  • This is a detailed instructional video released by Radio Shack National Technical Support in 1986. It was provided to Radio Shack repair center technicians in order to better understand how to perform floppy disk drive alignment procedures.

This video needs more love. Best video explanation of 5 1/4" drive alignment I've seen. Now if I could just lay my hands on an alignment diskette and the ms-dos version of Tandy Drive Controller. Or even just an alignment diskette... the TRS-80 versions of the software are available online, and at least 360k drives should work on the III and IV, and an appropriately equipped I.

Guess we were only shown how to repair and aligning Radio Shack disk drives. We did have computer repair classes at Tandy and later sat in on one. They went over oscilloscope signals and schematics of computers, but not videos maybe just a hand out. (This video came out years later.) The information in the video looks good. We had to change pins when adjusting track-0 and adjusting alignment using TDC and stepping to the alignment track (with the alignment disk installed). Had forgotten the brand of the alignment disk but guess it was the DYMEX disk show since it had green writing. Good video. We relied heavily on our oscilloscopes in DC mode, don't know if a frequency counter is necessary the software today may provide all of that. Had to adjust a disk out of alignment, because when you tightened the nut it would come into alignment. Maybe equivalent software to TDC to control disks can be used today.
