Hi Dave, great video (again) thank you for posting, I have said this before but you are my inspiration for my new layout (rock carving etc) so please keep them coming. You are a true crafsman. I appreciate the effort you put into your videos. Cheers Gary.
These rock formations really are superb Dave. It's hard to believe that simple, pink foam can look 𝒔𝒐 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 like rock. I built a small N scale layout many years ago and used actual chunks of real rock, taken from the lineside, at the location I was modelling. That rock didn't look as realistic as yours.😁
Hi. Although I too saw the resemblance to Vasquez rocks, towards the end, especially after the lighter shades were added, the whole structure turned into a very ancient petrified log. I like it a lot. I’m picking up a lot of great tips and techniques. Thanks. I look forward to seeing your next update. See ya.
I know you probably already have plans, but that area of rock that sticks over the tracks would be a perfect perch for a big haunted Victorian, complete with glowing lights and sound effects. Keep it up, looking great.
Great work so far Dave! Really enjoying watching this layout come together and I'm particularly excited to see Skull Butte and those haunted caverns come to life!
Another great tutorial. What a transformation of that foam! I particularly appreciate the details and concepts behind the painting process. Cheers from Wisconsin.
Hi Dave Shock horror!! you have gone modern image on us LOL That looks great, where is Cerberus going to be hiding to keep the living away and the dead where they belong. If Cerberus is a bit too scary, perhaps Hagrid will lend you Fluffy. After all three headed dog's are a bit hard to come by even when you know people in the trade Could you please do a piece on the small deserted mine . This project is coming together nicely it already has the look. regards John
If you're looking for a good lightweight replacement for sculptamold, I have come to swear by lightweight spackle. The stuff is amazing and incredibly light.
this is a really lovely tutorial, thank you! I think I have to say that the rock shapes look their best at about 12:50 or thereabouts, before you use the wire brush. I think the wire brush gouged out the big lovely shapes you had going and resulted in details that were too noisy. the heatgun toned some of it down, but at that point the great character of the rock was lost in my opinion there's a really lovely striation technique that I think I've only ever seen on Eric's Hobby Workshop where he cuts many closer lines together with the knife and then uses the blunt side of the box-cutter to break and chip away foam in a rather procedural-like erosion process. you might like it! ua-cam.com/video/xzOKAGl_vrk/v-deo.html

Your work may not fit in at a Railroad Prototype Modelers meet, but it is a lot of fun.
Fitting in has never been my goal.

Excellent. I think you broke new ground with that carving technique. Inspiring as ever.

Thank you for the step-by-step tutorials. I'm finding them both entertaining and informative.

WOW! Wonderful rock work (as usual Instructor Meeks. The master of rocks.😉). Thank you so much for sharing this work.
It’s amazing what you can do with such a small area
Inspiring work as usual Dave. I hope to see the Thunder Mesa and Gruesome Gulch someday in person.
I see you have a nice little rail truck. Can’t wait to see what happens to that in the future

Incredible video! Great tips and techniques, thanks for sharing!
Fabulous work, Dave
Magnificent!
Those rocks turned out amazing. I kinda regret picking the area around the Illinois river now. Very few rocky ledges.

Looks like your lighter accent color is a pretty close match for your cap. Happy accident, or cunning production design?
this is a really lovely tutorial, thank you!

Love your rocks. But you keep saying “grey”, and I keep seeing olive green and blue. Is it me, your camera/lighting?
It's a greenish gray. But it might be your monitor/screen.
@@ThunderMesaStudio It looks like a very cool (technical term, not affectation) variant of No See 'um Grey....
What is the name of that train-truck thing on the thumb nail?
It’s called a rail truck. The prototype ran on the Rio Grande Southern in 1913. I have a video coming on how I customized it.

What kind of super glue do you use with a long nozzle?
That's cyanoacrylate
