something about the vague monotone siren noise in the background coupled with the ticking sound keep the general urgency of Moon's current state, while also maintaining the grandiose nature of the superstructure. It's like it's saying "this would be beautiful, if time wasn't running out"
I think while Pebbles' theme gives a sense of confusion, anger, yet otherworldly and ethereal vibes, Moon's theme focuses more on the latter, while also having just a very small side of urgency behind it.
this basically shows the difference between how pebbles and moon reacts when in danger, one is erratic and angry while the other stays calm and collected
Some of the melodies are so deep in pitch that they almost sound like creaking metal. Like the legs of Moon's can, which are slowly caving in on themselves. The percussion sounds a bit like a clock ticking. The timer ticking down until the final cycle Moon remains standing.
She looked into the misty water, looking at a familiar face. A metallic face with eyes and a dot on its forehead. So different from what she used to see, all those ages ago on that projection. It was a box, a big one. Now she’s so small, disconnected from her true self. Now, she can only look to the moon.
This and random gods are some of the best pieces in the game. Mainly, it's because I think they do what rain world does best: put you in the shoes of the slugcat. Random gods is powerfull, awe inspiring, and terrifying. Perfect for the tiny slugcat's first encounter with a being like five pebbles, so far above anything we'd encountered to that point. Moon's on the other hand, feels more familiar, and less intimidating, just like an iterator would be to spearmaster, and to the player as well. However, behint the divine melody that is heard throughout the track, there is also a sense of impending doom in a way there isn't in five pebbles, becaus his collapse is nowhere near as imminent as moon's. Absolutely incredible
One thing that really sets the "could collapse at any moment" mood is the ticking clock in the background, which is probably what spearmaster is thinking when seeing what's happen to mood.
Downpour might be the ultimate piece of fan service ever made, a love letter towards the games community. I know the game has become wayyyyy more mainstream now, but i couldnt imagine this game ever getting additional content like this back when it released. The community was small, the game sold ok but not amazing, yet arguably the most dedicated and friendly community ive ever been a part of. Its insane the development of this DLC began back in 2018 i think, when the game was still pretty obscure. Yet the fans of the game would still put in 5 years making one of the best DLCs ever made for a game, period. If not THE best DLC EVER made for a game. Even when there was a good chance not many would ever play it.
fun fact: There is a very real possibility that we will have a super computer almost identical in function to the Iterators within our lifetimes. We're getting better at recreating neural tissue, AIs use hundreds of thousands of liters of water and create horrific environmental issues, and billionaires love building huge buildings. And some rich no-name's tech startup name is gonna be about as nonsensical as an Iterator name. In other words, We are living through the plot of rain world. We are the ancients. Except instead of being unable to die, we are unable to escape death.
Our society is like the Ancients. We built cities in areas where we didn't really want to live and abandoned them for better ones when those cities were no longer helpful to us. Our cultures are based off of religions that try to prevent us from true nonexistence. We make ourselves silly rules to try and make sure we're "good" to whatever higher being there is. Like not being greedy. Not hurting people. Not having intercourse for the sake of intercourse. We have abandoned much of our old spirituality. Ancient people lived before we did, and they died and sank beneath the earth. Their structures withered and eroded into the ground and were lost. Within a few thousand years, what we think of as recent history will be lost to time, like how the Ancients' lives before the Iterators are largely unknown. We are creating intelligent machines. We will build a robot that is so intelligent it can mimic and surpass our own intelligence. We will find a way to leave this place, or we will be wiped out. And the machines will be left, with no way to escape their own peril, exactly how the Iterators are. Over years without maintenance, they will decay. Their systems will fail and they will rot and destroy themselves. And then they will be buried. Rain World was created as speculative fiction. But it has surpassed that title. It is no longer speculative fiction. It is *predictive fiction*. Its story is a warning to us. And we are too late to heed it.
The song and vibe of the Spearmaster LttM just gives me a sense of dread. You can hear the sound of a ticking clock in the background of the majority of the song, like you are running out of time, and the thing is, it isn't for you. It's for Moon, one of the few creatures in this game to show compassion to you, which would make this relatively relaxed region feel like something you have to get through in a single cycle, otherwise something bad will happen.
Reminds me that acts of true sacrifice are/approach the divine, especially ones made for those we care for most. I believe it's implied (if not stated) that moon could have intervened and prevented their collapse, but chose not to for pebbles's sake
I still regret being the person to use headphones with highish volume and to hear this in game. I didn't know moon was a fan of terrifying those who visit her.
praying for the day someone makes a rock/metal remix of this. i feel like it would sound so good. like the slow fades would do really well leading into some drum session or something but alas, it is just a dream for now
I was struggling with motivation to play through Downpour when it first dropped. I was mostly just doing Jolly co-op with friends. But, eventually, I decided.. "Y'know what? I wanna start Spearmaster now, actually." because I really liked Spearmaster. It was really tough. I was a little rusty because I hadn't played since 2019, although I was sorta better at combat than I used to be probably because I have better reaction time now. I streamed it to my friend as well. And, after a long struggle, particularly pertaining Chimney Canopy, I made it to Moon. Waterfront Facility was incredible-- it's honestly my favorite region. It was so cool travelling through pre-crash Shoreline, but Moon's structure was awe-inspiring. It felt like entering a superstructure for the first time. Of course, I'd beaten Survivor years ago, but I used a guide so my experience was hampered. I went into this fully blind. And this song was the first one that stuck with me the most. I distinctly remember it. Being beneath Moon's can, floating upwards and staring into it, awestruck, as the music began to swell. and then i got stuck in that room for like the next 6 minutes which kinda took away from the feeling But that aside, this has gotta be one of my favorite songs in the track. It's so ethereal and terrifying. The exact moment is one of the ones I remember the most. It's so important to me. I've begun to honestly grow nostalgic for Downpour. It's been a YEAR since it came out!! That's crazy!! Still struggling believing it..
