A VERY fine production! I especially liked Frosch . . . the actor was a marvel!
Gruberova war eine herrliche Komödiantische Begabung konnte sie im belcantofach nie ausspielen .. aber ihre Adele oder Rosina waren/sind hinreißend ❤

Even after so many years, one remains grateful for the genial charm, poignant insights and compassion for the human condition that lies at the heart of this work: and this production. A “luxury” cast, melded into a nimble ensemble, with thanks to Otto Schenk, and his ability to mobilize the resources of the Wiener Staatsoper, to such good effect.

Thank you for the upload. It brings many memories as Edita Gruberova was a fellow Czecho-Slovak. The Staatsoper is such a beautiful theater. I hope I can get there next year.
i was with 24 ... swan lake ... i was a student and wanted a standing place ... a student from vienna got the last ticket ... then she came back and gave me her ticket with the words ... you are from switzerland i have seen him (nureyev) ... you can have my ticket ... i am 78 now ... this is one of my most wonderful souvenirs ...

they were probably 30 years old even then. That's a very old production, besides it's the Staatsoper, not some outhouse in the Idaho backwoods.

@@chgem.2658 Munich is not Staatsoper. It's different city, country and director. Some productions have historically been shared between Vienna and Munich, but a lot depends on artistic director and general management. Sometimes new productions work and sometimes they flop--same everywhere. Staatsoper retains sets and costumes and uses them over decades and many things on that set are used in other productions as well as costumes. They wee still using this set/production when I left Vienna in '92. They might still be using it now. At that time, same cast often played Munich/Vienna at same time, but since Fledermaus is NYE --the same production can't be in two houses at same time. Volksoper Fledermaus is also beautiful production, but at that time completely independent of the Staatsoper. A few lead soloists went between the two because Staatsoper is not normally comedy/musical or operetta. Staatsoper Boheme was from 1960.. Zeferrelli. When you present 40+operas a year, you use same production for decades and new productions happen 2-5x year.

Diese Aufnahme sollten junge Sänger studieren. Heute kriegt das in dieser Gesamtheit keine Bühne mehr zusammen. Lohner als Frosch ist unerreicht.

I don't believe that John Paul II is mentioned in the cast list, nor any other Pope (e.g. Alexander!?). Now we know what you prefer: wonderful! THIS performance is one of the great ones.
