's still a large chunk of change .
Lot of dry PC coverage on Digital Foundry and I find some of their console stuff is pretty sarcastic and condescending. But I love John. Owning a PC and gaming on it is fine. I have a half decent PC myself... plus a multitude of consoles (I don't feel like its a betrayal of the master race). But I feel like John gets the joy of console gaming and the thrill of getting a new system or game, as well as the nostalgia of dusting off an old one. He is always surrounded by consoles and games from all platforms and eras, I appreciate the enthusiasm and passion for all types of gaming he exudes in his videos. Great work John. Keep 'em coming.
FPGA's are God's gift to mankind. They certainly aren't cheap or easy to work with currently but they leave the door open for us to someday get perfect clones of SNES, N64, PS1, etc.
Digital Foundry is one of the few youtube channels that i've whitelisted in Adblock. I will happily watch a minute long ad to support the amazing content they offer.
Always love your vids, thanks John! It'd be great to see RE1 covered. There are loads of versions to discuss, and it doesn't hurt that it's one of the most highly praised survival horror games
Great video as usual! I know the purists may shun me for saying this but, why not buy a Nvidia Shield TV as it is very capable of software emulation at/up to 4k natively for the n64 and below. The price, and support for multiple consoles under decently accurate software emulation shouldn't be overlooked as a viable multiple machine emulator.
Love the nes it brings me back to my childhood. Bing a kid saving all the money I earned shoveling snow and mowing lawns for my neighbors. Having my parents drive me to the mall to buy a new game, sometimes I didn't even know what game I wanted I would buy the game with the coolest box art. Most of the games I picked up were hit or miss but I loved that I had a new game. Today's games are great and their graphic capabilities are amazing but there is not a single person on the planet who will be playing gta5 in 20 years. I feel today's games are too easily accessible which makes them all disposable. My kids will never feel that excitement for a new game and I understand that's progress but it's also a little sad.
It would be great to see one of these hardware discussions for the n64, ps1, and saturn. It would be interesting to see each consoles strengths and weaknesses with sound, video, graphics, etc. and if or how developers overcame them. I recently got an n64 and was surprised by how blurry the picture comes out compared to the playstation when outputting on the same crt television with s-video.
Good Review John :), regarding the DF minute section: Metal Storm and Joe & Mac are no slouch either (J&M if i'm not mistaken on NES features up to 5 or even 6 layers of parallax scrolling).
$450? If the price becomes reasonable, then I want one. As things happen, I'd buy a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X first. It's crazy that a NES is competing for $€£ with the latest consoles in 2018. Great stuff.
Though I think this is a good video to introduce people to this kind of hardware stuff, there are already people doing these with excellent quality and with more comparisons to similar options. My Life In Gaming comes to mind as an excellent source for this. I like the digging into old games and how they work/comparing different versions more; that's more unique content.
For $40, you can buy a Raspberry Pi 3, and run all of these games (and more), with HDMI output, and stick it in your pocket and take to a friend's house. For $120 (or so), you can buy a GPD XD, and play all these games on the go. I think the Analogue NT Mini is wonderful as a theoretical concept, but I can't see the point in actually buying one.
Looks great to have, but while I understand the price it's being sold at, it's an excellent product, I think I'd rather opt for an NES classic mini (given you can find one at a decent price) and a ps4. Maybe if that price comes down a fair bit. Nonetheless, great work done on it. Edit: okay, that Kevtris provided unbrickable firmware providing extra features covered by warranty, damn, that's great!
Jason Chuck Mars I mean that buying both you would still come out cheaper than the Analogue Nt mini, while being able to play both modern and classic games through lossless hdmi.
This is what the NES mini should have been, a console capable of running NES, GB, GBC and SNES cartridges. This is great I really want to learn FPGA programming.
I ask the same I asked on the NES Classic review. How about latency and how do they compare between each other an other products like retron and a raspberry pi running retropie? The real test is: Can it play zapper games over crt?
delaorden The Analogue NT and NT Mini using an analogue connection will work perfectly with lightguns on a CRT. The Retrons and NES Classic are incapable of light gun support, as they only output digital signals. If their signals are converted to analogue, they *might* work, but I doubt it. I’m not sure about Raspberry Pis, but chances are they won’t work properly unless they are modified to include some form of 15khz analogue output.
I think it would be useful to make an objective comparison with the best emulation can offer, since this is the best clone available, from what I've seen windows with to quality emulators can have very low lag (a lot lower than the android emulators) for NES emulation
android emulation lag has to do with both the cpu trying to emulate the console, and lastly the screen its displayed on. For example a screen could have a 1440X2560 res but with a 7ms worth of display latency. For windows depending on your choice of wrapper for graphics you can have near 1:1 speed of the old consoles or just a tiny bit of input latency (2ms) for a higher resolution such as 4K. On my S6 there is no input lag or any noticeable lag within the gameplay or on the screen via the SNES emu and the NES emu but on my buddies little Acer liquid there is plently of lag.
actually they do. its if your monitor supports 32-bit color is another matter. Play mario for example on an ancient 6-bit monitor youll notice mario is actually smaller despite having a mushroom, this is because the aspect ratio at 6-bit color scales becomes messed up. with a higher res, and more color space you're free to raster more detailed sprities and their various shifiting colors. Arcade cabinets had this back in the 80s making use of powerful daisy chained cpus which allowed full color and smoothness that no console could match. example TMNT turtles in time, the SNES version the res is lower as is the color scale because the cpu in the SNES was no where near as powerful as the motorolla 68000 (16 mhz) found in the arcade cabinet.
On your S6 there is plenty of lag, you're just not noticing it. It's not possible to implement 8-bit console software emulation without adding at least 2-3 frames of lag, and most Android emulators add 5-8 frames of lag.
cmon john i know you want it i see it on your eyes i see it on your heart a desire burning deep within you that wants to make a timesplitters trilogy video
Wichard is probably waiting for the BIOS/UEFI and Windows 10 update for Ryzen which should dramatically improve it's performance to get ahead of Broadwell-E, and fix the SMT/scheduler issues. Makes sense to do a review after then only. Ryzen is not yet game-ready but it will be, soon.
heh.. i like how you left the pricetag to the END of the video.. and even then you had to justify it by adding up all the similar hardware and mods plus the fact it can "unofficially" do extra 8 bit systems via alternate firmware. I think I would have preferred a straight one for one comparison betwen this console, original hardware, the top few consoles currently on the market, and what the costs are so people on varying budgets get a feel for where it all stacks up. Sort of a modern buyer's guide from best to worst. though yeah.. this was a.. overview? review? comparison? i'm.. not entirely sure what the focus of this was..... or who the audience is that it set out for.
Hey John, i still want to play my favorite ever game StarFox Adventures on Original Gamecube Hardware, but not in crappy SVideo Quality, can you suggest an option here that not is the Component Cable that by now costs 300$? Would be very much appreciated!
JackTheBeast88 Me. But mainly on my CRT. On an LCD, scanlines are very hard to get right, often they are too strong. On my CRT TV, it naturally has scanlines and I love them. I also have CRT monitor too now, and a good scanline filter looks incredible on that.
Holy shit, John is too good for this world. The amount of depth and quality oozing from these videos is unbelievable.
Wow. 25 DF Retro episodes. My how time passes by. Love this series, John. Keep the episodes coming, man. :)

Man I'd love DF Retro to get a spin off channel, I could watch this every day
god its not like you all have access to the internet to go see Ryzen benchmarks somewhere else, I am a PC enthusiast but I love these DF retro videos.
Keep up the good work! Always love these DF retro episodes.
Love that you included "Drifting Love" by Keiji Yamagishi in this video.
THANK YOU! I could not place this tune, even though I have listened to it alot in the past. I thought it might be Anamanaguchi until i decided to check the video comments. Thanks again. :)
Great video John, 20 minutes felt like 2. Thank you and keep up the good work! ☺
I really like DF Retro, keep doing these series! It has to be a lot of work to write scripts, make voiceover, record game footage in such a long video format. Thank You.
I've never been a huge retro gamer, but this thing looks absolutely great. I would love to buy this thing.
He's gonna take you back to the past.
To play the shitty games that suck ass.
David Francois Do you even know the reference?
He'd rather have a buffalo take a diarrea dump in his ear
@adam_odell_'official' he's the angry videogame nerd
DF retro, such a great way to start Sunday mornings.
This is the most useful video no other channel is making, thank you
Every time I see an NT mini video, I really want one. Then I remember the price tag and... Well I won't say it's a bad value for the money, but that's still a large chunk of change .

That TMNT 2 intro though, good old days
Oooohh I like that Intro
Amazing Video John! I'm always enjoying your work.
been waiting for ages on your ryzen review
I loved how in depth this was :)
Digital Foundry is one of the few youtube channels that i've whitelisted in Adblock. I will happily watch a minute long ad to support the amazing content they offer.
Always love your vids, thanks John!
It'd be great to see RE1 covered. There are loads of versions to discuss, and it doesn't hurt that it's one of the most highly praised survival horror games
now all I need is a 16 bit machine like this!
Great video! Loved the DF minute.
Love the TMNT intro!
Totally worth it for the Atari 2600 vs. Xbox comparison.
No Retro USB AVS review? NT is great but AVS is much more realistic for most budgets...great video btw
Shout-out to Puyo Puyo on your shelf!!! also great video as usual

Another awesome episode!
Hey John,
You guys should do a series on the ol Quake 3 engine games. There's a lot of interesting stuff to cover there.
Thanks so much for this review, what an amazing little system.
It would be great to see one of these hardware discussions for the n64, ps1, and saturn. Oh and if you want to impress your friends in terms of enhanced audio on the NES, show them Lagrange Point ;)
Love the Saturn start-up sound :D
Fantastic thanks DF.
22:00 Did i hear my lord and savior? Hatsune Miku?
just watched same video from the game sack...... who knows it's so popular now
I'd love to buy one of these, but the price was a bit of a turn off.
anyways, great video John
This is just too awesome! :)
I love retro! keep them making
also please make some in this style vids like top 10 games of 1995 or sth like that
HDMI mods + installation get up there, and it also had the functionality of an Everdrive, $500 doesn’t sound too outrageous
your videos rock so fucking hard, good job.
What's with all the Ryzen moaning? You can get Ryzen benchmarks every-freaking-where. Leave this sweet sweet retro stuff alone.
$450?
If the price becomes reasonable, then I want one. As things happen, I'd buy a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X first.
It's crazy that a NES is competing for $€£ with the latest consoles in 2018.
Great stuff.
4:27 this is the game that got me into gaming. masterpiece

Best Nintendo console released in a long time.
Composit video? When I was a kid we didn't have such luxury. We had to make do with RF.
David Olandersson Same here
This thing is actually more advanced and more powerful than a Nintendo Switch.
Nice to see "Vice: Project Doom" in there.
Wait... You missed what was done for parallax scrolling in Metal Storm... It overlaps.
I would have loved to hear what you would say about it! ;) :)
Here is your Ryzen review. *"It's Okay"*.
I was with you all the way up until $450.
Apprently people think that all people at DF work on the same projects.
Digital Foundary I Love Your Videos!!! I Wish I Was Part Of Your Team!!!!
Great video, thanks :)

You should do Shadowman in DF Retro :) Great game for its time and a lot of different versions to analyze :)
We need a NT mini that plays SNES cartridges. I would buy one in a heartbeat.
The person who does the code for this FPGA is coming out with his own version, that can play SNES, Genesis, etc. It's called the Zimba 3000.
I ask the same I asked on the NES Classic review. How about latency and how do they compare between each other an other products like retron and a raspberry pi running retropie?

Would love to see this compared to the Retro AVS. It seems like the AVS does the same job without the massive price
Great video guys :^)
cmon john
i know you want it
i see it on your eyes
i see it on your heart
a desire burning deep within you
that wants to make a timesplitters trilogy video
the my life in gaming, game sack, and df retro reviews are identical. i think the ftc needs to investigate.
A lot of your subscribers are still waiting for the Ryzen benchmarks DigitalFoundry.
PC gaming in 2017... Bro PC gaming is dead since 2007.
PC gaming never died
it's the biggest its ever been. Globally it's currently much bigger than console gaming.
Lol
Phil W
Are you serious? Or is that meant to be satire? You never know under a DF video.
John are you wearing an outcast tshirt?? OULAKAI!!
Man what a bunch of whiners in the comment section. " What about that?this?these? "
Just enjoy the show ffs lol.
and only $450 USD
Is there something akin to this, that uses original hardware, but for N64 and/or SNES/SFC?
This is great hardware for those that want it, I'll stick to Retroarch though.
I'd love to see a df retro on metal gear solid
while the Analogue Nt mini is cool, i still prefer the Retron 5 since i own it. but if you favor other consoles then that's cool too
Man I’d love to see you all do something on the NT mini Noir v2 but I understand you all are busy.
John, did you buy one of the 10 Gold NT's? Not gonna lie it's a very classy looking piece.

Dream machine
will you be reviewing vacuum cleaners anytime in the future?
Where is Witchard?
this is an important video
That intro was very AVGN TMNT
WHY ARE YOU JUDGING THE QUALITY OF COMPOSITE VIDEO ON A 450 QUID CONSOLE THAT OUTPUTS RGB AND HDMI
Hey John, i still want to play my favorite ever game StarFox Adventures on Original Gamecube Hardware, but not in crappy SVideo Quality, can you suggest an option here that not is the Component Cable that by now costs 300$?
Would be very much appreciated!
Loved it (the video)
My Life in Gaming did it.
Any chance a video will come out about the NT Mini Noir?
When playing from original cartridges, are all the tweaks to the video output, cropping, sound etc. saved for each individual game?
is there anyone who really like scalines?
JackTheBeast88 Me. But mainly on my CRT. On an LCD, scanlines are very hard to get right, often they are too strong. On my CRT TV, it naturally has scanlines and I love them. I also have CRT monitor too now, and a good scanline filter looks incredible on that.
