    There are more important ones that you missed. 1. Don't drag your feet on greens. 2. Learn to fix ball marks on greens properly. 3. Hit provisional as needed. 4. Don't drive carts on soaked grass. 5. Don't cheer so loud others groups get distracted. 6. And my personal favorite.... keep up with the group ahead of you, especially when a group is behind you. Golf is somthing I do that day.), it is not all of my day!

      @Paul Goodier cheating raises not helps your handicap because once you cheat your round will fall apart. It’s not a fun game if everyone is always dropping balls when they miff one. And I play empty courses not crowded ones thankfully but I will not allow mainlanders in a hurry to alter my day. If someone wants to pass fine, but people standing on T boxes when there’s nowher to go I’ll slow down. The round goes faster when everyone is comfortable to take their own time, may not appear that way but people don’t mishit as often when they ar comfortable.

      Gimmes in match play are a psychological edge because when it comes to actually having to make an important putt it puts more pressure on the other guy because he hasn't had the feel of the green or a putt.

    Did you mention fixing the pitch mark your ball makes when your approach shot hits the green? Some call it a divot and that's okay, but that's what your irons make when hit (usually) from the fairway. Either way, you should have your repair tool in your pocket and fix them.

    #11: My Golf Club tells us to scatter the divots, because the single small divots heal more quickly than huge patches or long lines.

    • @rushore1
      @rushore1 5 років тому

      That's abnormal and most likely incorrect. They should both heal at the same rate, assuming that you aren't making massively deep gouges by hitting from basically the same place.

  • @brianclark3503
    @brianclark3503 Рік тому

    Ball marks, divots, general care for the course like not driving the cart around the edge of or on the green or up onto the tee box, all far more egregious breaches of etiquette than a stand bag on the tee or walking across the green with your bag on your shoulder. Is there a weight limit? Really? This is more of a pet peeves list. Absolutely agree about phones though. Phones go in the glove compartment of the car, or set to vibrate and tucked into the valuables pocket of your golf bag. And there they stay from the first tee to the walk to the tenth tee. Then back into the bag they go until you're walking to the parking lot after the 18th.

    You can carry your bag on the green, just don’t set it down. If I weigh 200 with my bag and my playing partner weighs 250 without his, he’s doing more damage than I could possibly do. Either way footprints heal themselves quickly, just don’t step too close to the hole, bag or no bag. And if you are distracted by a golf bag, either ask the guy to move it or learn to concentrate a little better. The tee box was not like a green.

    • @edphillips636

      It's etiquette, it doesn't have to make sense. Just don't carry your bag across the green (walk aroud the edge). BTW, footprints won't heal in time for the next foursome... or the one after them... or the next one, etc.

  • @thomasslagle9715

    Here's a few more. Don't announce the trouble on a hole (ie, ob) before somebody tees off. Chronically self-analyzing your own swing or anybody else's swing on the course -- you don't know what you're talking about and nobody cares about your opinion. Marking your ball with a half a dollar. Talking (and whispering) after somebody has started their preshot routine -- yep, we can hear you whispering dude. Standing directly down the target line as somebody hits a full shot, unless you're an invited caddy or part of a large gallery. Having a preshot routine that takes more than 15 seconds. Just hit it. Moving around, playing with your phone, pulling clubs in and out of your bag after somebody's started their routine. Just be still - it ain't that hard or complicated. I'm old, but I believe they ought to teach that stuff to everybody before they let em on a real golf course.

    • @5stringdude
      @5stringdude 6 років тому

      Great additional set of points.
      I think your 15 seconds pre-shot is a bit rushed - I was always taught to walk quickly to the ball, take your time over the shot, though not excessively. My [tee shot] routine: check ground (don't want to stand in a divot hole), ball on tee, stand behind ball to check line (advised by pro teacher), address ball, swing & hit (NB: no practice swing). That's about 20-25 seconds for me (just timed it in my lounge lol).
      But I don't spend ages over putts like some - quickly line it up, stand by ball, hit it (no practice swings there either); reason being, too much time = over-thinking.

    • @thomasslagle9715
      @thomasslagle9715 6 років тому +2

      Nothing looks worse than looking at a putt every which way, picking up the ball, rotating it, putting it down again, having another look, taking half a dozen practice swings, and then still missing the putt. I always look at my putt while others are putting or are walking to the green. That way I've worked out the line (or at least think I have) and I'm ready to putt when it's my turn.

    I call bullshit on number 10. I'm 270 lbs and I've been 300 lbs so basically you're saying if a 200lb guy carries his bag over the green he is placing too much extra weight on the green? That means I'm too fat to play golf I reckon.

    Stay 1/2 a hole behind the group in front of you and nobody will give you crap. But if you fall behind that pace and someone is behind you let them play through.
    And if it takes 14 shots on any hole, golf isn’t your game, take up bowling, they have gutters so you won’t ever lose your ball. And if you’re there to drink and talk to your friends, don’t lose sight of the pace or just wait until you get to the bar, not the green. And tell the cart girl to meet you at the tee box, not the green when people are waiting behind you.

Thankfully, I play with friends who all genuinely care about each other and want everyone to do well. We often play 4 man scrambles, best ball (2 teams of 8 friends) and even though it's friendly competition, we STILL root for each other. The lost ball rule is a real weakness in golf. If you can't find it after 5 minutes you then need to go back to where you played from: a huge time sapping walk. It's really clumsy. In match play, par etc - no problem, just concede, but in Stableford and stroke I see players not going back, out of politeness and consideration for playing poartners and the field, giving away points or invalidating the round in the case of stroke. There has to be a better way to handle this, but i am not sure what it is.

    • @garethb1961

      Jeremy Morris, I think that solution generates more problems than solutions. It takes more than a few seconds! A big clue on how bad this so-called idea of etiquette breach really is comes when you consider who carries their bags. (That's the young well-trained lean guys.) Who drives a cart? The guys who generally speaking have a weight of those guys and 4-5 golf bags on top of that.

I have to disagree with #9 and 10: I carry my clubs, so if I park my bag at the back of the tee box out of sight a) it won't bother anyone, and b) it's ridiculous to think that a 45lb stand bag will scuff up a teeing area worse than a 200lb human, a riding mower, or an iron taking a divot. #10 also ridiculous that an extra 45lb bag causes deeper imprints in the green. Been playing for 26 years and never noticed the extra weight causing this.
    What is annoying, and you left it out, are people who park their bags on the far side of the green and have to run across the green to retrieve said bag and then back again to exit to the green to get to the next hole. Park your clubs/cart where you can get away quickly and not hold up anyone behind you. Also annoying, if you are the person in front of me who is backtrekking to get his bag on the far side of the green, are the balls I'm landing on the turf behind you as you race to avoid getting beaned.

We had a guy in our foursome that picked up all the tees on the tee box spend a lot of time looking for balls...we would have no one on the green in front of us on par 5 and holding guy up behind us. No 'gimme' putts if putting for par or birdie. Always 3' foot 'gimme' bogey putts if people in the fairway are waiting to hit. Maximum strokes per hole is double the par, PERIOD! No two-stroke penalty, one, yes, but not two, for 'lost ball' if search is less than three minutes. There's nothing wrong with the bag on the teebox; what's wrong is the bag or the human standing in the peripheral vision of the player. Sand and seed more than just your divot, rake the bunker of more than just your footprints. Leave the rake tines down, beyond the bunker's farthest lip, and NEVER between the trap and the green. Never toss the pin; drop it gently by holding the flag until the pin is below the knees, then allow it to drop from below the knees (tossed pins create dents and 'burn' grooves into the green). The distant putt on the green goes first before any near-by, off-the-green chips. Save the rest of us the trouble and kindly shoot anyone who parks their cart in front of the green while putting. Cigar ash on the putting green is the universal sign of a sociopathic asshole.

    I'll add two and refute two:
    1. DON'T TAKE UP TWO HOLES ON THE PRACTICE GREEN:
    When on the putting green, if you just finished putting to one hole and are moving on to a different one, move far enough away from the last hole that someone else can use it. It's rude and self-centered to take up TWO holes. This is a pet peeve of mine. You're NOT the only person on the putting green...unless, you ARE. LOL
    2. YOU DON'T NEED TO TALK ABOUT YOUR SHOT AFTER EVERY STROKE:
    I don't think this one is common, but we have a golf buddy that never shuts up about what he did right or wrong on the last stroke. He'll catch one solid in the middle of the face, but send it hurtling into the trees and say, "That was SUCH a good shot", and then shank one and call himself a moron. This continues on the tee box while others are teeing off. DUDE!! Please keep the constant narrative to yourself.
    REFUTE:
    1. TALKING TO SOMEONE ELSE'S BALL:
    I've heard this one before and, IMO, there is nothing wrong with rooting for a good result from your friends shot(s). That's not the same as saying, "Get it close " on a putt to tie or win a hole. You can THINK it, but don't SAY it. I see nothing wrong with asking the golf gods to smile kindly on your playing partner. Maybe that Karma will be returned.
    2. WALKING ACROSS THE GREEN WITH YOUR GOLF BAG;
    I stopped carrying a few years ago, but I still walk the course. I use a Clicgear push cart, so it's not possible for me to cross the green, but there is more difference in weight between people than the extra damage of a lightweight carry bag. For example, one of my golf buddies weighs 250 and I weight 175. I could carry a 30 pound bag and still do less damage then him, so this one is just ridiculous. Are you next going to suggest anyone over 200 pounds tip toe on the green to avoid damage? I am actually considering trying to carry again, BECAUSE I wouldn't have to circle the green with my push cart. Having to walk around a 6,000 to 10,0000 square foot green takes a LOT more steps over 18 holes and, more importantly, it takes a more time. It also means it take me longer to mark my ball and get it out of the way. I"ve never heard this one and it shouldn't be on the etiquette list.
