I think Spearhead from Space is a great gateway for anyone with classic Who. Jon Pertwee is magnetic and charismatic, the blu ray upgrade makes the colour and image pop, and people who watch the new era and are starting classic, there's a lot of factors to recognise (autons, post regeneration eccentric moments, the doctor being a very active protagonist in the story, etc).
The only downside of course being that classic Who doesn't look as high quality cinematic as Spearhead, but I think it's just enough to draw you to one classic doctor in structure and character, which is a foot in the door in terms of a hook/interest in the classic era or just something classic Who.

Hey lads think I stumbled upon this ep last week on another channel ? Bit surprised that Empress of Mars wasn't in Capaldi's top 3, its gotta be one of my Top N.W eps, & I know lots of folk won't agree but I like (Time and the Rani) awwww it shouldn't be last in Sylvester's stories . Just heard today that all the classic series will be on iPlayer from the 1st of November that is class , Hope the viewing numbers for the classic eps overtake the new series ,then they might start making the show a bit more like them 🙂. Great Ep lads I rewatched the whole thing again just for Matthew's reactions to 12 & 13s Lists 🤣🤣🤣 Which are spot on , Next Time fella's 👍

Tom Baker was my Doctor. I was 4 or 5 when I was watching him on his original run. It took me nearly 40 years to even bother with the first three doctors. Glad I did eventually.

I absolutely love the seeds of doom. Off the top of my head I think I’d definitely put it higher than deadly assassin and probably even city of death. But it’s purely nostalgia and I just remember being totally engrossed and enjoying the monster. Baker and Pertwee both probably have an equal number of absolute bangers.

My first experience with Doctor Who was "Spearhead From Space", "The Time Warrior", and "Pyramids of Mars", My Dad had them on VHS. When i saw trailers for "Rose", I assumed it was a remake of Spearhead, because i had so little context for the VHSs that I had watched as a kid.
My first New Who story was Dalek. I had to wait for reruns to see the previous episodes. Because of that, I am now obsessed with the Daleks.
I think if you want to get into Classic Who after watching New Who, start with the main trio of enemies; Daleks, Cybermen, and The Master. I think most of my Classic Who watching started with finding Dalek stories on Daily Motion. I would also look out for Companion introductions and departures, as well as regeneration and multi-Doctor stories to flesh things out. Only try a full watch through if you've been with the series for a while.

Oh I think the animated Macra Terror made people reevaluate that story. Personally think it’s great.

One 10/10 story from each Doctor (avoiding all recurring villain stories):
    Edge of Destruction
    The Macra Terror
    Spearhead from Space
    City of Death
    Caves of Androzani
    Vengeance on Varos
    Curse of Fenric
    Empty Child/Doctor Dances
    Waters of Mars
    The Girl Who Waited
    Oxygen
    Demons of the Punjab

My first proper story was Carnival of Monsters and I loved it to bits. Better without too much lore I think. However I agree Remembrance is great for modern audiences.

I've always been a bit baffled by Tomb of the Cybermen's reputation as an all-time classic. I agree with you that it has some stunning model work and incredible atmosphere, with one of the all-time great sequences as the Cybermen thaw and break out of their tombs and a chilling cliffhanger to Episode 2... plus some great performances from the regulars and that beautiful, heartfelt scene between the Doctor & Victoria.
But it also features some incredible directorial lapses (the Episode 1 cliffhanger is an absolute mess, the wire work is atrocious and the less said about the empty Cyber Controller suit flying across the studio the better...), some of the most teeth-grindingly awful guest performances the show has ever seen and a wafer-thin plot which relies heavily on the Doctor acting like a complete tool.

My introduction to Doctor Who was Parting of the Ways, as I started catching up on random episodes s1 and 2 of the revival (my first Tennant story was Tooth and Claw) , I became aware of the classic series with a set of promo DVDs for the first five Doctors featuring:
1- Day of Armageddon (Dalek Masterplan ep2)
    Part one of
    2- The Faceless Ones
    3- Spearhead from Space
    4- Robots of Death
    5- Earthshock
S3 onwards I saw every episode live so 11-13 was their debut stories on initial airing, The rest being the full stories on DVD:
    6- Timelash
    7- Remembrance of the Daleks
    8- TV Movie/ Shada animation

All I have to say is Blink is overrated and bollox. Good monster but the story makes absolutely no sense and is terribly written.
And Whittaker is terrible and should never have been given the role

For me growing up in the wilderness too, I started with the Cushing films then going down to my local library and watch a selection of classic episodes on vhs. As I said before, The Five Doctors was my first story I ever watched so i think The Five Doctors is a good way to be introduced to the show. Also just a bit of fun. Most of my friends are New Who fans, and they watch some classic episodes with me for the first time. I like to keep a diary so they can write down their thoughts on the story we watched.

Having watched Daleks' Master Plan all the way through now - in episodic order with The Myth Makers and the Massacre - I can say that I've fully recovered from Bloated-BBC-Drama-itis and am enjoying The Edge of Destruction with Hartnell's soggy doo-rag.

I love McCoy's era, but season 24 is a stinker. Dragonfire is okay, I guess, but some of the earlier stories just don't work. Paradise Towers, for example, goes for the J.G. Ballard-style idea (Highrise) but it's just derivative and has way too many hammy performances - at times it's like a pantomime and I can't help but cringe.

It’s weird to me that Doctor Who fans will get together and refer to so many episodes as “dogshit”.
Overall you give the impression that you dislike more stories than you like. In which case maybe, just maybe, you’ve been wasting your life?

You're kind of priming people to not enjoy old Doctor Who. A lot of modern shows are full of shonky effects and dodgy acting. And most Netflix dramas are slower than any classic Who six-parter.
