Pink Floyd Time Intro with Rototoms
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- The Rototoms were mic'ed from the rear and run through a board with some added reverb. I had to use 8 Roto's to be able to cover all the notes used for this intro. They are from low to high E3, F#3, A3, B3, C#4, E4, F#4, A4. The way I arranged them was for no special reason other than this is how Nick Mason had an 8 rototom set up in one of the very few pics I could find of his kit with rotos. Roto sizes are from left to right top row: 8,6,6,6,8. The bottom row from left to right are 10,12,10.
Finding each note was a little tedious as there is limited information on the notes used for this intro on the Dark Side recording. As a matter of fact what info I did find was that they only had 2 Rotos in the studio at the time and had to lay several tracks while re-tuning the toms to cover all of the different notes. In the setup I have, the notes are as follows from left to right on the top row: B3, E4, A4, F#4, C#4 and from left to right on the bottom row: F#3, E3, A3.
The heart beat is just a deep kick drum on the e-kit. I just use my regular kick on my acoustic set when I'm at a gig. I went over this intro many times before deciding to try to add the kick to it, in order to cover the heart beat on my own, which proved to make things a lot easier when playing out live, without having to be dependent on the heart beat of a sampled recording and only needing a several minute sample of "Tick Tocks" to play along to that can be cut as soon as you break into the song. I originally uploaded a vid of me playing along to the actual Dark Side cut but the audio was muted due to copy right issues. The music in this version was recorded using an inexpensive Casio.
Samples of the rotos are also available for free thanks to my friends at alanvista.com
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day...
Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town....
Frantic tick tick tick tick tick tock
Shorter of breath and one day closer....
waiting for someone or something to show you the way
The best cover of the intro that I've ever heard.
its also the only cover of the intro youve ever seen lmao no one looks this shit up

Great job man!
It sounded perfect, until 1:42.
Great stuff
I never thought “he’s using rototoms” in all the times I’ve listened to this. They were just “The Pink Floyd drums”.
That works too. I think anyone would no what you were talking about!
Perfect thought!!

I believe Nick Mason hadn't heard of 'rototoms' until not long before he decided to use them on DSOTM!
Id actually heard that he didn't know what they were, but a set were left in the studio from a previous session and they decided to throw them onto the track.
However, there weren't enough for the whole piece so they had to keep retuning them for different chord changes, and compiled the part on the album from multiple takes. Idk how accurate that is, but i think id heard it on an interview with Alan Parsons, who of course engineered DSOTM.
When i got my first summer holiday job ever I worked my ass off in a hay gang all summer...At the end of summer I bought myself my first ever stereo and this was the first tape I played in it that night in my bedroom with the lights out...It completely blew me away

Thank you!
Affordable, space savers and tunable for any song. This guy must have practiced ALOT to get it so right.NICE!
Beautifully done. It's a crime more people have not seen this video. I think you should have made it longer. Thanks for posting what you did.
Thanks for the kind words Stickman. There is a version of the entire song on my channel.
I fell in love with music when I was four years old, when I heard Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. It remains the finest album I've ever heard, and I have a deep love of music. I bought a saxophone when i was 30, as my first instrument. How I used to love to play over the intro to Shine On, and there's nothing like playing with other musicians on your wavelength. But I had to stop playing, jaw issues, broke my heart, I was just getting the intro to Us and Them under my fingers.
Over the last few days, I've been considering buying a Yamaha FGDP-50, I'm not a drummer, but I did have a lot of fun with a Rock Band Portable Drum Kit some 20 years ago.
I watched your video.
And I just burst into tears with the thought that maybe one day I could do what I've just seen and heard you do.
I ordered the FGDP-50 an hour or so ago.
Thank you.
This is my inspiration, motivation and first goal.
I think I'm going to have a lot of fun.
Oh, and bless you for the info in the description. I'm going to be referring to your video a lot in the future, so again, thank you.
I have spent quite a bit of time working on this intro. Probably about 3 months in total. I was quite adamant to get it as precise to the original recording as possible. I usually have not been too picky trying to cover tunes with the various bands I've been in over the years. As a drummer, you can really get away with a lot when it comes to covering a tune. I would usually take a few hours (tops) to learn a tune to play out live. But for this tune... for this one, I had quite a determination to cover it right. The time I spent researching Roto-Tom tuning and figuring out notation, then buying more Rotos on ebay to cover all the different notes, only to find out I didn't have the best size Roto's for their given notes I was trying to achieve and had to buy even more Roto Toms (I think I have about 12 now) I really had to question myself and wonder: AM I INSANE? Though my Wife was a very good sport about it and very supportive through the whole process. I feel deep down inside she may have thought so.
All that said, it is posts like these that make it all worth while. I can't express my appreciation for your post, and to know that the end result has effected someone like yourself in the way it has. It makes every minute of my time and every dime spent on this project worth it.
I had to look up the FGDP as I was not familiar with it. That thing is freaking cool! I might get one myself someday. I'm sure you will master it and I would love to hear anything you put out there. Please send me a link or post it here if you ever do.
@@Robocomofo Thank you so much for your reply and sharing your stories.
Unfortunately, the FGDP-50 has a faulty battery, I'm going to get a refund. I have multiple joint issues, I was having problems reliably activating the kick pad. The actual drumming bit was good, real sense of satisfaction getting my first lesson under my fingers.
The good news is that I'm still very inspired and the money I'll get back on the finger drum will be used ho other equipment.
I found a really cheap MIDI over bluetooth 25 key with 4x2 pads and some 360 knobs. I will be able to use it with GarageBand on either my iPad or MacBook. I also note that eight rota tom notes are required for the Time intro....... (big grin).
I then watched a video about the Alchemy Synth in GarageBand. Now having some idea of how to play with it, I had a go, just on my iPad, blew my mind some of the sounds I was generating.
I didn't mention to you that I have an eight octave range MIDI wind controller (Yamaha WX-5 in blue). It was my silent sax, I didn't want to touch it because of my jaw issues.
It can get power from six AAAs, so it will power a wireless MIDI dongle, therefore wireless to GarageBand.
I think I have a way I can play it without giving myself issues again. I need to get the sax mouthpiece off and swap it over for the recorder type, then I could use a MIDI pedal to make up for the loss of reed expression. Can't get the damn mouthpiece off, going to have to talk with Yamaha.
If you're thinking I could use the MIDI pedal as a kick drum pedal, I'm ahead of you there: I think I could still have a lot of finger (no thumbs!) drum fun on the 4x2 anyway, but the pedal would really open playing options.
There was also something I could do on iPad that I couldn't on the keyboard I'm getting. I think it's a type of MIDI expression called "radiating," that requires touch sensitive keys; a pedal might substitute the effect.
I am touched that you would ask for links if I post. I get insecure about my level of musical ability when I'm in the company of experienced musicians, sometimes I felt like a fraud. I was active on the local open mic night circuit, everyone was very kind to me and musicians I respected were always happy to jam with me. The thing I did have going for me was really good tone. And I was damn well better than the woman in the band The Zutons. But she looked better in a short skirt.
I promise you that *when* (not if!) I'm ready to "release it", I will somehow make it happen that you see/ hear me perform the rota toms intro. If you've got a link to the tabs and/ or pad layout for a 4x2, either one or both of those would be super helpful.
Thanks again.
@@buxycat Unfortunately, I never made any tabs. I memorized the entire piece one section at a time as I thought it would be difficult to follow along to sheet music/tabs since the rotos were not set up in a conventional order. If you noticed, the highest note is the center roto on the top row and then the notes get lower as you work your way out on either side. Here is a link to another video I made where the camera is stationary on the rotos so it is easier to follow along.
ua-cam.com/video/_9takZDTW_c/v-deo.html
Also; I'm going to leave another web address here that you may or may not already know as It's also in this video's description. It is alanvista.com and it has a plug-in there that is called Royotoms which is a sample of the Rototoms in this video. I'm not too savvy about all the midi stuff as I've been mostly acoustic my whole life but as I understand it, you can download these rotos to your preferred midi device. We had spent a lot of hours communicating remotely with me sending lots of samples of each individual tom with and without reverb so the user can have as much control over the samples on their own equipment as possible. Check them out if you haven't already.
Sorry for the delayed response. I have been away from home for a few weeks. I saw your response but wanted to wait till I was back and had time to write. Looking forward to any links you send. I would love to hear your work. One thing great about the art of music (or any art) It doesn't matter how you get it out there. As long as you get it out there, you express yourself to others.
@@Robocomofo Hello my friend and thank you for your reply.
I've been on quite a journey down various rabbits holes since we last spoke, and a change of equipment: I would have given myself a thumb issue with the kick on the finger drum; it also had a faulty battery.
I got, and returned, other equipment.; however my journey has lead me to an Akai APC64, arriving tomorrow.
Thank you so much for the VST link, I had already found that. It's going to take some time to learn the equipment and software (Ableton Live Lite 12) however one day I will get to the point of being able to play the rototom intro. I will post it one day, it's possible that other stuff will appear first, I have some ideas flowing, one germ of an idea that I'm really excited about.
Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. It means a lot to me.
As a lover of this song, and a person with NO drum skills, I find it absolutely incredible that Nick Mason created this amazing, iconic, EPIC drum section. As a non-drummer, the timing, rhythm, beat of this is a level not known to mortal men!! How did he choose to hit those drums at those specific beats?? Brilliance !!
It's been a long time since I've read about it, but there was some article on creating the intro and how they found a couple of Roto Toms lying around the studio and proceeded to play around with them, recording a couple drums at a time then re-tuning them to lay more and more tracks with different notes. That I can tell, there are 9 different notes in the intro so they would've had to lay at least 5 different tracks to cover all them notes, if they only had 2 roto toms.
From one drummer to another, way to hold it together when the right foot accidentally left time. Seriously. Your recovery was flawless.
Okey thx. Now i have to listen the full album to calm down my pink floyd syndrome. YES

Sounds ace! Although, that snare is so disappointing after all that build!

Nick Mason has received criticism of his technical ability at times, for example, Andy Newmark was brought in on one occasion because nick couldn't play the odd time signatures convincingly, but in terms of pure rhythmic creativity, he's one of the all time greats and this intro is one of his finest.
I remember reading something about that. I can't remember what tune it was. I think it was one of the earlier albums. I'll have to go look it up now.
@@Robocomofo it is "two sun's in the sunset" from the Final Cut. Andy Newmark is an amazing drummer as well btw.
@@homomorphic Thank you!
He's one or those guys like Ringo who's no one's idea of a technical shredder but he's absolutely the right drummer for the band and a huge part of the band's sound
@@homomorphic I think this also happened in "Mother" from The Wall. Jeff Porcaro was hired to play the part because of the changing time signatures.
I love that it is just a small electric kit with just a giant set of rototoms next to it.

I'm like 90% sure he bought those toms just to play this song. Well done👍
I can't imagine how long it must've taken to remember that series of strokes.
It's easy to remember. When you're obsessing over learning this it just becomes part of you while lying in bed looking at the ceiling. In the shower. At your desk. Behind the steering wheel at stoplights....everywhere, all the time. Once it's burned into your brain you never forget it. In my case that was almost 30 years ago. Still my absolute favorite thing to play on my kit. I've always wanted a room and a kit big enough to do it to lights. Each tap lights a drum head.
I mean it's just like learning the riff on any melodic, rhythm instrument. If you have the song and melody in your head - plus there's only a handful of notes available there on those drums so to bcan have a very strong mental memory of what drum makes what pitch
A lot of drummers know exactly how the drums will sound and what guitar chord comes next, so they can at least pair them that way. the same way a pro saxophone player or something can play any song just by listening to it.

Nick Mason, the man who performed this with floyd, would be very proud
Thank you very much. I read somewhere a while back that Nick didn't care much for musicians that covered tunes note for note and would rather they add their own creative input when covering a song. So anyways; I just always thought he would not be very impressed. Ha

brilliant coordination! I don't do my own bass for the heartbeat...what a challenge you lay out here! You absolutely cook!
Great that you shared the tuning with your viewers too.
Glad to help out. I really didn't intend on covering the heart beat (bass drum) part. I was practicing the regular rototom part and in between prax rounds I thought I would just play around with the kick drum to see what it would be like. I ended up getting a lot further into the intro without having to stop, than I thought I would. So after that. I thought to myself... I think I can actually do this. It's a lot easier than you would think. You can do it too! Just keep looping that whole intro part. Once you get the first part down, just keep going over the second part where it goes to double time. After a while, your foot will just start going through the motion without thinking about it. Once your not thinking about it, your golden. Good luck!
Love the sound of roto-toms. The three-pack I added to my kit is my favorite thing I've added to it so far
Thanks for this video! My brother Ty was a studio drummer and I remember him as a kid practicing this song for hours playing by ear. He only had 3 Roto Toms so it wasn’t perfect but he got that heartbeat on the kick going and he had the timing on the toms going and we were watching and listening through a haze of bong smoke in our parent’s garage! God damn I miss that son of a bitch and those days!
haha. Awesome story man. Thanks much for sharing it!
I heard an interview where they said they only had one rototom to do the whole intro. They had ‘roto’ it to get the different pitches.
:-O
That's just not possible
To get all the pitches that quickly youd have to turn it fast enough to head the pitch shift as you hit it
Not to mention how they're all tuned to perfect notes
I also might've just r/whooooooosh-ed myself but I'm not entirely sure
I would pay this guy to do an hour long version of this for me to fall asleep to :) Id love that!

Varieties of modern music instruments. All have their own charm.
I have no drums, but I've done this one thousand times with my fingers and whatever I could reach from the couch or the driver's seat over the last 30 years.
Cool. You must have the pattern down without even trying!
I like how you added the bass drum to play the heart beat. I dont think Mason could play that beat along with rototoms drum solo lol
sho yonesato that takes a lot of coordination
The second beat of the drum is actually from tape delay on the album so live they used a backing track
On the 94 tour, Gary Wallis on percussion played the heartbeat on a Dauz pad.
You know, I think you're right. Sad to say😂😂
well provided you had the rototom part memorized it wouldn’t be too hard considering the heartbeat is pretty much always on a downbeat and never syncopated
I've only seen a couple of these videos covering that and your was by far the best!
Thank you! Appreciate it!

I bought my Rototoms in 1982 along with my CB700 set. The Rototoms were supposed to come with pinstripe heads but showed up with blackdot heads instead. I let the sales guy weasel out of replacing them and they’re still on the drums to this day.
I received my first set of roto's as a gift in 1982. It was a set of 2 (12" and 14") Then got a set of 6,8 and 10 to add on later. They all came with Black dot. I really don't remember when I changed them all. I guess it was gradual as needed. I didn't change them all at once.
