@@mattiacalzari5908 that's a great plan, and as long as you can get the slice deep fantastic. But for many other players reading this, the slice, especially off a hard serve, is a very difficult shot to hit deep unless you've had a lot of practice
Keep the return deep but don't drive it, back off on the power to give your side more time to advance. The more time it takes the return to get to their baseline the more time you have to move up to the NVZ.
Great observation. Many players go for the hard low over the net return, but that's the most difficult return to get deep. And even if you do get it deep you better be fast to get all the way to the NVZ
There are players that have very stronger serves but one of the most common mistakes we see there is players standing too close to the baseline so that when they hit the ball they have to move backward to do so. It's difficult to hit the ball deep if your energy is moving in the other direction.
Perfect reinforcement video....although I "know" this, in the heat of the game I sometimes forget the importance of the higher deep return, especially against bangers with spin serve too. The slo mo was excellent and the explanation the same Great Vid thx
I agree with you completely, you don't see very many short returns or serves in the medal match at pro events. (other matches not so much) Regardless many non pro players want to down play the importance of these fundamental strategic concepts. If you are playing with a player at any level who knows how to take advantage the short return you are doomed.
CJ, thank you for the advice. Keeping the ball deep, makes your opponents stay back. This stops the banger from smashing the ball back @ you. I’m going to try this when I play again. Everyone should sign up for CJ & Tony’s seminar. For even greater advice to help you improve your game.
Thanks for this. I realised my returns are causing difficulties for myself through transition zone. Instead of going 'macho' with a hard drive return, I will now just play a control high and deep return giving me time to get myself to nvz. But this might be different against a weaker opposition. I would 'attack a weaker player' and warn my partner about executing my 'shake n bake' attack.
Great realization on your return of serve. And yes when you are on the serve side you might be able to use the shake and bake against someone who consistently returns short
Comments are fair, good feedback. Granted that most people, especially dudes like me, have short attention spans the comment it’s long is fair. Good on you for responding respectfully
When Megan had to backup to return the serve is what caused her to hit a weak return. If she would have been back farther she could have move forward into that deep serve.
Moving your energy in the opposite direction makes it more diffcult to hit it deep. So in this instance possibly. We can't see the stroke that was made so that could be a contributing factor. But as I mentioned there were at least 10 points from both Megan and Rachel that started this same way because of the short return. A few they won, but most of the time they were under such stress right from the begining they couldn't recover.
Hey Better Pickleball, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made. I loved your videos. I was wondering if I could help you edit your highly engaging shorts videos for you

Great strategy, but that’s not the biggest thing in playing a good game more about how you hit the ball .bangers know how to hit topspin,a effective shot ,hitting soft only let bangers hit harder.pickelball is changing ,so learn how use topspin .learn proper swing technique.
Learning how to hit specific shots like a topspin is important to the game of pickleball, you are right. But understanding the framework underneath those shots is absolutely essential as well!
@@BetterPickleball I like the length of the video and the depth and thoroughness of it. I've been trying to figure out the lead cause of my poor shots and of course, how to fix it. You can't do much for your rec play partner, but you can drill and improve. I have to say, in that first clip, a very strong, deep shot hitting just in the corner of the box is a very tough risky shot is also very tough to defend and will always be. But a deep, high return would of served her well.
@BetterPickleball - Thank you for this post. The video length was perfect for all levels of players who want to improve their game. As a 4.0, I appreciate observing so many areas for improvement in slow motion, multiple times. Knowing that a short return was the basis for the “bangers paradise,” I focused on Callie’s deep serve to the backhand, and how far back Megan was standing from the start to return the serve. This video reminded me of the importance of a deep serve AND the importance of a deep return. Thanks again for the value of this video!
Where is your return of serve target
I usually try to do a deep return at the court's "T" with a backspin slice effect

Good stuff! Serve Deep, Return Deep.
Always!
Outstanding. Thanks for emphasizing the importance of a deep return of serve!
You bet!
I agree, returning deep is important. It gets challenging when your opponent has a strong serve, whether deep, fast, or deep and fast.

Indeed, this is a lot easier said than done, which is probably why we are seeing this illustrated even by the pros.

Thanks CJ!!!

Well made points. Thank you.

The top pros return deep and start further back to have momentum going into the return of serve. This helps them get up to the kitchen more naturally.

I understand the importance of staying behind the baseline for the return, but then how do you handle an unexpectedly short serve?
Helpful video.
Glad you think so!

On deep serves ...YOU NEED TO SHORT HOP THE RETURN.....Also.....Slice returns have a tendency to land short
Slice returns do tend to land short, you're right. We maintain you should push those returns deep, forget about the fancy shots!
1. Return was low and a too fast.
2. Not enough time to get up to the kitchen.
3. Was attacked with a drive that kept Fudge off balance.
Exactly right!

cause there to slow to the net
👍
The returner looks like she's flatfooted on every return.
Possibly. But the low slice return is likely more of the culprit.
Too long a video for a simple but important concept. No need to stretch out the video.
Not looking to stretch a video but try to ensure people understand the concept. Thanks for your feedback
