Nissan says the X-Trail E-Power's hybrid performance is more realistic than the RAV4's - so which hybrid would you buy?
X Trail 👍🏻
I ordered the Nissan over the RAV 4, so much more refined than the RAV 4 which is looking a bit dated. The e-power drives much like an EV, it has great acceleration and it is so smooth and quiet. A winner in my books, the fuel consumption is not concerning as some tests on UA-cam have shown it can achieve better than what Nissan say.
By far the best Australian car journalist on the internet.
I was interested in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, but I will now include the Nissan X-Trail E-power in my considerations. Comments about the outlander PHEV, especially its' ride quality and real-world fuel economy, make this car look like a better option, even if it doesn't have a plug-in option. Thank you, I found this review very informative.
I took this vehicle out for a test drive. Very impressive. I would also highlight that I am 198 cms tall (6’6”) and like all Toyotas there is no leg room for tall people in a RAV4. The Nissan has ample leg room with approx 4 inches between my knees and the dashboard. Very uncommon in a Japanese vehicle. I haven’t made a decision to buy one yet as I am concerned about no spare tyre and I am a country driver and also the servicing costs are quite substantial. This also concerns me as the complexity of the vehicle could lead to problems down the track as the vehicle is new. Perhaps I will wait six months and see what other owners have to say about it.
Thank you for a great non biased review, thank God nissan are back on track to making great cars, they were always great but more refined, great to see an awesome challenge for the over rated Toyota
Go Nissan
Totally agreed about the driving experience... Fabulous drive.
I already ordered one with all those hyphens - can't wait to get it by next July
I’ve always preferred this type of hybrid concept over the Toyota type even though it cannot possibly be as efficient. Even the small 3 cylinder engine is exactly my preferred engine type to go with this type of hybrid. I’m not surprised that it’s proving to be good.
LOL I'd be servicing it every 4 months with my interstate driving. That's the entire reason I'd want a comfortable vehicle like this for. Every 10K is ridiculous and completely just killed the idea for me, so thanks for letting us know, and those costs. Crazy!
Plus there is no spare, or even space saver. Very risky if you do long distances outside built up areas. And premium fuel costs about 20 to 30 cents a litre more than standard regular petrol. And the battery is too small. Drains quickly. And you're left with about 100kw from the petrol engine. Run, run, a mile.
The hybrid e power drive train should be available throughout the range like Toyota not just the range topper that's part reason why Toyota is so successful
Was initially after a PHEV , but love this Nissan. Unfortunately the higher service costs and fuel consumption makes it unsuitable for retirees. Thanks for your great informative presentation 👍🏻
I got mine 3 weeks ago. Nice car, nice driving experience. The only negative is fuel consumption. I got 7,8 -8,3
How much of a difference off-road were the 19" wheels in the TI to the 20" wheels in the TI-L?
Great review guys!
Most likely ... I would downgrade to 17" or 18" all terrain tyres ... for lots of back country travels
Let's hope the thurd party accessories suppliers will create a rear door spare wheel carrier soon
Great Feedback I have taken the Nissan XTrail Ti for a test drive and this is the one we are going to choose, however, it would be nice to see the Audio system accept Android play without having to use a cord. Might wait until next year's model to see if they rectify this option. After all, not everyone has an Apple Phone, and we should have to be disavantage because of it. The car in itself looks fantastic no longer that box look as the XTrail use to be.
Wireless Android Auto is coming in this vehicle to the 2024 model on USA, it will get to EU and AUS too eventually.
Active noise canceling was unknown at the dealer when I mentioned it and I don't see it referenced????????
And I was like why John is referencing to Dane Wheel’s video. Where is Chasing cars mate? 😂
I have been a longtime subscriber to your UA-cam channel and I appreciate the valuable insights and reviews that you provide on various automotive topics.
I am writing to inquire about the availability of ProPILOT Assist Park on the Nissan X-Trail in Australia. I understand that this feature is currently available on select models in some regions, including Japan and Europe, but I am not sure if it will be offered on the Australian model of the Nissan X-Trail.
I am interested in knowing if and when this feature will be available on the Australian model. Given your expertise in the automotive industry and your experience reviewing various Nissan vehicles, I was wondering if you could shed some light on this topic.
Do you have any information on whether Nissan will offer ProPILOT Assist Park on the Australian model of the Nissan X-Trail in the near future? If not, do you know if there are any other parking-related features or technologies that will be available on the Australian model?
I appreciate any insights or information that you may be able to provide on this topic. Thank you for your time and assistance.
Best regards,
Hi, is it true that if I have an android, you have to plug it in, but apple is bluetooth/wireless? Thanks a lot
Not here to tell anyone what is too expensive or not, yes it is one of the more expensive to service but the servicing costs over the 5 years are the equivalent of a few lattes a week. I prefer servicing more often then less. But that is probably because my current transport requires serving every six months. So it’s not a deal breaker for me. We all have our priorities and I get it’s a deal breaker for some.
The is a very high quality review.
The RAV 4 HYBRID in the true world is 5.5 to 5.8 l / 100 km. The XTrail E Force gives 6.1 to 6.5.... a bit over half litre for a transformative responsive and serene driving experience, plus equipment and comfort....
A no brainer..for all the reasons you outline in the great report.
My Xtrail e4orce consistently uses less fuel than Nissan claimed it would. They could claim 5.7 or less.
Hey Nissan! Need this is US!
I’ve had my 2019 Altima over 4 years now and looking for a PHEV SUV!
I yet drove one of these, the drive experience really is excellent. Way better than the Rav-4. However, fuel economy is no where near a RAV-4 and servicing costs are a joke. However, not being a road warrior, the Model Y is even better, even cheaper to run and zero servicing costs until it’s actually required.
If they release a ST epower that would be an absolute winner! They’d have my money in a shot!
It seems they have taken this comment onboard and released one.
Someone should investigate Nissan’s claims of 6.1 l/100kms. Mine consistently uses about 5.7 even with my spirited driving. RAV4 owners expect 4.8 but say they can’t get below low 5’s. What’s going on? No one expects to achieve the manufacturer’s claims much less improving on them.
Does it have a full size spare tyre?
No… hence why the RAV4 is so so popular
No spare
Repair kit
Thanks.
Nooo John. Why did you leave chasing cars !
The lack of a spare wheel on the high end Epower is a deal breaker for me. Apparently in some other markets a spare is provided so why not In our country with its long distance travel. Also the short maintenance period and cost requires some thought by Nissan to bring the car into line with the competition. Otherwise I'm impressed with the new X-Trail,it seems to be a quantum leap over the previous model.
isnt it a 12 month and capped price for 5 years???
Ok my 5th comment (sorry) but I just realised this doesn't need to be plugged in. That IS a sick feature. I have street parking only so for something like the Outlander EV I would only be able to charge it at charging stations.
no, no. The Outlander offers the best of both worlds. You don't need to plug an Outlander in, but you can if you want to.
@@AlanGresham I can't in good conscience choose the top spec outlander over this when it's more expensive and slower. I do prefer the interior though.
@@teddym2808 Outlanders are much improved, but still a bit rubbish I suspect. If you had solar and the potential to commute with zero fuel costs it might be enough to choose them as a plug in hybrid, but I’d much prefer the Nissan (I’m a 2017 Outlander owner, it’s horrid).
@@AlanGresham Oh really sorry to read that it's been a bad experience for you.. And that was before they started the 10 year warranty, yes?
@@teddym2808 yeah, not the car I would have chosen (it’s actually my wife’s). Warranty was five years back then.
The outlander is 12 grand more. For an extra row of seats that 99% of buyers don't want. Crazy.
You can get a 5 seated PHEV Outlander which still has plenty of tech.
I would get the petrol only and drive carefully, your right foot can do wonders. But economical driving doesn't impress the ladies.
Same here. The Ti petrol is all you need 👍👍
My main gripe would be Nissans durability reliability and longevity, they have an appalling reputation in Australia and this car seems very HITECH with lots of things to go wrong, if you're buying a car to trust for a decade or more, probably not this although it seems when it's new, or for the first 3 or 4 years a remarkable vehicle, perhaps lease one for 4 years then swap it out
this system has been released in Japan over 7 years. And I been driving one epower over 2year. They are really reliable system so for from my experience.
X trail for me please.
Uses more fuel than a Hyundai Tuscon diesel. Enough said?
It actually uses less fuel if looking at official and real world figures. Also sounds better, drives better, is more refined, has better performance, more capability off road, better acceleration and a whisper quiet cabin. Enough said.
My Range Rover sport diesel uses 7.5l per 100kmh - just 1 litre more than this EV. What is the point of its EV?
The point is to DRIVE like an ev
Pointless….You need 200 000km to breakeven a regular Mhev petrol. Buy an EV. This prices are to high and do not make any sense. Marketing.
I almost had sea sickness from the camera moving so much in this video.
What is it with Asian cars not having proper door armrests with grab handles? I mean the ones that are there are designed for people with 2 inch long arms and hard to grip even for a child. I don't understand it. Every.....single....time.
This 3-Zylinder Turbo engine with variable combastion is after 100.000 *dead* .
It's the same engine as the 2.0 4 cylinder VC-Turbo that the Altima or some Infiniti's do have, but with one less cylinder, don't see why it will be a bad engine.
@@Cosmycal 1 Zylinder less is a huge difference. Particularly for a car which weighs about 2 tons.
@@yt-user7639 The car could have even 10 tons, the 3 cyl engine doesn't carry it. Just generate electric power, no direct link to the wheels. Could stays very well in the trunk.
@@mihaiachim244 🤦🤦🤦
It's too expensive. The reason why the RAV-4 Hybrid is selling so well is the price.
RAV 4 Cruiser is almost the same price, $58,600 currently and a 30 month wait. So Nissan wins by a mile.
This car seems so pointless! It uses 1.3L/100km more fuel than my 8-yr old Alfa, and doesn’t offer all that much in the way of space. It seems wayyyy over priced for what it is - why not just buy something that uses less fuel, or better yet, make it an EV! The fact that plugging in the vehicle isn’t an option at this price point seems ridiculous…
You just sound like a hater. This Nissan is miles ahead better than the Rav 4
@@odnamorvr3053 Nah, not a hater. It just genuinely sounds pointless. Why spend this sort of money on a hybrid that uses more fuel than a similarly sized regular petrol/diesel wagon, which would cost $10-20k less? Or a PHEV for similar money. Or better yet, an actual EV which could potentially be run on renewables with solar panels on your roof? The price difference between this and a full EV isn't all that substantial...
You may notice that I never mentioned the RAV4 in my comment. Funnily enough, my parents had a diesel one of the previous generation. I would far rather drive their old diesel RAV (which achieved similar fuel consumption to this new Nissan) and save $20k+ by purchasing it second hand.
To my mind, hybrids are pointless if they can't be plugged in these days... I say the same of any hybrids which don't achieve sub-4L/100km fuel economy or cost similar money to EVs.
It’s an HEV. Standard hybrid.
@@johnmartin7158 My point exactly. Those are pointless if they cost this much and deliver such minimal fuel savings compared to an efficient (much lighter!) conventional engine. For this money, you might as well get a PHEV, save yourself $20k and get a lightly used efficient ICE car, or better yet, get an EV...
@@ethanwd I personally own an 2022 Toyota RAV4 Adventure Hybrid. Safari green. I like the vehicle.if I like a vehicle I like it. Personally I don’t get majorly influenced by you tube channels. And for motorcycles I like, Triumph, Harley and Indian.
Cheers NZ.
