Dave Royer used my studio around the year 2000 to test the ribbon mics. R.A.D. Sound Studio Fullerton CA. Dave Royer had 2 versions of his Tube mics in the 90's Mojave. The (Bomb) has Chinese capsules, I had 2 of these. The (Monster) has a Neuman capsule, I couldn't afford to buy one at the time. I rented a Monster once. 2 Crown PZM mics on each side of a small plate make a great overhead stereo drum kit mic setup. Locate over the drummer's head pointing down at the kick drum. The small plate means the mics only pickup the highs. For my own vocals, I've always liked the Audio Technica 260XL more the an SM58.
Very entertaining episode! Thanks Manny!! And I have to say - I'm 52 as we speak - I've seen a million shows - everything from the Monkeys, the Ramones, Roy Orbison, Yes, Roger Waters, Iron Maiden, Steely Dan, Reverend Horton Heat, Sound Garden, to working for Motorhead and Sabbath for a short time, & so on, & I have to say; top three live shows ever, 1 of the 5 times I saw Zappa Plays Zappa, a Neil Young show on the This Notes For You tour, and David Gilmour live at Massey Hall. Dweezil - I'm a big fan. Love your dedication to your art
Fascinating Manny! Loved the video & I’m always impressed with Dweezil’s easy going & unpretentious manner, especially when he’s such a legend! Thank you both.
Thanks for sharing and he’s so genuine it’s shocking in this day and age of huge egos! He’s a real dude living the dream. Thanks for having us Warren PLAP styles🎉
Very cool episode and Manny is a great host! The mic featured at 10:00 held by Dweezil is an EV 644 (not 642) shotgun microphone, the mounted on the boom shown moments later is the EV 642 Cardline shotgun microphone.
Oh man-good to see you Dweezil and Manny! Dweezil-your guitar solo on Charlene on the album "you Can't do that on Stage anymore Vol 3" is my personal favorite and best guitar solo ever recorded on anything ever! :-) Thanks for reminding me Manny! You Rawk! 🙂
I hadda take a moment to grab a towel to wipe the drool from my chin at right around 10 minutes in...didnt stop it tho thanks for this and the upcoming episodes...cant wait!!
That was awesome Manny. Think am gonna need a bib to clean all the dribbling after seeing all those mic's. Great job, thanks very much and a big thanks to the PLAP team
Save for IG, this is the first time I've seen Myburgh featured. Some serious lineage in the development team so I'm sure they are extraordinary. Love Manny's fuxd up tones (in a good way!) for that intro. Dude is 100% original.
Great video Manny! You show some really nice Mics. I even have one of the mics shown here, well almost, it's a Electro/Voice 644, looks just like the E/V642 Dweezil has. This video makes me want to show my collection of mics. Now if I can just get my Wife to do the camera work.
I’ve tried a few and been down the gear rabbit hole a little bit. But when people I meet ask my advice these days I bore them and I say- get an SM57! 😂 a real one not a cheap copy. It’s not sexy and people like the big shiny condensers with the cool shockmount and the pop filter- I get it I’ve got one! (SE2200a) But my logic now goes like a) An SM57 sounds pretty damn good on anything- I actually like it on acoustic guitar over my Rode M3. b) Living in London we are all recording in less than ideal rooms with neighbours arguing, buses going past and planes overhead- condensers pick up too much of the background noise and the bad room sound. c) It’s inexpensive and robust enough to just leave set up and ready to go at all times.
I feel ya as my own studio shakes w a train passing and no Lie 500 bands playing all around my rehearsal style studio. 57s are in my tool box and still after 25 years making records used every session. No body is fancy here lol but not that my ears can hear differences in mics I love these options now . I reach for mics before plugins and that’s just my own style. We embrace all styles here @producelikeapro
@@mannysmiclocker the options are great these days. I got a pair of matched small condensers for forty quid- they aren’t great, but they were forty quid! Lol I haven’t watched the video yet- Manny and Mics and Zappa needs proper concentration! 👍🏻
It is but I do feel mics are my tool box as well. Skill meets tools of the trade to achieve your own greatness. I feel it’s more a individual taste that equals exciting recording. Thanks for tuning in 🎉
If a center OH their perfect but I use in front of drums and it captures a nice picture more drums then cymbals. So I say it can do both and all on placement.

Hi Manny,
Great show. you failed to identify the blue colored microphone.
I’d it’s the Myburgh M1 I didn’t in intro dialog and the video had graphics mentioning. Hope that was correct and regardless thanks for checking out ❤
What song was that at the beginning?
It's definitely a Manny Nieto song! Perhaps his band Chavas Ravine
Yup - it's Chavas Ravine - Audio Trafficking. Manny's Band
