- Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! If there are any errors in this video...well, whatever. I finished editing last night at 3am.
This video took a lot of work (50+ hours actual work + 16 to edit :s All done in 6 days). It might not seem like it though.
Credit to Brain&Force for the ornament idea

Nile talks about lab safety: • Chemistry is dangerous. - Наука та технологія
this man is so sweet. he talks about his mishaps so forgivingly and honestly. its a real virtue and the mark of an excellent scientist: to learn from mistakes not fester in them
I like science because people who do research and labs learn that mistakes are common. Really humbling
didn't realize until you pointed it out. definitely going to work on being this way toward myself this going forward
:)
impressive work!
NileRed That's Holiday Dedication! Thank you!
:D
chemist-tree
why didn't you remove the foam core chemically?
Make cooking videos, it would be hilarious :D "the percent yield is about 85%, I'm quite happy with the final product"
"Some of the pepper must have gotten lost somewhere along the way, but i don't mind. The Dijon mustard stayed in solution and didn't precipitate out." 😂
Little did you know back then.....
And I may have ate some
Yeah approximatly 34% of pasta, 63,7% of water and and 2% of oil. The rest is salt, potassium hydroxyde, potassium iodate and disolved dioxygen.
Nile needs to make this a thing!

Friquido thanks
Uranium is not as dangerous as you think, all the layers block stuff. Nothing will even happen if you touch it.
Wth does this even mean lol
My girlfriend has a somewhat odd obsession with radioactive things. This describes her perfectly.
@Friquido r/whooosh
Bismuth crystals or geodes would also make great chemistry ornaments (plus be works of shiny iridescent art ;-)).
That would be geology.
Alexander Brasshaw no they meant chemistry ornaments because they’re made using chemical reactions. They only somewhat look like geology stones.
@@alexanderbrasshaw6932 Bismuth crystals are elements, not minerals. So yes, it'd be as chemical as mercury.
He was worried about mercury because it was very dense, and bismuth is also pretty dense, being denser than copper.
And then UA-cam is like 'Hey, Christmas is right around the corner... Time to recommend this video again!'
no but srsly that was genuinely fun to watch
hi, the festive spirit is here
didn't realize this wasn't a new vid until i saw your comment lol
@@shadycactus6146 Me too.
I GOT THIS VIDEO RANDOMLY. IT MAKES NO SENSE COMPARED TO WHAT I USUALLY WATCH AND YET THIS GUY IS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i got recommended this in july, so i guess it's christmas in july time? lol

The chemistry department at my college has a tree just like yours, filled up with test tubes and molecules :3
Cool!
The taking apart light bulbs instructions are because they can be used to smoke meth. Anyways, Merry Christmas. I'm looking forward to your videos in 2017 :)
or anything else. kkkk.
oh, well that is something I never thought of. I thought most people were just using it as decorations or something
I am glad you don't smoke meth
@@NileRed so pure
Nice
Also pretty would be some small Bismuth "hopper" crystals in the epoxy, instead of the uranium ore.
Very true. I didn't even think of that
"I'm very incompetent"
You said that a lot in this video
Relax man xD you're doing fine!
Resin, huh? Should've asked Peter Brown.
hey, another peter brown fan
I was about to suggest peter brown do the resin work untill i found this comment.
Hahahah thought of him too
glad to see i'm not the only Dip It fan. Dip it #20: Chemistry
Or Nick Zametti...
Fine looking ChemisTREE you got there.
I see what you did with those words.
Ouch
Fuck off
@@dusanurosevic1202?
I love how grouchy you are all the way through, and then so pleased with the end result.
"Due to a combination of incompetence and lack of proper tools..." Sounds like every project I work on!!!
me to
Due to fatal combination of blunt trauma to the head and several organ failures.
NileRed: I'm going to be careful not to boil this.
Cody'sLab: _Holds uranium in his bare hands_
Uranium isn't that dangerous, you can safetly hold it in your hand and you won't die. I guess he don't want it in the air because it's never good to breath in metal.
@@alvinsundberg2732 actually your skin is a good buffer between your organs and radioactive material. if you breath it in it will stick in your lungs and give you 24/7 radiation internally. End cause is lung cancer in 10 years.
coming back to this in 2019 for my yearly fill of chemical christmas
using a 3rd cup for resin is a common practice for mixing it. kind of just gives a fresh start and won't leave unmixed resin on the sides of the cup left over for pouring
That is true. I just subconsciously did what I saw some other people do I guess. Only later did I question myself.
NileRed Yeah I personally only did this process when mixing silicon rubber because you have more time to work with it and I think have the mold material mixed as cleanly as possible is more important than the resin.
Captain Limabean
I still don't understand why
@@NileRed I think the idea is to pour part 1 into part 2, then pour that mix into the third (empty) cup to avoid having un-activated resin on the side of the final cup.
Yeah. So many helpful people telling you how to clean out a light bulb...
So... What was the final yield? Merry Christmas!
at least 25g of holiday cheer. :3
Sketchup is the worst possible program for a 3D model. It doesn't make manifold objects, which is why they failed.
God I hate Sketchup so much
OMG ikr in DVC we had to use SketchUp and it is SO FRIKIN HARD TO USE ASDFGHJKL
I'd rather use tinkercad than SketchUp, sketch up is just terrible..

Yes, But actually no.
Most beautiful Christmas tree I've ever seen, or should I say Chemis-tree :D
No but honestly really good work Nile Red and merry Christmas everyone!
I purposely avoided using the pun :p
Your tree is positively GLOWING with Cherenkov radiation.
After 5 years. Nile red is more popular than the chemical itself. If you look up the name he pops up first. You are officially dope as hell nigel
Should've asked Peter Brown for some advice lol
Man, is wonderfull how all channels i watch fuse togeter!
"But I mean... Whatever."
That's the sound of a man who's given up.
I like how your methodical voice and very thorough explanation of your actions stood the same throughout you decorating the tree. It really felt like reading a scientific paper on christmas preparation.
6:35 --> the moment i realized how old this video is
Thanks for uploading on Christmas day. Happy holidays, love this channel.
Happy holidays to you too!
Your dedication is amazing, you deserve so much more views/subscribers
You did a great job there, a lot of effort, but worth it at the end.
Thanks!
Awesome vid man - It really shows how much effort you put into making these ornaments! Merry christmas to you :)
Thanks! :)
"wow there is alot of guides for taking apart light bulbs im surprised" i see what u did there
The tree at the end looked stunning! Great work dude, I can really see you put in a LOT of hard work but your ornaments look super cool and you should be really proud. Awesome!
Merry Christmas Nile! Love the video, especially the bromine and mercury ornaments!
I think small spheres of alkali metals or something encased inside of an acrylic block might look nice.
I admire and respect your dedication... absolutely amazing!
thanks!
*me:* Isnt urani-
*nile:* Yes it is radioactive
*me:* well wouldn't y-
*nile:* No this does not mean I am going to die
Happy New Years 😊 I love the concept and execution of this video and I am definitely going to try and make some of these for myself
I love your dedication to what you are doing! Keep it up bro
It's adorable watching Nile fail at arts and crafts but the effort he put in is... just.. awwwwwwww
+Teodora Lovin ha thanks
You're awesome! Thanks for sharing all your material! Keep up the good work!
Love the ampulle with mercury and bromine.
Just amazing to hold something so toxic in youre hands ;D
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and everyone else!
Happy holidays to you too!
I found a necklace when I was a kid that had mercury and some red liquid in it encased in glass. It wasn't bromide though...else it would have gassed all over. Instead it just spilled mercury one day when it fell and broke.:D
“And why would you like uranium ore?”
“Christmas decorations”
“W- what?”
Congratulations on 100k. Been watching for a while and love your channel even though I know nothing about chemistry. Keep it up and thank you.
Thanks!
Thank you for your hard work!! The ornaments look fantastic :)
NileRed Merry Christmas. Thanks for all these great videos that entertain me daily and give me the courage to continue my studies.
The vials look so good after polishing ! Very professional :)
How to be Nile Red:
1- make awesome chemistry vids
2- do something that you're 'not entirely sure why [you] did it that way'
3- say absolute nightmare every once in a while
It's hectic how much work you put into your videos. I really appreciate it
How about ampuoling iodine? It would be interesting to demonstrate how it vaporises when heated, without letting any escape
It would just cover the whole ampule and after that you wouldn't able to see anything happening.
not sure how i overlooked this video for so long. REALLY enjoyed this one. thank you
I love how even the decoration of the tree is described as a chemical process xD Great job there =D
You just hit 100k!!!
Keep up the amazing work!!!
Thanks!
Of course! UA-cam recommends this brilliant video again during Christmas. I've watched it several times over the years, but it is always fun to watch again! :P
Merry Christmas, Nile. Love you man

24:34 “as long as you don’t carry these around in your pocket everyday you should be fine” umm didn’t you put one on a keychain?
Dude that is so cool! Those are like the coolest ornaments ever
Absolutely beautiful 💜 precious little ornaments and love the keychain idea. Hope you had a lovely holiday Nigel (sorry if spelled wrong)
I really appreciate your effort. Thanks a lot. Keep the good work up! Love your vids +nilered. Greetings from Germany
Nile You ingenious bastard, just from the thumbnail I think these are amazing ornaments.

You're a grade A scientist with grade D logistics
Merry Christmas NileRed!
absolutely lovely! :D
You're the best, thanks for all your amazing videos. and... nice tree!!!
Merry Christmas... awesome video :D
Very creative! I loved seeing the process, even though it seemed to cause you a lot trouble xD
i have mad respect for how much effort you put in to make every video.👍
I wish this got more views for you. This was so cool to see crafting done in a science way!
This is so funny man... the way you guided us through these "nightmares" ... lol'd so many times
As an artist, you are a good chemist.
Awesome video man and Merry Christmas.
That's cool man ! And the 100k subs coming too, it's like a good end for this year :D
Merry Christmas, Nile!
The tree looks great; you did a fantastic job with the resin with the tools you had; I hope my first resin project turns out half as well!
All the best in the new year!

Thanks! I wish you luck on your project
you're the best! I really like this ornaments they look pretty good ;)
Happy christmas man :) love the vid
Merry christmas! thanks for all the awesome content and the inspiration :) just got accepted into engineering about a week ago and hope to go into chemical engineering
Congrats!
“i don’t know why there’s so many people taking apart light bulbs” sweet, innocent nile
This was awesome. You did a great job at castings; don’t be so hard on yourself.
Its okay that it wasn't perfect. You're a chemist. Not a craftsmen. We still love you
I told my old chemistry teacher about this and my old HS adopted it. It's been going for 3 years. Each year is different and the talented students get to show off their knowledge. Thanks for the idea, sorry for the late comment, but the video just popped up on my recommended again and I remembered that this was the catalyst behind it happening
I flinched super hard when you dropped the bulb
The best part about a radioactive tree is that it doesn't need lights to glow
These ampules would scare the sh*t outta me on a christmas tree. Like, I'd legit be watching them 24/7, sweating. But they sure do look cool.
Really cool project and really great video. Super wholesome :)
Great work! Happy New Year.
You too!
You have suffered much for our sake. We thank you for this.
My favourite Christmas video
you can thank tweekers for all of those lightbulb dismantling wiki's
21:02 That's gonna be fun at the airport
dude, the chemistree looks so sweet
That turned out really nice.
THIS IS COMMITMENT, I'm so amazed with all of this
I'm amazed by how much time you put into these videos and its transparency. I've been watching for a year now and I've enjoyed almost every video. Keep it up :D Btw, do you live in China? why are the 3D shapes coming form China? Love the hard work
this is wonderful !!! I loved your tree.
