“Untouchable”: Women Testify to Harvey Weinstein’s Decades of Sexual Abuse in Powerful New Film

  • democracynow.org - As we broadcast from the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, we look at a new film that is forcing the movie industry to look closely at itself. It’s about the rise and fall of a movie titan who once used Sundance as a hunting ground: movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of rape, sexual assault or misconduct by more than 75 women. The film “Untouchable” takes on Harvey Weinstein’s decades of predatory behavior and the system that allowed it to happen, through the stories of survivors of his abuse, from his time as a young music promoter in Buffalo in the 1970s all the way until a series of investigations toppled Weinstein in 2017. The stories of accusers, from Gwyneth Paltrow to Salma Hayek to Angelina Jolie, rocked Hollywood, sparking the Me Too movement. More than a year after this public reckoning, Weinstein now faces five charges that could land him in prison for life, including rape and predatory sexual assault. Weinstein has just hired the former lawyers of one of his most public accusers, actor Rose McGowan, who says Weinstein raped her here at Sundance in 1997. His trial is expected to begin in May. Just two years after Harvey Weinstein joined the Women’s March in Park City, “Untouchable” premiered here on Friday. We sat down with the film’s director, Ursula Macfarlane, the day after the premiere.

I got 'date raped' by a fellow dental student back in the 70s and felt so embarrassed by it that I could barely look at him ever again. Why didn't I say/do anything at the time they ask? Think of the repercussions for ALL of those concerned. Would I have to leave school and how could I afford a lawsuit? Was I partly to 'blame' because I actually liked the guy enough to accept a date with him? I'm afraid there are just too many reasons why people stay silent when it can affect their whole life/career. 🌹

@Kevin Gonzales I 'liked' him .. that made it more difficult . you don't want to scratch and fight and cause a scene. I protested of course, but he was a wrestler so had me pinned to the ground with his legs and held my wrists behind my back with one hand while working his 'magic' with the other. It was over before I knew what happened. Makes me sad that you should have to 'defend' yourself from some men. Thanks for the advice though.💜

@@007nadineL You kind of touched on it .. we feel partially to blame, we're embarrassed, ashamed that he would treat us with such disrespect. I dunno, when we're young we don't have the courage in many cases to admit we may have put ourselves into a position for this to happen. We rationalize it that men have urges and some just can't control them.. alas. Life's a crap game .. we do our best with what we have to work with I guess. 💖

But, like you said we were young and WE 👏SHOULDNT 👏HAVE 👏TO 👏DEFEND 👏OURSELVES 👏. I’m choosing to give my younger, bright-eyed self a lot of grace. I know she would be proud of how much more aggressively and confidently I could defend myself now. 💅💁‍♀️

@@purrehype I love your attitude .. but honestly, we both know that young girls of any generation allow guys to get away with far more than they should just because they want to be 'liked' by them. Why do you suppose men 'prefer' younger girls? Because their fathers and uncles told them that all they had to do was tell the girls that they were pretty and they'd melt right into their arms. Ah well, like Maya said .. when we knew better, we did better. 💞💞

Look at the bastard standing there with his mouth hanging open in court. He revolts me, he is revolting. More than anything he is the poster child for abuse of power. So many women have suffered this kind of thing. I have suffered this kind of thing. We must not rest until this way of being is changed. Forever. What Hope didn't understand is that a crime committed in Buffalo should have been reported and prosecuted in New York City, which at that time was *not* in Weinstein's pocket.

This sexual predatory behavior exists not only in the film and music industries, but in the military, and maybe in other corporate sectors. The business culture seems to allow inappropriate behavior to continue when employees witness such and remain silent. In secrecy is where the corrupt power is then allowed to continue, at a rate that seems unstoppable. Predators with money sense the vulnerability of a person who needs to work to live. Predators prey upon the weak to take advantage of them without regard for the young one's well-being. I am glad to see this interview bc it speaks of countless others who have been in similar 'trapped" situations fearful for their safety, scared into shame and guilt, feeling as though no one will believe what they would say. It is a helpless, hopeless circumstance to be bullied, raped, and left in a state of confusion. Women who come forward are brave in permitting transparency to shine through the opaque, smoky mirrors. It's time to clean up the mess. Let's keep Cosby in jail. I'll be following the HW trial in May. ☮️

I would like to see some sort of change happen like a police organization for women to go when somebody in power is doing this because they have the ability to hire all these very powerful attorneys that block the truth coming out; but it shouldn't be like that- they should be able to go to the authorities and stop it. WTH. How does this fly well with the bar? to represent a direct legal adversary of your former client (even if you represented her on other cases, you might still have privileged information or at least the trust in the attorney profession and bar could be damaged by even the slightest impression of such an incredbily severe conflict of interest).

Derailed is the word. While I'm pretty bummed about the state of race relations in the US, I am heartened to see the progress for all women & men's relations with regard to what happens in the workplace. When these older actresses were in their teens, newspaper help wanted ads were still segregated in the US: Help Wanted Men Help Wanted Women
This progress to improve relations between men and women came at a great personal cost to a lot of women. Although they were targeted as victims, they ended up the heroes of the movement. Thank You, Ladies! and Ronan Farrow!

Ironically, Hollyweird has produced many movies about women with broken dreams being kicked to the curb by the industry. Even as far back as the 30s and 40s. I know someone will probably take a shot at me but c'mon, how naive can these ladies be? We are adults here and face it, this is a nasty business! Who doesn't know this? The music business is ugly, too. Isn't there any shared responsibility? 🤔

They manipulated him by making him believe that they liked him, by sending him for years hundreds of affectionate loving emails, texts, messages, audios where they praise him, invite him on dates, ask favours, gifts, money, invitations to exclusive Hollywood parties from him. Actual victims dont do that. Gold diggers do. These women were in for personal gain. They are not victims. They are opportunists and its sad that you are too blind to see it. Obviously you didnt follow the actual trial because you are blinded by the media trial. I was assaulted.
