Yeah, you are pretty much correct. I don't really like the annotation that god is what gives us life and the conditions of that life. God hasn't given me anything, because he doesn't exist. Now, I don't know if Laura or any of the other band members are religious. But that's just my take on why the chorus isn't as good as the rest of the song.

AverageArts laura certainly doesn’t believe in god, so the god referenced in this song doesn’t mean god in the traditional christian sense. “what god gave to you” is simply the conditions of your birth, your sex, your name, your family, the place you live, and the life that was given to you. “god” did not give her the right sex, meaning she wasn’t born with it, and she had to go and get it for herself. every song means different things to different listeners but this song was written with a clear intention, and the intention was not to say “god exists but won’t give you everything you want and you have to work for the things he doesn’t give you”, but “if you were born into the wrong body, you have to go and get yourself the right body”. as for why she brought god into it if she isn’t religious, i assume it has to do with the immediate connection people make to sinning and christianity when they hear the term “transgender”. if you’re trans you’ve certainly heard the phrase “god doesn’t make mistakes” before and its particularly annoying if you don’t believe in god i imagine. this song loosely acknowledges that idea, that god mindfully did not give her something, and that she has to go and get that something now and knows that she has to even if the church tells her otherwise
