    Birds you generaly dont need to "take care of" (not sure what the english word for it is). You can mostly just hang them for a couple days, depending on temperature. They lack the stomach acids and stuff that deer have, and their stomach cavity is unlike grass eaters, so there is almost zero risk of ruining the meat from contamination. But they can be eaten right after the kill ,but if rigor mortis sets in you need to wait for it to go away or it wont be as rare.
    I mainly hunt birds in sweden, black grouse and capercaillie. capercaillie is almost like a turkey in size, early season its mostly shotgun with pointer dogs later when snow comes its with rifles when they sit in the trees. We also have grouse, wood grouse i think. The males are territorial so you can use simple whissle to get them into range of a 22LR or shotgun. Delicous birds!

  • @willong1000

    Just viewed this video today (only recently discovered Samong's content). Smart move opening the crop on a game bird to see what it's been feeding upon! Like examining the stomach contents of a fish, it helps in patterning the species' behavior in that habitat not only for immediate use, but as reference for future hunts too!
    The berries are from Arctostaphylos, commonly called Kinnikinnick (most prevalent spelling) in the region Samong was hunting. It blooms in early May and June and produces berries that persist throughout the winter. The plant is also, legitimately, known as "Common Bearberry" for reasons that viewers might easily surmise. Residents farther south, Oregon and California, are more likely to know the plant as Manzanita.

    Awesome video of the hard work that goes into an elk hunt and harvest. My wife has been hitting the local TJMaxx store here in CDA for high quality 600 count thread bed sheets and making our own game bags for many years. They are much better than the loose weave stuff out there and really help with the flies. Lots of elk hunting still to go!

    • @thistledewoutdoors3331
      @thistledewoutdoors3331 4 роки тому

      Why 600 thread count - 400 or so don't cut it , or ? Have you ever looked into buying by the yard from an online fabric store ? I bought some ripstop type of nylon that had a coating on one side - was thinking of using that but, idk if it'll breath that well because of that coating....

    • @idaho2ndgens240
      @idaho2ndgens240 4 роки тому

      @@thistledewoutdoors3331 We found high quality cotton bed sheets (the best we can find) pretty cheap at TJMaxx stores. I prefer cotton over synthetics with my meat for absorbing blood and putting a dry sheath on the outside of quarters. 400 would probably work too but it is not as tight a fabric as 600 and we have had blow fly problems with our elk meat with looser fabrics.

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 Рік тому

      @@idaho2ndgens240 You might also try dusting the meat with black pepper to deter the blowflies. It worked well to keep them out of propped-open deer cavity of a field-dressed deer while it hung to cool and glaze in hot country that I hunted with my dad when I was a kid. (Shot my first deer on a 107-degrees F day in 1965.) I haven't tried it again because we moved to PNW a little over a year later, and much preferred hunting colder country and seasons 😁!

    • @idaho2ndgens240
      @idaho2ndgens240 Рік тому

      I have heard that about pepper but have not tried it. Will have to give it a shot, next elk down. I would think it would help while skinning it out and before it gets into the game bag. Thanks for the info.@@willong1000

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 Рік тому

      @@idaho2ndgens240 You are welcome! I too believe that dusting prior to sacking the meat would be the way to go. If you get a chance to try the method, please let me know in a follow-up reply (I have YT email notifications turned on.) how it worked, or did not, for you.

    • @SamongOutdoors
      @SamongOutdoors  4 роки тому +2

      I don't know anything about blacktail hunting. The hunting basics would certainly get you through deer season over there. A rifle/scope, ammo, a backpack, rain jacket, rain pant, and good pair of waterproof/breathable boots. If you have money, a binocular with a binocular harness to add on top.

    • @Longtrailside
      @Longtrailside 4 роки тому +3

      Buy a book called blacktail trophy tactics, by Boyd Iverson. Knowledge on what you are hunting is the best piece of gear that you can have. Look and study what hunters are using and why in the videos like Samong. If you are serious you need different types of hunting gear and always prepare for the worst. This is Washington, the weather changes faster then changing diapers.Also look at the enviroment that your in does your camo resemble what you are in. You dont want to stick out like a sore thumb. If money is tight and you cannot afford any sitka or other brand names then go to a second hand store and look there. If there is no camo there then look for earth and tree tone clothes, like a green and brown plaid shirt and brown/tan pants. Get some frog tog rain gear also for backup from the rain. Also get some tic repelant this year was bad and you dont want to risk getting any type of nasty disease from them. I could go on but your on the right path by watching others online. Just remember deer or other animals dont care how much your gear costs or if there shot with a used pawnshop rifle. You can do it cheap, but you just have to work at it a lil harder than the experienced and geared out hunter.

GMU 117 and 111 have decent numbers ... 121 and 124 hold a lot of elk ... however they hold on private and the reservation.... I live in Springdale. There's 50 head of elk that travel from the hay fields near 231 across the Hancock land to reservation and back every day..... Thought I drop that nugget of info for you... Eric Nay I’m Mexican and I’ve been hunting for over 18 years with a buddy of mine who is white and I never understood the attraction of keeping the hide or the rack to be honest with you. I’m only interested in the meat. My buddy likes to brag to his buddies that he has the best hunting partner because I only want the meat and after they hear that little piece of info they tell him well shit bring him over the next time we get together so we can meet him he can hunt with us whenever he wants. I’m not sure if it’s a cultural thing but not everyone cares about the rack or the hide now that is just my opinion and I can’t speak for everyone.

      The daily limit for grouse is actually 4 grouse, but you can shoot no more than 3 of the same species. A mixed bag is required to legally attain your daily limit. This is a spruce grouse which is completely different than blue grouse.

    The best grouse
    Cut it up like you did
    Crack egg in sandwich bag
    Put grouse meat in egg
    Sandwich bag of flour ,pepper,salt,onion powder.
    Put grouse in flour
    Fry it up .
    Then since you always have rice use left over grease and flour make a little gravey to go over it all
