Ford Fiesta Engine Misfire & Loss of Power - Diagnosing & Replacing ignition coil pack.

- In this video we have a look at Tyler's car that has developed a problem. Keen to ensure my staff get to work i give him a hand to try and diagnose the problem and see if we can fix it. It takes us just over an hour to find the problem - drive to get the new part and fit it. The car was only running on 3 cylinders so we show hot to work out which cylinder was not working and then identify the spark plug ignition coil pack as the problem. This car is fitted with the Duratec petrol engine.
Great when your boss helps you repair your car! I always had to do it in my tea/lunch break!
Same, can use the garage but in my own time, I don't mind that though
anyone remember the old days when distributor was manual?with breaker points? LoL those days are long gone great video very useful
This man sounds like an awesome tutor!
Glad you think so!
Thankyou so so much i saved so much money doing this myself, also the top cover just pulls off easy with a good tug from the back of it
hukhukhukhuk....hukhukhuk...sound, really enjoyed . The way of explanation amazing, thank you for your valuable information....
Fantastic explanation, cheers
This happened to mine. Changed the coil but the problem was still there. Pulled out the spark plug leads and the tops of the spark plugs were covered in water. Had to soak up the water then change the plugs and it worked. My first time working on a car :)
Well done ! you have a new coil now anyway so she should drive a dream now !
I did same problem a wek ago I changed plugs and sucked water from plugs still same problem now ????
@@ibrarahmed75 i put new spark plug leads in too. Not sure if that helped.
Some really nice tips also well explained, keep them up
You legends. My Maurice runs like a dream! 🚙
Thanks. Same faults. This video helped me.
Nice video. Nicely presented. 🇬🇧⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🇬🇧
cracking video lads...this might be the solution to my fiestas low buzz noise and slight cough on firing up
They are not expensive so could be worth a change !
I've got a 2l fiesta and have a misfire issue in cylinder 3, hopefully changing leads, coilpack and spark plugs fixes it
Great video, quick question, would there always be an engine light on the dash when the coil packs up? My 05 fiesta is misfiring at 1000 rpm and apparently I should change my coil pack but there's no indication on the dash and no codes on the reader?
I had to replace my coil pack on my mk6 fiesta style it was misfiring on 3 cylinders too I cleaned the spark plugs and replaced the coil pack I thought the spark plugs were going out but since replacing the coil pack the car ran much better and no more misfiring issues the mpg improved significantly aswell
Nice video
Proper old skool mechanics there. Great job.
Not really ... unburnt fuel overheats the Cat.
Not wrong - i was worried about that.... but he had driven for a while with low power so a few more seconds was not going to hurt ! Will check out how it does on the MOT tester..
Great video mines diesal any way I should diagnosis it filter ? Pump ?
Thank you
The best way to check is to take off or to pull the spark plug cables from the coil one by one and you can hear or see when it sparks, that my own experience. In the way that they are pulling is’t a little risky to have an electric shock.
Mumma didnt raise no wimp.....
My st150 has an issue where if I apply full throttle in 2nd gear upwards it just completely bogs out for few seconds then fires back up for a moment then does it again?? Any ideas cause I'm stumped
This a great video, particularly the coil pack replacement, who knew that was so easy. Just replaced my Fiestas spark plugs after a loss of power under load and did the trick. Noticed when I was changing them the HT Leads had orange rust on them, presume I must have a leak from the coolant or 'welsh' plugs. Car ran fine since except the engine light came on yday signally a P0300 error which I think is a general misfire. It happened after a massive downpour. Wonder if water is getting it from the top of the spark plugs.
So after not being too fused about the misfiring I decided to try and fix it. I assumed the spark plugs were working ok, so changed the air filter, cleaned the throttle body and MAP sensor, still nothing fixed. Took it into the garage today and they put some second hand spark plugs in and fitted a new coil pack and it's fixed. Now I'm feeling like a bit of a plank that it was obviously a new spark plug that was faulty when I fitted it. Coil pack was changed two years ago so although I have a new one it probably wasn't that. I couldn't be bothered with being electrocuted trying to test the spark plugs again. Oh well.
Same problem on my ford escape 2003 with a 2.0 engine. One ignition #1, has no spark. I was suspecting the high-tension wire, but I tested with a multi-meter and it seems good. So, my suspect would be the ignition coil.
And thanks for sharing this. Good job !
I was just wondering. MOT has been done to my care which is a Ford fiesta, before the MOT the noise level was high in the car, its consumption was also high and it's felt like it doesn't have much power in it. after running a test on its computer to find any problems with the car, everything was fine. oil has been changed, oil filter and also Air filter was changed and they reset the on board computer. The engine ran very nicely without effort, very quietly, very quickly and its fuel consumption was perfect no noise whatsoever. The yellow engine error light came on when we were traveling, the noise level increased, the consumption also increased, the performance decreased again .now I don't know what to do... any suggestions please
My fiesta has just had the coul pack go at this time too..
These engines are pretty much bullet proof, however, they do sometimes suffer misfires. There are two very small core plugs at the top of the head where the plugs are. These rust through letting coolant into the recess where the plugs sit. Genuine Ford ones are around £5 for the pair. Another weakness are the leads and coil pack. Neither are expensive and easy to replace..
Ford cars are so underestimated...
Um.. I had a pulley seize up and broke, it jumped timing and shredded the motor at 106,000 miles. The timing belt still looked perfect, just the one pulley froze up and left me on the interstate
To sum up. My next car will be a Honda or a Toyota
The crankshaft position sensor also causes misfires, erratic revs/idling, juddering when accelerating and stalling randomly.
I had a pain of a misfire on my very old Focus. Changed the HT leads it went away , only to return a month later. Sprayed the HT leads and coil , it went away again only to return last month with a vengence , including engine warning light. Popped a new coil in yesterday and its running beautifully , but the engine warning light is still on. I have reset it , but it came back on 1 months ago and now wont reset
Get a fault code reader and see what it thinks is the issue - when the engine light is on it can help as you can fault code read it.
@@L663 that was my intention
@@L663 just drove it , engine light is now off , cleared itself
I had flashing check engine light(sometimes solid light) misfire under load. Turned out that the car didn't like Motorcraft spark plugs. Put Autolite plugs in...solved problem...so far.
My fiesta is misfiring on cylinder 4 and 1 I changed the spark plugs and it’s still misfiring on cylinder 1 and got the throaty exhaust, also struggles to get to speed up bank. I’ve bought more leads to replace the 4 hopefully everything should be good instead of having to buy a new coil pack
I think it could be the coil pack... see how you get on !
Great video. The question I have is, does this fix engine hesitation?
If the car is running on 3 then of course having all 4 working will help !
But hesitation could be caused by other factors - follow the video and see if one of the cylinders has no effect when disconnecting the HT leads.
Greetings from South Africa. Great video! I can assume this is a 1.6l by the sound of the exhaust when listening from the back of the car. I think the stock exhausts on the 1.6l models sound a lot better from a daily driving point of view because they don't sound as throaty and sporty like what you would typically get on a 1.25l and 1.4l model.
My personal favourite is the 1.25... its a sweet engine
man ur so obsessed withe these stoch exhausts
Did the spark plugs have any built up carbon? My car was doing this. The mechanic put new plugs in and ignition coils but it's still doing the same thing after a day. He then thinks it needs a new engine!
You need to compression test your engine - takes 2 minutes - but if it was OK for one day i think the engine is OK
It could be the spark plug leads
Hello, my engine cover is screwed on from underneath and I can’t pop it off at all, have u got any tips? Thanks.
It would be odd of it was screwed up from below - pretty sure you just need to give it a sharp pull upwards !
I thought i had this problem, but turned out the throttle body needed a clean, think the intake was dirty & sticking.
You need to keep your body clean !
Hi, I’m looking to buy a 2011 Fiesta on Autotrader, it mentions there is an issue with the engine not firing correctly. Would your gut instinct say it is the same issue as this video?
I should add, it runs to 40mph then starts misfire
Its hard to say but if it runs OK to 40 and idles ok I would think that it cannot be anything too serious..
Hi I'm having the very same problem though sometimes the car drives smoothly and sometimes it just doesn't want to have it.
My question is do you remove the fuel pump relay during testing or is it safe to do it with it on
It is safe i think but there may be some unburn fuel enter the catalytic converter which is not idea - so removing the realy may be a good idea !
Thanks
Hi. Can some one help me with my Ford fiesta 2002. 1.4 tdci. The issue i am having is that when it rains, and i drive thrue a poddle of water my engine shuts Down and all electric also. Some times it take 5minutes to 60 minutes until it starts up again. Thanks if someone had time to read this and have something usefull to tell.
ooo not good ! for all your electrics to shut down it must be something close to the battery or the fuse box
Also check near the engine ECU if you can find that.
@ shanty where in sa are you based can help you.
Sir my problem of my ford fiesta when I drive 10 meters stop
1 ) is it chained to a post with a 10M chain ?
2) do you have fuel ?
3) does it idle for 10 minutes without driving - or is the problem only when you drive ?
Yes we have a fuel but it will run and take a risk after 20mins it's run after a minute again stop
Mostly sir run and stop I ask other said transmission but I don't no
@@kuyanolivlog8742 it is crank sensor
Did this my ignition coil and lead still work perfectly. But when i remove leave 1 and two the car is fighting For life and lead 3 and 4 the car loose a bit of power but still acts like the video
Interesting so clearly 1 and 2 are good - 3 and 4 are the problem - I think a new coil would be work a try.
I've got mk6 fiesta 2005... Just stalls when driving / idling.. No error code showing, cleaned throttle body, replaced tps sensor, repositioned relays, cleaned pump filter, new oil filter, cleaned sensor on front wheel arm... Still stalls.. Pls advice
Try spark plugs and leads / coil ?
@@L663 I've replaced coil...I'll try ht leads, I'll advice
Crankshaft position sensor is faulty. Get it changed and report back
Did you find the stalling issue?
@@Pluckems yes, none of the suggested things... By stroke I bumped into guy with same issues had soenp thousands ar Ford, no solution..its ABS rear brake cables. Whoo 😴
my fiesta feels like im driving with the handbrake on , the car has no go in it , a friend said it could be the coil pack, does this sound likely , ive got new spark plugs new oil new brake pads so it can't be any of those things, thanks
Hard to diagnose - if it is still smooth but just powerless it could be..
Blocked air filter
Is the throttle cable going down fully ?
Fuel filter ?
Coil pack will make the car run rough
@@L663 I'll have a think and see, thanks for replying
@@L663 I've put a few fuel filter liquids through the petrol
@@L663 air filters are new
I swear to god one day I'll burn down my fiesta out of rage. Just changed the ignition coil set and the old ones had water with oil inside them where they go over the plugs. Still have a cylinder 2 misfire
Interesting - whats next - compression test ?
@@L663 Gonna bring it to a mechanic, I gave up on it, there's also a vacuum hose which is cracked
@@L663 Want a good laugh? compression test was in parameters, but because 1 sparkplug had worn out electrode all 4 sparkplugs were swimming in oil. Changed the sparkplugs runs like new lol
hello ! ive got a 1.6 16v 100hp ford focus and does not have power ...will not go past 150-kph its sluggish as fk ...can you please advise what to look for ? i think it might be a clogget cath :( it allso dies when i come to a stop or when i push the clutch in the RPm drop under 500 rpm and some times the car stalls :( help please
Your fiesta is clearly not performing as the pure racing machine it was designed to be... so lets look at the basics
Your engine needs
1) Fuel
2) Air
3) Spark
So lets take each in turn
1) Fuel - make sure you have good fuel in the tank - maybe change the fuel filter as this may be limiting flow at high power
2) Air - make sure the air filter is clean - as a test take the air filter out !
3) Spark - you could treat you car to new spark plugs and a new coil pack... as a trear
Now with that all done head down the road to the nearest KFC and turn the music up loud !
You are then living the dream....
Mine is coil pack i got 1.4 checked all plugs number 4 closest to coil pack not firing from pack so gone out got a new pack for it going to change it week end it drives but slowing down or going faster got that pop pop pop and every so often a back fire but all other plugs are sparking i put my tongue 👅 in to find if it had spark nothing from number 4 coil to engine lol
Dont recomend using your tongue !
My ford figo misfires and it goes therrrrr therrrrrr I’m a woman with no man this stresses me so much😭😭😭. Greeting from South Africa but I’m 100% sure my mechanic will sort the car out
Did you get it fixed?
@@PaulWisdom engine needs to be worked on
Can't hear it going what....? ;-)
Couldn't this shock.you
My car, when it need power it smuther if the engine didn't get enough aor
HOW the fuck did you start that without holding in the clutch…
Skill ?
I don’t even know any more lol
If we go to a garage. That'll be $500 please...$490 labor...
Guys never again put up a ford on ur channel .its garbage
I've always found them reliable and easy / cheap to repair if they do fail. The engines are solid. That said, they replace models quickly so you can often find yourself driving an old looking perfectly good car. I also think they trend set the look of new cars, the new focus looks great IMO.
But the Smart car was OK... my first car was a Ford.... 1953 Ford Anglia ( sit up and beg ford pop )
Had fiesta 2006 brand new at time for 14 years this year granted only done 34k miles but had hardly any issues lovely nippy car
Ford are pretty solid, good cheap and relible for young people with who need a good first car. they never really have majot problems just perishables tend to go after 15 years...
me too ive always found fiesta good small cars !
