I've been living in mainland China all my life and to be honest, I do see a lot of children relieving themselves in public with their grannies watching behind them.
Back in the 90's it was very common for teachers to allow kids to relieve themselves here in Portugal in public. I was far too embarrassed to do that, but mostly because my Dad raised me not to do that. I can imagine a lot of these PT teachers were from uneducated homes. As a mainland Chinese person, I condemn such acts of letting kids relieving themselves in public spaces. It is a sense of disrespect and it creates a bad image for all the sensible and more civilised mainland tourists who are trying to enjoy themselves wether it’s abroad or in the mainland itself. Recently I’ve seen a father letting his four year old child relieve himself and I felt angry and in front of everyone I shouted at him for being a bad father.
well, it is the result of your communist party dbad education. every country that had/has communist leadership, has horrible people that do horrible things. for now, it seems the people that orchestrated the bad civil education are busy ruining the western world, but they will be back. this is why china should escape the evil communist system now, while the people behind the communist party are busy.
I mean yeah, but don't feel ashamed, It's because the adult was too stupid and made the child relief In the platform of a MRT Hong Kong Station. It's not you.
i understand how frustrating it can be not being able to have easy access to a bathroom, and how difficult it is to hold your bladder when you really need to relieve (especially for kids) but the least you can do is apologise and clean up thd mess. The fact those kids didn't even offer to help the staff member is disappointing
They are still quite young, not everybody can easily take the opportunity help. It’s like an 8 year old offers to do something to show kindness is cute but the other way round you be calling them Low-lifers although they still young
I could do a mistake once and be in a fight or freeze state, I couldn’t apologise that easily. Even from young to now, it’s the same thing! So come on mr, get on their shoes. You might not know when you nearly trip off some banana peels.
2:12 "The Availability of public toilet facilities in Hong Kong MTR is a real issue" Almost every MTR exit has a shopping mall, When get u get out of the exit there is a shopping mall and in the shopping malls there are toilets
Not everyone can hold themselves for that long. Do you think this child wanted people to stare at him, a stranger to scold and record him? Nobody wants that kind of attention for something everybody goes through and will forever go through till the day they die.
How tourist would know that? At least they didn't leave and stayed at the "crime scene", so I guess they paid the fine and apologized to the MTR worker or something.

Mukesh Mukundan Also, at least let him do it on paper or newspaper, not on the floor and after that, help clean it, not just idly stand there like a statue.
this is the result of the communist educational system. as a citizen of a former communist country myself, i can relate to the guy. in communist countries, when you need a toilet, you just let your nose lead the way. but because MTR toilets in hong kong don't smell from 1 km away, and because they are clean, they don't look like toilets. so the poor man thinks there are no toilets around, so when he can't hold it, he goes where ever he can.
trust me not all stations have bathrooms, i asked the attendant he said they have ones for staff only and i had to wait 15 minutes for the shift change to occur so i could go with the guy. I ran to a mcdonalds near by to use their toliet instead.

As the kid, he should have voiced out his tummy ache to the adult asap. As the adult, he has the responsibility as the children guide to know where important places like the toilet is and also to constantly let the children know to approach him whenever there is a problem and not keep it in. And for myself... I understand that unfortunately, there are times when we can't hold it in at all. It strips dignity away, yes. Gosh... It's impossible to judge on such things as it could have easily happened to anyone and we are not the kid, who knows how much pain he was in before doing what was done.
@Pranjal Srivastava every kids in my country doesnt defecate in the open. We are taught since little that its not a proper ethiquette. Why cant children in China do the same? India seems also need the same ethiquette education.
It happened in Hong Kong too. Also, we can see a mainland Chinese say on UA-cam, "The people of Hong Kong are easy to bully (qifu)". Many mainland Chinese have a SMUG attitude towards the rest of the world, especially to more developed outposts of Chinese such as Hong Kong and Singapore. But condescendence comes from INSECURITY. Having been the victims of bullying for 1OOs of years many Chinese feel the need to assert themselves. The Chinese should self reflect. They will be the richest nation on earth soon. But they have no allies. No friends. No fellow nation that they do business with in South America or Africa, respects them. The Chinese lack leadership skills and that's largely to this arrogant attitude that they are beyond reproach. They should question their own behavior instead becoming angry at criticism.
Not all Chinese are bad. Some mainland Chinese are bad. Half my family is from Hong Kong and half is from Malaysia. I was born in Australia, and from experience in both Malaysia and Australia, no one pees in the train station.
Something quite similar happened to me in Melbourne. I was in Melbourne for my holidays and my cousin's convocation in 2018. While at his university, we needed to go to the toilet, so we went. A Chinese woman suddenly rushed into the toilet and without closing the toilet stall door, she pulled down her underpants and started urinating. My grandmother rushed both me and my aunt out before things got too awkward for all of us. I'm a Chinese girl from Malaysia and this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and inappropriate for anybody in the world. It's just disgusting.

It's either the adult's lying for convenience or the boy really couldn't keep his feces inside any longer. The lack of public toilets is quite an issue, imagine another 2 or even 10 others having diarrhea at any of these stations.
The Chinese government needs to implement health & hygiene lessons in their public education curricula, from kindergarten on until the end of high school. The recurring topics ( the human excretory system & elimination process) should include increasing depth of scientific content. Children must learn that proper personal hygiene habits are not just required social etiquette, but are enacted to protect public & personal health. Unacceptable "relieving anywhere as one needs to" endanger public health as well as their own ( e.g. defecating, urinating, spitting & vomiting in public ). Many rural adults in China did not have the opportunities to finish high school. May be they didn't learn enough science to know better. So it is the government's responsibility to re-educate them. Educational videos about the serious health threats to the public ( please see detailed description posted below) should be broadcast on prime time TV shows, popular social media, ali pay & village/township adult health re-education programs. Finally, if China truly wants to be a world class, civilized, cultured, respectful, caring & knowledgeable society, it must instill such core values in each individual citizen so that he will act according to his inner aspirations.

Letting someone else clean it up made it even worse if that kid is your responsibility and you let him do that then you need to be the one to clean it up
This is very bad and sad and shows that this kid’s parents did not teach him anything. It also reflects how bad the culture of mainland is and how bad the parents are at teaching their kids.
Trinh Nguyen u clearly don’t understand the video. He isn’t the parent of the kids. His probably a teacher bringing students for a overseas learning trip. I mean u get the jizz of the story so congrats
Gottakill Gt I was not just referring to this video or this incident but in general. I had many students from mainland and many of them were studying here in the US and were very spoiled and some were very arrogant and thought they can do whatever they wanted. Of course they did not use the toilet in public like this but you get why I said what I did above. I DO understand the gist of why a number of mainlanders and their children act the way they do. I know that man is most likely not the parent but I was referring to that kid’s actual parents. Of course not all mainlanders are like that. Some parents still teach their kids well in spite of having just one child. I have some friends from mainland who are very well disciplined and are nothing like this at all.
Did you even see the video, the man said the kid had an upset stomach and had diarrhea. If you ever had a diarrhea, you would know you couldn’t hold it in very long. So even going to toilet before MTR would not help if you have diarrhea. Yes, the man and kid should apologize and offer to help clean up.
When I was an eight year old my parents never let me relieve myself in public. They usually force me to hold it till they can find the nearest toilet. When your are eight, you should learn how to be a bit more mature and not cause a shock to the public.
If this is done in your town all the time that’s a problem. Research The Great Stink of 1858, poor hygiene mixed with neglect breeds widespread diseases that can cause another epidemic
As someone from Shanghai, we see that too. And we would tell them to get out of Shanghai. But that of course doesn't help, that's the reality we have to live with.
What are you talking about. I've peed myself in class as a 6 yr old. Cuz I held it too long. It's just kids. If a kid says I can't hold it. What's a adult gonna do. Stuff his peehole with a cork? I don't think the teacher or the kid was being disrespectful
Sometimes you just can't hold it. If it really was an emergency, I think I would understand. However, I would apologize profusely and clean it up myself. If the boy just didn't want to wait and the adult told him it was fine, then that is a definite "No"!!! I have a nephew who has issues going--the need to go happens urgently with little warning. He has accommodations at school that allow him to run out of class without permission, and was placed in a classroom right next to a restroom. We're still working with doctors to find a solution. Finding a diagnosis and effective treatment is a process. This is why I say that I *think* that I would understand *if* this, or something similar were the case.
Yatharth Satija is that the station they were at? Imagine being surrounded by tons of kids screaming and hopping around and one kid with an upset stomach, would u take the time to find the hidden toilet? I’m not saying this is right but people need to be more understanding
How else? Just walk by like it's not her business? It's her country, and she cares about hygiene. She hasn't been violent or rude imo. She wasn't even close enough to touch the man.
I agree. It’s ok to speak up and point it out to the boy and adult, but holding a camera to their faces seem a bit much. These days ppl want to record stuff publicly to add an extra layer of shame.
Growing up in Hong Kong I understand why this was issue, because Hong Kong was always known for being very clean and littering there was a type of offense. I really appreciate them for how clean they are!
STEVE 8 year olds should know better by 4 year old. And the adult never should have let it happen in the first place. There are plenty of washrooms around...FREE to use.
The guy even said the boy had a stomach ache. As someone who has had diarrhea in the past, it's literally something you can't hold. If it's coming out, it's coming out. Besides, as some people already mentioned, some stations don't have toilets.
This is NOT acceptable in all other cities in China, so this woman really didn't have to emphasize Hong Kong and used this against mainland China. Discrimination stinks as badly as this behavior.
Well, I think both the adults have very big problem of solving issue. One adult bring the probably entire class of students in a foreign place, and it's hard to control a group of people sometimes especially when "emergency" occurred like this case. For the lady, she is even worse, the first thing is she doesn't even concern or try to give a helping hand but first thing she did is take out her phone and record the situation and started to blaming both the adult and the student. If you tell me she has no discrimination on the mainland Chinese, sorry, I don't believe that. I think it's more like a retaliation and she got the chance to name and shame the Chinese.
When I was a child, i remembered seeing a chinese mom asking theit maid to get an empty plastic bowl so that his son can pee in it. And then the son proceed to pee in the plastic bowl in public supermarket. He was standing in the trolley and the maid was holding the bowl for him. Its disgusting.
As a Chinese person, even though I've never done such a thing myself, it is certainly very embarrassing. I hope the world can understand that China got rich very quickly... And many people despite suddenly having more wealth, haven't received equivalent amount of education. This will change in the future, the next generation will be better.
Their parents did this to them and they're doing the same to their children, and their children will do the same to their own children, and the cycle continues unless one decides to stop it!

I don't know what the tour guides were doing but I went on tour a few times and tour guides will bring us to the toilet quite a lot of times during the tour and on each stop they will tell us where the toilets were(if he didn't, we ask), before we got on any transport we were also told to go to toilet first or they would ask if anyone need to go cuz the next journey is long. If this happened, the tour guide did a really bad job. He said the kid had diarrhoea so in this situation is understandable but it happened so often that I do not believe that excuse. Cannot blame the kid, in all of this cases they did it after they were allowed to do so by the adults.
To those saying that mainland China is deplorable, remember that this is the act of an individual, and that one act does not define an entire race. I can assure you that this is not a common thing that just “happens” in mainland China. Also, this really shouldn’t be used to propel the whole China vs. Hong Kong debate. It was the act of an individual and it just happens to involve two people from two opposing sides of the debate. Similarly outrageous things have happened all over the globe, but usually these acts are not taken to reflect an entire race or culture.
A thank this lady for being the voice of reason. I am Canadian, and unfortunately you see this often, and people incorrectly attribute this behaviour to all Chinese people. But this behaviour is not representative of typical, well educated people from China, rather it shows the minority, which most Chinese are ashamed of.
A lot of MTR stations doesn't have a public toilet. BUT if you really feel it's an emergency to use one, you can go to the customer service and let the staff know and they will bring you to use their staff toilet. They will guide you there and wait until you are done. HK mtr staff are very nice to let you do that and even though these people are only tourists but they still could have asked for help. Rather than wait for the situation to turn out this way...
I can understand the sudden urgency in one's digestive system. However, they SHOULD CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES in these circumstances. It's only justified.
The woman videoing is more disgusting. Yes China and Hong Kong are different because there will be washroom in every station in China( at leatlst 10).Instead of scolding the man and taking a fine and quickly cleaning up like most mainlanders will do, she is filming the child to disgrace him intentionally and shouting on top of her lungs disturbing the public.
Its mainly about their culture they grew up on, not if they are chinese or not. Hongkong and Singapore's populations are mostly made up of chinese too, and we don't do these kind of stuff, education about etiquette is key.
You are comparing 1.4 billion sample to a few millions sample. Statistically wise do you know how many more outliers it could have with a 1.4 billion sample compared to a few millions ? Singapore needs to educate more on its citizens with math apparently

While I do agree this behavior is not appropriate, the woman is full of bigotry. Can you imagine that language being used anywhere else in the west? "This isn't (other territory), this is the UNITED STATES. You want us AMERICANS to clean up after you?" Simply saying that the behavior is inappropriate is enough. Majority of the mainland Chinese population was only recently lifted out of poverty within the last 50 years, most people being farmers and only the last 2 generations really taking off with wealth. People are slowly catching up to understand these things. I thought HKers being a people who have been "civilized and developed" would know to use less hateful language.
Man i was 8 too but I’ve always known not to do this in public, let alone a busy station. Shows you that even children in mainland are all wrongfully brought up.

In this incident, I agree that person telling the kid to relieve themselves are really in the wrong and especially when he is with a group of other kids no matter the reason. As for the Hong Kong lady, no need to scold the guy that loudly and long. All she had to say was, “I understand when kids have to go but please next time do not have your kids relieve themselves as it’s a health issue.” No need to go all out there and ask if he is from mainland China, that they made a mess and a Hong Kong person will have to clean up their mess. I saw other’s comment regarding Hong Kong people I have to say that I do find Hong Kong people extremely rude. I was born in China, migrated to the US at a very young age and grew up here in the state. My first visit to Hong Kong was at 11 with my family and was rudely yelled for standing on a sidewalk curve in a parking lot and minding my own business by some Hong Kong blue collar worker. In a civilized culture, a bunch of grown adults yelling at a 11 year old girl that is just totally uncalled for. If you need access to the sidewalk or needed me to not stay in that area all you needed was to ask. As the years went by, every time I had to stay in Hong Kong I did not have a pleasant experience; if I don’t need to I always avoid going to Hong Kong even though my family owns many properties in Hong Kong. Don’t get me wrong, the food and shopping is great but I could live without everything else.

Many mainland Chinese have a SMUG attitude towards the rest of the world, especially to more developed outposts of Chinese such as Hong Kong and Singapore. But condescendence comes from INSECURITY.

One chinese tourist also did that in the Philippines. Relieving himself in a historical place. 😑
What do you expect? Its a historical place, maybe he just want to create a new history, lol

don't blame the kid, to my eyes this is Child Abuse
uno reverse card Nobody’s blaming the child, everybody is blaming the adult for not helping.
You gotta watch your kids, man. I never did things like this when I was 8.
I still to this day cannot understand how this is a thing... it's so ridiculously shocking how people think this is okay to do
Man it's okay to do it as if emergency urge can't find toilet
I'm suprised people even still visit China at this point
The child must have controlled for a long period and as they are tourists might have found difficulty finding washroom.....and when u can no longer hold ur back there's nothing much anyone can do....I feel sorry for the kid having to relieve himself there....the trauma he has to endure for rest of his life is far more worse....
Well, they could have asked anyone or the staff so they'll guide them to the toilet
Absolutely
Yes China and Hong Kong are different because there will be washroom in every station in China( at leatlst 10).Instead of scolding the man and taking a fine and quickly cleaning up like most mainlanders will do, she is filming the child to disgrace him intentionally and shouting on top of her lungs disturbing the public.
yes she is really a bit--h
I’m more shocked that the boy didn’t have social anxiety or was too scared to do it in public in front of everyone 😳
Nice pfp and same
Its mainly about their culture they grew up on, not if they are chinese or not.
Yes as a Singaporean, I got to agree with what u said !
The man who let the child do this is also accountable for the crime
Boys do you think this is appropriate?
One boy *nods*
Well. A man gotta do what a man gotta do.
Actually, she was asking if they thought this was wrong. Or to be more exact, if they thought there was a problem with what the child/adult did.
The others were waiting for their turn. lol
She's asking if there's a problem. The translation is off.
AHAHAHA cute
as a hong konger i just can't belive how someone could do this in public
Bruh you know they're tourist maybe they don't know bathtub and shy to ask people where bathtub, I been experiencing this in public as u can see the guy can't handle the situation.
”This is not mainland China” that sentence kinda triggered my button even tho he did wrong.
she bothers me more than the kid tbh
emma c same...
They stations should have toilets
The kid should've had a bit of shame & held it or dealt with it before they left.
The teacher is a disgrace.
Stations do have toilets
They do have toilets. As the woman said, he could've just asked for help. There's no excuse for this.
I'm amazed at the reporting by SCMP; it's so balanced and fair. I always thought it was a mainland publication, is it from Hong Kong?
Man i was 8 too but I’ve always known not to do this in public, let alone a busy station. Shows you that even children in mainland are all wrongfully brought up.
Do this in India
People just walk by like nothing ever happened

I don't care if you always do it in China but if you go outside of China please do not bring this attitude. Disgusting.
If it really was that big of an emergency, at least run outside and find a bush, like inside an MRT station is NOT acceptable
Nobody should be defending this behaviour. The people defending it are probably public shitters themselves.
Right
Elkin Shiner just defence!
I've lived in China and I've seen this kind of stuff
I agree with you
They have a violent warrior / triad / military past. The people are so rude there at the airport. Imma like fk HK. I'm not transiting here again.
I agree to you have mindful brain :)
