Figuring out when to begin the toe decreases:
It takes 23 (26, 28) rows to decrease the number of stitches down to (16 sts) the point at which you graft the toe closed. So knowing that, you can count your rows and measure to see exactly when you need to begin the toe decreases, based on the length of your foot minus that amount.
Note: The Beginning of Round is at the beginning of the back half of the stitches, or the side of the sock where the heel flap begins.
JANA'S ROUNDED TOE (knitted from the cuff down)
Row 1: *k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before the end either the sole stitches of the top or the foot stitches, depending upon where your beginning of the round is. k2tog, k1. * Repeat on the other side of your sock.
    Row 2 & 3 - Knit a plain round
Repeat rows 1-3 until you have decreases the total number of stitches by 12.
Row 4 *Repeat row 1, the decrease round
    Row 5 Knit a row.*
Repeat rows 4 and 5, alternating between a decrease round and a plain round until you have half the original number of cast on stitches left. For example, If you began with 64 (72, 80) sts, you should repeat these two rounds until you have 32 (36, 40) sts left, or 16 (18, 20) stitches on each needle (if you’re using magic loop or 2 circulars.)
Half the number of original stitches.
Now knit the decrease row (row 1) every round until you have 16 stitches remaining, or 8 stitches on each needle. Graft these stitches using the Kitchener method show here:
    • Kitchener Stitch witho...
ROW BY ROW INSTRUCTIONS: (If you find an error, please let me know in the comments below)
Row 1 is a Decreasing Round: *Knit to 3 sts before the end of this half of your sock (either the instep of top of foot section), k2tog, k1. Turn sock over, k1, ssk. Knit across needle(s) until 3 sts remain, k2tog, k1. Turn sock over, k1, ssk * 60(68,76) sts remain
    Row 2-3: knit
Row 4: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 56(64,72) sts left
    Row 5-6: knit
Row 7: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 52(60,68) sts left
    Row 8: knit
Row 9: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 48(56,64) sts left
    Row 10: knit
Row 11: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 44(52,60) sts left
    Row 12: knit
Row 13: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 40(48,56) sts left
    Row 14: knit
Row 15: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 36(44,52) sts left
Row 16: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 32(40,48) sts left
Row 17: For small size, skip this row and go to Row 18 decreasing now, every row.
    For M/L sizes Knit.
Row 18: For S size, repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 28 sts left
For M size, skip this round and go on to Row 19. For L size, Knit.
Row 19: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 24(36,44) sts remain
Row 20: For S/M sizes, skip this row and go to Row 21. For L size, Knit.
Row 21: repeat Row 1 for a decreasing round. 20(32,40) sts remain

Row 23: Kitchener grafting for small size

Thankyou for your amazing description of Kitchener stitch...I always use it because it makes an exceptional finish, but learned it from another and always in terror and never get a rythm going...your description is soooo good and simple and non scary and I began to understand what was going on and get a good rythm (my pattern leaves me with 28 stitches over two needles) thankyou

Thank you. I come back to this video every time I have to Kitchener stitch. It's so clear (uh, even though it's, um, blurry. Unclear but clear, I guess. ;-) ) I just had to graft 120 stitches, and I could hear your voice with every one: "Knit off, purl on; purl off, knit on; knit off..."

I just wanted to say... thank you so much for this series! I actually followed the Hermione’s sock pattern that I saw you’ve previously done! You were so helpful for all of those bits in the pattern that were new to me as someone doing her first pair of socks! You are so clear with your explanations and were a total lifesaver with the heel turn and Kitchener stitch cast off. Thank you!!!

Wowzers, I've completed 1 sock & it looks & fits perfectly. When my partner gave me sock wool as a Christmas present I looked with horror & trepidation. But you came to my rescue, what an absolute dream your videos are Jana, I'm sure I wouldn't have made it to the end without your guidance & easy to follow instructions. I'm loving Kitchener for it's neat finish, here's to matching sock... Keep up the great tutorials & thanks again

A friend just introduced me to knitting again after a 40 year break . I grew up in Switzerland and in high school we were allowed to knit in all our lessons! Now living in Scotland I followed your excellent instructions to remind myself of sock knitting - thanks for making it look so easy and for the detailed instructions!

Thank you SO much for this step-by-step tutorial. I am just learning to make socks and trying different methods. So my current pair are very odd with different heal styles, soles and toes. But, they do both fit, so I will wear them, but will use my favourite parts from the different styles for my next, and hopefully matching, pair. Thanks Jana! 🥂💐💖

I love, love, love your videos and I’ve been able to knit a sick fur the first time ever!!! I do have one question and that is do you subtract any from the measurement of your foot length to allow for the stretch of the sick? Or does that ease become less after you wash the socks the first time?

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  4 роки тому +4

I personally don't subtract for length, but you could if you want them to fit tighter in length. 5-10%
