As retired concertmaster I played this piece of art many many times, as far as 100+ times.. Operetta as an artform is unfortunately hardly and seldom seen anymore nowadays and that breaks my heart. Seeing this on UA-cam is the best medicine. Thanks to the composer and the gorgeous soloists. Many thanks for posting this. My compliments! ❤️💋🌹💐🌷🙏🥳🤩😍 tingeltangel Person, hahahaha!
Vielen danke!! Pedro Miguel, Mar del Plata, Argentine
I fell in love with Anna Moffo in 1970 when I saw her in concert and she took my breath. Not just with her wonderful musical tones but her beauty as well. Thanks for sharing this. It adds another memory of Anna Moffo.
Splendid Moffo, with her sensuous, velvety and luscious voice and magnificant stage presence! That was the fun of grand operetta and Viennese music. Who cares about the feathers?
Dear NewHerur ! Thank you so much for this beautiful film !! I love it !! I had the opportunity to attend to a performance in Budapest, in May 2001, at the Thalia-Theatre. I was great. Vielen Dank! Gott sei Dank, dass ich Deutsch kann.

I really enjoyed this video so much; all the singing was superb! I am an Anna Moffo fan, so seeing her performance, here, was a real treat. Thank you so much for uploading and sharing! Oh, and Best Regards from the USA!
WHAT A WONDERFUL FIND!! i saw bits of it abroad, could not find it then anywhere till came across it here by chance, how can i thank you?? it is just BRILLIANT!!thank you a million!
I saw Moffo in concert and recordings don't do her justice. They leave out so much. I was amazed how big the voice was, and wonderfully flexible up to well above high C. Marvelous interpretations in a variety of music.
BytomGirl, I am sorry having to say that I know of no other version than the original German. Even the corresponding sheet music shows no translation. Of course, The Csardas (sometimes spelled slightly differently) is a Hungarian Dance and ......fürstin, freely translated, means Princess. Hopefully this helps to convey just a little bit of the idea behind this Operetta, one of Emmerich Kalman's greatest musical achievements and world renown.
Thank you Leo, these simple translations are easy for me, I know well what the titles mean, just would like to understand the plot... I used to spell Csardas as Czardasz in one of my old languages. I guess I just have to learn German too :) I am an Operetta fan since childhood and listened to the music from most of them, some not well known. I will try to look for the plots. I know already many of them and listen to them just for the music. Just would be nice to see the translations. On Art Channel here I saw the clip from this operetta with the translation but I can't find the entire operetta. Oh well :)
BytomGirl, as I mentioned before, you see Csardas spelled in different ways. The way the Operetta opens spells it as above. On the other hand, the man who ought to know spells it in his sheet music with accent marks, i.e., Csárdás, and I would not be surprised that in its original language it would be spelled your way, in fact I have seen it with a "z".Now, as far as the plot is concerned, at the risk of telling you something you already know, the story of this Operetta revolves around the age-old theme, a man of "Nobility" falls in love with a Commoner, a dancer, to the serious objections of his family. On the other hand he is willing to sacrifice everything - inheritance, etc., - for the love of his life. In the end it turns out that the LADY who protested the loudest is recognized by someone as someone who was not a LADY in an earlier past. At that point, her protests cease and, as the Saying goes, the rest is history.
Thank you so much for the story... It will be easier to figure it out. Watching all these operetta movies will probably help me to learn German the way I learned English and previous language as I have lived in 4 countries (2 English speaking). So it will be a challenge but these kind of linguistic challenges sharpen the brain :) The beginning of the plot reminds of an Opera I have seen about 3 times, Halka... but it ends badly with the suicide of the poor girl while the rich lover has to marry a girl of high standing.
Can't stand when people say German is an ugly language. It's so singable as here: consonant - vowel-consonant-vowel... Nothing to complain about. The whole thing is hilarious, both content of dialogues and songs. I couldn't find any of the songs' lyrics online that correspond to the ones here... Please respond if you know where to look... PS My German is fine.
I had not seen the Martha Egerth version ,but the Marika Rokk version. This version is based more on the original play.Although it was a bit stagey it was good.Old Karl Schonbock makes an appearance in this 70's style version in the deep throat Era.Ha,Ha, Ha,Ha,
Operettas must be loved in their original orchestrations. Kalman knew how to treat an orchestra the best possible way. Here, even if the 'show' is great and the singers are big names, the musical result is not at all for my pleasure.
In soviet union was presented in longest version in hungarian with songs in english, all with russian subtitles. In this german version cut song of Edvin's mother "Hajmasi Piter..." In once tv presentation of this film on central soviet TV was cut cancan from 1:28;37 to end of dance, i was shoking...
Respect from Hungary
Moffo was a true star and Kollo and the other singers are great but the designers could have taken more care over the hairstyles, wigs and men's moustaches. Everyone looks screamingly 1971. Elisabeth K left an apt comment two years ago below: furchtbar, diese federbuschen auf den köpfen... Kálmán's operettas are immortal.
It is a problem with most of the films made in 70's. The famous "Тhe Godfather", for example, it took me a while to comprehend that it actually takes place in 40's and 50's and not in 70's.
In this version they have cut out one of the essential parts of the film, which is called "Hajmási Péter". In that part, Edwin's stepmother confesses that she was also a prima donna at the Orpheum and sums up the lesson of the whole story. It´s pitty, it belongs there. here it is: ua-cam.com/video/_-Cp0N__kIY/v-deo.html
It's wonderful, to be sure, but there's an even better, complete recording on You Tube: Cardaskiralyno Csardas Queen, parts 1 & 2 from the Szeged Open Air Festival of 2005. It's in Hungarian, so you won't get the puns & word plays, & the costumes are inconsistent, but it's a fantastic production, full of the energy & humour that I remember from seeing it as a child in Budapest! (Also, the story is more complete than the Moffo version.)
The majority of the actors and the director are Hungarian. There is also a Hungarian version, "Unfortunately, someone on the Hungarian TV has downloaded, so the quality of the picture is very poor", the Hungarian language performance is much better for music
If I see well ,this version doesn't include a scene near the ending where Marie -Luise(Idk the german name of Edwin's mother)and her ex lovers- I mean the men who loved her when she wasn't married -sing together.Maybe cause the actors couldn't sing in german -they weren't professional singers-and it would be more boring for the german viewers too
If only everyone could do it all... LOL Just like Sutherland or Baltsa... they sang fine but couldn't move either... Frankly, singing quality here isn't that superb although the whole thing is funny

Correction: A Hungarian Jew Imre Kalman who was forced to flee his country to save his live from both Hungarians and Germans
I just realised, why this beautiful opera, not in original Hungarian language or in English? Please can you make a video in original? Thank you.
Good fun!
If I see well ,this version doesn't include a scene near the ending where Marie -Luise(Idk the german name of Edwin's mother)and her ex lovers- I mean the men who loved her when she wasn't married -sing together.Maybe cause the actors couldn't sing in german -they weren't professional singers-and it would be more boring for the german viewers too
Yes, this wonderful aria is missing! What a shame!
A legnagyobb operett!!Die beste operett des welt!!
Grande Anna Moffo, esalta l'operetta
Of course, if you want the REAL THING - you can always go to the Marzipan of Operettas and bank on there Great Anna Moffo!!!
Sorry, was not Silva Varescu (Romanian), was VERECZKY SZILVIA and Hungarian.

Question: Is that Anna Moffo's speaking voice in the dialogue sections - or was her dialogue dubbed (a la Stefano Dionisi in "Gloomy Sunday")?
Cordiali saluti.
Me encanta

WUNDERBAR!
Is that Rene Kollo - noted Heldentenor -- dancing Ganz Ohne weiber???????
She has a great voice but she absolutely cant move. And chardash after all is a dance.
If only everyone could do it all... LOL Just like Sutherland or Baltsa... they sang fine but couldn't move either... Frankly, singing quality here isn't that superb although the whole thing is funny
Leonardo and Einstein weren`t sure top performers in Pas De Deux as well,
