    Simon Baker nails it. He is the big dog in the room until Jeremy Irons shows up, then, he is extremely careful in what he says and how he acts. Precision acting.

    That moment in the movie she sees stanly tucci for the second time, and they talk awkwardly and she asks almost shyly: Do you have kids ? That just so conveys the toll it took, the best years of her life for nothing, no kids, no family , just a failed career and money. Great acting.

    This dude killed his role. Great actor 1st time I’ve seen him in a movie and he played the alpha CFO role like a boss.
    Remember them in the movie saying :
    WHO WAS THAT GUY. How old is he looks like he's fifteen years old.
    Will emerson: He's like forty.
    Peter: How does that happen?
    Will: Oh it happens all the time. Except to me. Kid's a fucking killer.
    Well he executed that impression perfectly- did an excellent job of playing that role- exceeded expectations. (credit to the cuts made by the director/ producers as well to build him up they depicted him well)
    He needs to be cast in more roles like this. Left a powerful impression: Shark in the water.

      I agree. The scene with Tuld where she got fired was brilliantly understated, there was a real tension for the character when she didn't know if she was going to be carrying the can, and then..release. Subsequently there was the symbolism of her with her shoes off and hair down.
      I've also seen commentary about her character's backstory in covering up the earlier risk assessment, which is touched on tangentially in the first meeting scene, when Rogers says 'we've discussed this' and Cohen shuts him down immediately until they get the young bloods out of the room. You had to read behind the lines, but it wasn't just Jared Cohen who was 'a killer'; she fired Eric Dale before he could blow the whistle on her. People like that don't need to raise their voice to be dangerous and frightening.

    By far a unique movie that captures a reality that many of us in the world of finance, lived during those turbulent days in 2007. The different personalities that support many strong philosophies not only in financial companies but everything. At the end everything is about making the numbers and never loosing money. The good, the bad and the ugly, don’t matter at all. Great movie with very limited budget. Congratulations.

    These two brought their "A game" to every scene they were in. Riveting performances. But, as happens so often, interviewing actors about their work can be similar to interviewing a rock musician about their work. It's better just to go directly to "their work".

    Irons was mesmerising, but Simon stole scenes in this movie. Demi had a difficult role playing an over promoted employee, prepared to turn a blind eye during the boom years to suit her bosses needs in order to advance her career at the expense of better able employees. She didn’t have much screen time, or script to achieve that. But what time she did have she conveyed the part well on screen and added to the narrative the director needed to make the movie work

    It is a crying shame that Demi Moore is an underrated actress, only because of her age. She still has a lot of talent even though she's older now. At least , she is on TV for now. I can't wait to read her book. I think it will be an interesting book to read and I hear that she has lived an extraordinary life story! She should have no shame at all because she has had a very successful career in the past and I'm sure she is very proud of herself for being that successful. She really truly deserves to be a Hollywood Legend , no doubt about it.

      She’s a very good actress. Her work in several projects has been very well received. She’s taken a lot of different roles over the years and I always think she adds something to every film, even when she’s not the lead. To me, her character in a Few Good Men was her best role but I think she’s probably most proud of GI Jane- a role where she probably should have received more credit.

    I used to be a broker. Promotions go to those who bring in the most money to the firm, salesmen. That’s how you get salesmen running the show. They know NOTHING REPEAT NOTHING about investing money. It gets worse every year. If they don’t know what to do they invent a new product and sell THAT. There is more than a quadrillion $ in derivatives in the markets and NOBODY knows what they’re worth. Not a happy thought.

    Liked the show. Have the DVD. A different take than with 'The Big Short.' This movie suggested that the 'random walk' might be cause of the 2008 or so crash (you can look up the 'walk' bit for yourself), while the 'Short' suggested that some clever folks learned that Uncle had tried to boost the housing market (wouldn't y' just know it ... with a short term law?) that ran its legal course. Baker’s right about the fascinating human hierarchy involved. The movie keeps revealing that some wealthy guy has a boss who makes even more $$, and has more responsibility, and that boss also has a boss, on up to the guy (Jeremy Irons, brilliant) who is deferred to by all.
    Irons is also the only one who can, and must, make the decision that will save the firm financially but destroy the careers of most of the people in it, as well as screw over their counterparts at other firms. And as cold hearted as the top guy is, he’s actually making the right decision, under the circumstances.
    His coldness is actually the reason he can even contemplate making that decision. But if he decides differently, or dithers, the outcome will be even worse for everyone, at least within their firm.

    • @javieru53
      @javieru53 2 роки тому

      You are missing a very important point on the role of Irons. He has bosses too, which are all the investors that actually keep him as CEO, any fail towards those investors and he is out, he knows that and he is very very aware that he is not there for being the smartest but the most sagacious. Which is extremely different.

Of course Irons/ Spacey are towering, but beautifully crafted asides by Simon, Zachary and Bettany etc nail it for me. Simon's " perfect" when they can't find Tucci and his phone is off, in the first meeting; Zachary's expression in " sir..I'm not sure I'd put it that way"... when revealing the meltdown to Irons in the partners' meeting. I've watched it a bunch of times because I find that kind of stuff fascinating. I would have liked a bit more explanation but I guess that wasn't the movie to do it. I had no clue what a tranche was. I had to look it up. "The Big Short" explains a bit more but it doesn't go into enough detail for me. Powerpoint slides don't get the job done. I'd like to see the whole process using people from the time a mortgage loan is made to when it's split up into bonds, rated, and sold. I'd like to see what happens as you follow the money and a revenue product like a mortgage or CDO is sold to an investment bank and how long it takes for them to get it off their books and sold as a bond to an investor. I'd like to see what happens you you trace the whole thing back from both the owner who pays their FHA or VA loan as well as the person with the interest only, no collateral loan that has a massive payment after like a year they can't make to the bank that granted the mortgages.

    What humane angle it showed from their point of view? They all (except for Sullivan maybe) played mean, cold hearted, money worshipping individuals who would throw anyone under the bus to save their dollars.
    Investment banking epitomizes the superficial, selfish world that we are now living in.

    I think demi Moore and Stanley Tucci were wasted... not required... this movie belongs to Jeremy Irons, Simon Baker and Kevin Spacey.

    • @sharkfintech5893
      @sharkfintech5893 3 роки тому +1

      I'll take the other side of that "trade", and very much disagree. The film has a marvelous enssemble cast, and the Moore and Tucci roles, while not long on screen time, were pivotal.
      And while we're at it, I would add that Zach Quinto (Sullivan) and Paul Bettany (Emerson) were terrific also, in both believability and in making the most of their roles. The movie only works as a brilliant, complete whole because those 4 actors helped make it so.

    • @bluesque9687
      @bluesque9687 3 роки тому

      @@sharkfintech5893 Zach Quinto is also the producer, isn't he? Yea in that setting he is not bad... the other bloke who hangs around with him is more like how many of us are when we start out, and he played it very well... Paul Bettany was ok... but the three people who gave it all the weight and gravity, IMO, are Irons, Baker and Spacey-- the film would fall flat on its face without them!
