  • Ben and Owen Franks are professional rugby players for the New Zealand All Blacks, winners of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Take a peek into their lives and see how they balance training, family and nutrition.
    In addition to their sports-specific training, both brothers are dedicated CrossFitters and run their own affiliate: Reebok CrossFit Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. For them, both rugby and CrossFitting are a family affair; their father Ken is the director of coaching for Reebok CrossFit Canterbury.
    In this Part 1, the family and their coaches share how the brothers became professional rugby players.
    "From a young age, we were always training down at the park and going for runs, and Dad had us throwing all sorts of stuff," Owen says. Once they reached their teens, the boys decided they wanted to be professional rugby players.
    "For me, there was no other option in life but to become an All Black, and it was always in my head, you know, growing up and playing rugby," Owen says.
    The brothers show how hard they train and how training together has helped them both succeed.
    "Pretty much we've always trained together," Ben says. "It's pretty special ... having two All Blacks in one family. It's pretty unique."

    I played football for 10 years and started playing rugby this year and I can say without a doubt that rugby has pushed me way harder than football ever did. I played offensive line for football so I always had to rely on just my strength and footwork but playing prop in rugby I had to use all that plus play way more game time and pretty much bash into every other forward on the other team. I have much respect for rugby and the players and feel like people who bash it have never been on a pitch.

    Awesome inspirational video. These guys could hit the speaker circuit with their story. Applies to all walks of life, not just All Blacks. The belief they had at an early age even when everyone was telling them the couldn't make it (Ben left CBHS - massive). These guys have that vital TOP 10% that gave them the drive, the belief, and extremely supporting parents. Incredible, inspirational, should be publicised much wider than a UTube Video.

    I couldn't agree more bro. I play American Football and my best mate plays Rugby. We're both almost identical body-types in regards to size and weight, but somewhat different in performance. We perform in a way that adopts to our sport. I perform in shorter bursts but more explosive and faster but my mate performs with more endurance. Regardless, we don't compare ourselves. We just respect each other for our sport
    By the way mate, its the NFL not the NHL. :) Work Hard, Play Easy.

    The two games are completely different too, the stopages in NFL are different to the set-plays in rugby. set plays are tiring for the forward pack, scrumming and line outs involve so much physical effort. holding a squat position while holding up a 100kg guy x3 is insane, or jumping and lifting in the line outs is comparable too.

    That's completely debatable as I've seen it recorded at 50-66 a game especially in this day and age with the professionalism of the sport and I read somewhere that a player actually participates in a play in the NFL between 6-12 minutes a game. Which is not including the 40 seconds between downs etc. That is a huge difference. I'm a huge fan of the NFL btw, I'm just sick of the disrespect shown to Rugby players by Yanks. My reply was to a comment I was annoyed at, dont take it too literally.

    compairing them to ray lewis is very difficult as they're trained very differently to do very different jobs. Endurance wise no question rugby players have it but brute force and sprinting... would probably get edged out by some NFL linebackers / DL /TE's... keep in mind the NFL has plenty of 300lbs + guys that are extremely quick.

    Also both these guys are around 260lbs which is well below an offensive lineman's size. Average size of an offensive lineman in the NFL 330lbs... so we're talking about a 70lbs difference on these guys, hardly comparable.

    Lets get this clear:
    RUGBY PLAYERS REQUIRE EXTREME AEROBIC FITNESS!

    YOU CANNOT COMPARE TO THE NFL!

    You just said you cant compare the two sports and players and did just that in the last sentence. Fact is rugby players would find the transition to NFL easy but NFL players wouldnt find it easy going into rugby, even ray lewis, rugby doesnt just require massive endurance but also the ability to think on your feet all the time and a particular set of skills for each role, with NFL you have the coach telling you what to do down to the letter and only the QB makes decisions, etc etc

Even IF you were good as a rugby nation if it was a bigger sport, it doenst matter... coz you're so scared, as a country, to not be the best at something that you only play sports that are isolated to the USA. every proffessional rugby player has twice the skill of any nfl player... Dan Carter is equivalent to a punter... a field goal kicker... a quarterback... a runningback... a receiver and a linebacker, i do respect SOME nfl players as athletes,not as sportsman

      ive got a feeling he has mobility issues. people who weigh 120kg arent usually the most flexible. full depth squatting also isnt something you need in rugby

    • @jfarrell4150
      @jfarrell4150 9 років тому +1

      pikanoob Where did you read you don't need 'full depth' squats for rugby? I would think being able to generate force through a greater range of motion is never a bad thing...Look at how a scrum starts, that's pretty deep.

    • @pikanoob
      @pikanoob 9 років тому

      not full depth deep. theyre never really below parallel. and the angle they are at also doesnt allow them to really go full depth. go watch some scrums and its pretty obvious none of them are getting in the bottom position of a deep squat.

    • @jfarrell4150
      @jfarrell4150 9 років тому +1

      pikanoob How deep is 'deep'? Below parallel? From what I've read I would say that a full ROM helps with efficiency of movement. As an athlete it is important to produce force through a wide ROM, due to the dynamic nature of competing you very rarely are able to predict what will happen e.g what stresses will occur to the body. So it is better to train to a full ROM in order to facilitate any potential stresses on the body. In the instance of a partial squat this may reduce the flexibility in the hip joint and may result in an inability to the absorb force applied to it and may increased the risk of injury. Maximal strength over a full ROM is only ever going to be good gainz!

    • @pikanoob
      @pikanoob 9 років тому +1

      j farrell yeah im talking full ass to grass deep. olympic lift deep. I agree, one should always go for maximum ROM. however, my point is that this guy may not be flexible enough. anyone can tell you bigger guys have more trouble getting deep in squats unless theyve worked on mobility issues. I think thats whats happening here
