  • I had a misfire which quickly became bad. It turned out to be a failed HT lead. Here's how to find it, and replace ignition leads if necessary. The engine shown is a Duratec HE in a Ford Mondeo Mk3, but the principle is universal.
    More about the replacements and why OEM: • Quick tip: Best choice...
    High tension leads (cables) are a service item really and should be replaced with a new (not used) set. Try Amazon ~

    Wish I'd watched this last night. Just spent this morning buying plugs, coil pack and then HT leads, in that order, in three trips to Euro Car parts for my misfiring MK 2 pre-facelift Focus. Problem was HT leads. I'll be getting my multimeter out later to find out which bugger was the culprit. Apart from that one, I'll now have a complete set of spares at least, lol.

    Hi Craig! I’ve enjoyed all your videos so far as your Mondeo is the same as mine with a very high mileage of about 300,000 & I’ve owned it now almost 10 years & bought it second hand. All I have had to do to the engine is replace the water pump. Which was a real sod of a thing to remove because it had been glued in from new by the looks of it!
    The ignition gave me a bit of strife a year or two back, & a mechanic said it was the coil pack so purchased a brand new one! In all the time that I have owned the car I have never replaced the spark plugs because I have been told that I shouldn’t need to! The car has never missed a beat except for the coil pack! ( touch wood!) It’s got tonnes of get up & go! Even though I have driven from the middle of the north island to the top & back again numerous times!
    I am surprised that you have had to renew or look at lots of various things with your car’s engine that I haven’t or won’t ever consider touching! I have however just recently added some Power Up to the engine & transmission to help with the lubrications of the engine & automatic transmission smoothness etc. I probably unlike you have a heavy right foot, so when I drive somewhere in my Mondeo it’s not going slow, but I always keep to the speed limit!
    Oh I recently replaced the plastic rocker cover for an alloy one because the gasket seals leaked oil into the spark plug wells as the four seals became hard & brittle & stopped sealing & no amount of tightening would over come it! You cannot over tighten plastic covers without breaking something!
    Cheers for all your videos as they all have been most helpful especially changing the power steering pump having two o’rings that have to be of the green type!
    As for the catalyst in the exhaust system have your muffler man knock it all out and the engine goes just as good if not better without it not in there!!
    Keep your videos coming as they are all full of good helpful knowledge!

    Hi Craig, first off thank you for all of your videos on UA-cam. We have exactly the same Mondeo and because of your guides I've managed to replace my swirl flaps (twice!), replace my clutch, carry out various service tasks and diagnose many problems. I'm posting now to ask for some advice. About six months ago I started to notice the juddering you've referred to in this video. When I checked my plugs, only one of them (number 3) had an obvios issue. The metal connector at the plug end of the HT lead had corroded and stuck itself to the plug end when I pulled the lead out. I cleaned it up a bit, and then ordered a new plug and just the specific HT lead. I've replaced them both today and initially it seemed to work, but as the day went on, the juddering returned. Do you think it could be a simple case of disconnecting the battery overnight and thus resetting the computer? Or, could I have missed something? I'll take all the leads out again tomorrow and follow your guide to make sure the connections are clean and sound, but if that doesn't work, any ideas? Respect, Ian

    Hi Craig, I have owned my 2001 2ltr Auto Mondeo for 20 years now and maintained it myself. Recently if I'm in drive and stationary then hit the accelerator in quick succession so say pulling out of a junction the engine hesitates then goes but if I slow down the reaction time from brake pedal to accelerator then all is fine. The resistance on the HT leads are all within tolerance and I have replaced the spark plugs. Like you I have a obd scanner that provides live data but no faults shown so I was wondering if the throttle position sensor could be the cause!

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Possible yes, easy to test with a volt meter, I have a video on that with same engine. No faults ok but you will need to get into the weeds of the air/fuel data if the TPS checks out. Check other basics, air & fuel.

    Hi Craig
    I would have a question about my car if you could help me out.
    I was just wondering. MOT has been done to my care which is a Ford fiesta, before the MOT the noise level was high in the car, its consumption was also high and it's felt like it doesn't have much power in it. after running a test on its computer to find any problems with the car, everything was fine. oil has been changed, oil filter and also Air filter was changed and they reset the on board computer. The engine ran very nicely without effort, very quietly, very quickly and its fuel consumption was perfect no noise whatsoever. The yellow engine error light came on when we were traveling, the noise level increased, the consumption also increased, the performance decreased. now I don't know what to do... any suggestions please

    Help please! We just bought a Ford Mondeo Mk3 Automatic second hand, and there's a hose loose. It's the one on the gearbox, bellow the air intake and below the battery. Right next to the sticker with PTAN 1S7P-BA. We don't know where should be plugged the other end. Any guidance would be much appreciated!

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  4 роки тому

      There is a vent hose down there that doesn't connect to anything, it's just a breather. Search images of that to compare and confirm.

    I've changed HT leads, spark plugs. cleaned out tmap sensor and air filter, throttle body. and my car hesitates at low revs at start of acceleration (sometimes) ... is it coil pack, air leak?? (mondeo mk3)

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  4 роки тому

      Well you need to know what the hesitation is first, check what you can with a scan tool. Misfires can be because of fuel or air as well as ignition.

      Depends on your engine. The gearbox attached to these Duratec HEs is the CD4E and the filter is not serviceable. See ua-cam.com/video/TRW3utBVxV8/v-deo.html

    My 1.8L petrol mondeo has a rough and inconsistent idle.
    Have replaced the sparkplugs, ignition coil, ht-leads, fuel filther and cleaned the air intake parts.
    Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  4 роки тому +1

      If it's not spark then could still be fuel injectors, if it is idling over-revs then more likely a vacuum leak downstream of the throttle body.

    • @Strikerz0r
      @Strikerz0r 4 роки тому

      @@CraigsDIY It's very strange, it works buttery smooths some times. Often, when I first start the engine up it works smooth, but after the engine is warmed up, it starts to run badly and the engine vibrates. No strange distinquishable noises that I could detect. The idle revs also change depending on its "mood", some times it idles at about 750rpm, but sometimes it goes as high as 1200.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  4 роки тому +1

      Maybe a vacuum leak that is opening up with heat.

    • @Strikerz0r
      @Strikerz0r 4 роки тому

      @@CraigsDIY Could not find any leaks or any other apparent faults. The most likely problem may lie in the inlet manifold, but that is quite a job to open and finding parts is challening. It''s very strange, because the engine works smootly on startup, but gradually gets worse after it gets warm.
