The Nels Cline Singers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Nels Cline, the preposterously skillful and adaptable guitarist's guitarist, is known mostly for his nasty solos with Wilco. But he's also part of the underground rock and free-jazz scenes, in which he's made challenging and expressive music with countless musicians, including those in The Nels Cline Singers. Cline's short set in the NPR Music offices serves as a rare and intimate master class from a thoughtful musician.
    Set List:
    "You Noticed"
    "B86 (Inkblot Nebula)"
    "Thoughts on Caetano"
    "Blues, Too"

That drummer! Scott Amendola is one of my favorites. Just saw him play at Open Mind Records in Oakland. Always so good.

Had *almost* as much fun watching this as the drummer did playing it. Great set!

I was fortunate to see them live a handful of times, before Nels joined Wilco. The Singers are amazing, especially when Amendola has his full drum kit.

A beautiful little set, which really makes me want to see them live. Really admirable.

I liked B86 - yes some is "out there" to some people but always something to learn and consider in experiencing sound. Nels Cline is fantastic in whatever he does.

He says "Featuring Uka at the end. See you at the end." she turns around all awkward and looks at Nels. At the end of the song, she just makes a few cool ambient noises. Then after the song, she slowly lowers herself below the table. And is never seen again.

      Yuka Honda.

Yuka Honda, of Cibo Matto fame, and Nels Cline's wife. It's a very small room, tightly arranged. (You could even see someone working at their computer literally on stage with them at 6:00). Ducking underneath was the probably the only way Yuka could exit the stage for the song she didn't play on.

safe to say that by far most people who listen to this or similar kinds of music are musicians of some sort, they have at least tried to play and instrument. Its like if you havent studied or attempted to make music, you probably wont appreciate this.

It's not the tempo that discourages me, it's the randomness. I can dig a little odd-ball wackiness from left field every now & again, but I like SOME sort of recognizable rhythm or melody that I can lock in & tap my foot to. But, fair enough - this is not my cup of tea, but I guess whatever pops your boat, or floats your cork! To those who do enjoy, enjoy! ;^)

this seems to be either a love it or hate it group. I personally am more on the hate side. Go ahead and put me in your box, but I prefer songs that have some more distinct form. the first two minutes were confusing and far too ambiguous for my taste. maybe I just don't understand, but it's also possible that I just don't care.
