    I am disappointed that you don't seem to realize what is Pogacar's mindset, Johan. He already stated multiple times that he wants to win ALL big races, that is what moves him, instead of just winning 5, 6 or even 7 Tours, he wants to be a modern day Eddy Merckx and to achieve that status he will need to start winning other Grand Tours, the World Championships, keep winning monuments every year... We should be glad that such a talented rider like Pogacar has this mindset instead of just focusing on the Tour like others...

    During the Legends pod w/Bernard Hinault and JB1, The Badger talked about being driven by the pure joy of crushing his rivals whenever he pinned on a number. This is the feeling that Tadej Pogacar has for bike racing. He has talked about smashing world tour races as if they are video games. That is what is fun for him, and what motivates him. He is not the guy that wraps himself in bubble wrap and bases his whole year on the TDF, and he doesn't give a hoot about how he is judged in the press if he doesn't win it because he is doing the races the that he wants to do. He is there to give his best effort for himself, his team, and his sponsors, and then he will be satisfied with the result.

      Yes i like that too, if the stars of cycling are riding/valueing one-day-classics as much as big stage races it might help incease the cycling audience and have them watch more that just the TdF. One day races are usually more exciting and unpredictable anyway.

      Actually, sucha triple is not rare, it's even unheard of. There never has been a triple crown with regards to winning all 3 GT during the same calendar year. Mainly because until the mid 1990s the Vuelta and Giro partially overlapped so a rider could only ride either one of them but not both and gaining such triple crown in GT could thus never been achieved. That is why even the GOAT Eddy Merckx only won 1 Vuelta because he preferred to ride the Giro of which he won 5. So if Pogacar would achieve this feat (Giro-Tour-Vuelta in a a single year) he would be the first ever to win them in the same year.
      The closest thing to a triple crown of cycling that has been achieved has been winning 2 GT + WC in the same year, namely Eddy Merckx (1974, Tour + Giro + WC) and Stephen Roche (1987, Tour + Giro + WC).

    Pogacar wants to be the best cyclist ever, better than Merckx. He cannot accomplish that goal unless he wins the Tour and the Giro in the same year. For all of you, winning the tour was your only goal, which you you accomplished amazingly. For Pog, his goal is the be the greatest of all time.

      @@2011hwalker That’s just sour grapes loser talk. You can only race the riders who are there with the form that they have…in 1987 Greg Lemond was recovering from being shot and Bernard Hinault retired at the end of 1986, clearing the way for Roche’s 1987 triple crown. In 1989 Lemond benefited when defending TDF champion Pedro Delgado missed his start time in the prologue ITT by over two minutes. Just this month MVDP benefited from all of his major Belgian Holy Week competition being wiped out in a crash the week before. That’s just bike racing.

Are you seriously suggesting JV will be anywhere near their best in the TDF when he sustained injuries resembling that of a serious car crash. He hurt his *lungs* among many other things. He wont be fully recovered until the autumn/winter. Of course JV team and sponsors are 'encouraging' him to be at as many races as possible for the rest of the year but his mere participation doesn't mean he will be the JV of 2023. Far from it.

    What's bigger than winning the TDF? Wining the Tour and the Giro! if you have a rider in your team who can win the TDF only if he prepares only for this race, then it is wise that he does not participate in the Giro. But if you have Pogačar in your team who follows the highest challenges, then participating in both races is the right decision. Remember, Pogacar last year planned poker wins, Flandres, Amstel Gold, La fleche Vallonne and Liege Baston Liege, and TDF and more, this was his plan! How many riders do you know who can set such a goal? He did not quite succeed because he was exaggerating, but he learned something from that lesson, now he knows that Eddie's times are gone, this year he competes selectively, just like Remco and MvdP, the pioneers of modern selective cycle racing. To reduce the number of races will bring him more freshness and energy reserves for important races so he will not burnout as we saw last year and, consequently, this will bring him more resistance to heat, which is closely related to the burnout syndrome.

    • @cuebj
      @cuebj Місяць тому

      Maybe bigger in the eyes of cycling fans but, for the world, only TdF exists - a rider could win Giro, Vuelta, Worlds, a few monuments in the same season and non cycling just shrugs its shoulders and asks, "Did you win the TdF?" Hence, TdF swamps sponsorship, clicks, TV News

    • @cuebj
      @cuebj Місяць тому +2

      GCN has been discussing this. Philippa Yorke had some insight for them. There are numerous factors and statistics follow chaos mathematics with clusters and empty periods to mess up with mean, median, mode, normal distribution. More riders are fitter meaning bunches are bigger so more riders chasing the same space and riders behind can't see the badly parked motor bike. Disk brakes make for later braking. Aero positions have higher saddle and lower bars putting more weight on the front wheel. Pain killers let them ride but dull their senses. Steeper slopes up to separate riders with super bikes and 24 gears covering a wider range than, eg, 53*42 plays 12 * 28 mean steeper slopes down. There is more road furniture than in the past, etc. Then there's the general ethos or ambience of cycling that demands riders carry on when other sports would stop - exacerbated by amateurs getting some sort of vicarious pride in doing a tough sport because the pros are so tough. It becomes a bit like Rollerball and raises questions of the ethics of spectating it

It isn’t a reflection of the best rider anymore. It’s a good rider w the best team. The classics and other disciplines are becoming far more indicative of the best rider. I don’t think the riders think it’s as important as they used to either.

    I for once disagree with Johan's insights. I don't think Pogacar will have a better chance to accomplish the double than this year given the lackluster competition at the Giro and the severe injuries x suffered by Vingegaard as Pogacar's only real nemesis at the Tour. Winning the Giro and the canTour in the same year will be a feat for the history books. Since Pantani (before Lance's first Tour) no has been able to pull it off and even highly era dominating cyclists such as Froome and Contador didn't succeed in their respective attempts, considering how demanding it is to stay healthy and keep that peak of form for so many weeks.

    Hi gentlemen, am I the only one who thinks that Tadej is completely doped... And do you think that it is normal that Mauro Gianetti is CEO from UAE and someone like Matxin is Pogacar's personal coach... While we all know that everything about these both gentlemen has been about doping for their entire lifes ?
    Gianetti caught on using EPO himself in the past... And Matxin who only worked at teams where riders where doped. (Mapei with Museeuw and Bartoli etc etc etc.) And they both worked together at Saunier Duval where Piepoli, Cobo Acebo, Ricardo Rico and Iban Mayo raced to name just a few of the doped riders..

      I don’t think you are the only one. Lance likely thinks they are doping now too, but it’s in his and many’s best interest to keep the money train rolling.

    Almost certainly, 'No'. With Vin out and a relatively weak Giro, he can win Giro without over-stretching himself and win TdF even if Vin there as Vin will lack condition. Also, he just seems to like racing everywhere

    I think johan knows what’s he’s talking about seeing as he directed one of best cycling teams in the world pogi should skip the giro and focus on the tour average cycling fans don’t care who wins the giro just as Jonas shouldn’t have almost killed himself in the tour of the basque now has to probably miss the tour! Most people don’t care who wins Basque Country it’s all about the big dog ie the Tour!

    • @BerreD79
      @BerreD79 Місяць тому

      Yes, you’re right. People that don’t care about cycling or don’t know much about its history only know the Tour de France. . Even more reason not to focus only on the Tour! And just focusing on one race seems way too risky with all the crashes these days. (see Wout v Aert)
