  • democracynow.org - In her first television interview, we speak with a woman who helped topple Harvey Weinstein and expose his rampant sexual abuse but has remained largely behind the scenes until now. Lauren O’Connor was a literary scout at the Weinstein Company who worked closely with Weinstein. In 2015, she penned an internal memo about her boss that would later become famous. In it, she wrote, “I am a 28 year old woman trying to make a living and a career. Harvey Weinstein is a 64 year old, world famous man and this is his company. The balance of power is me: 0, Harvey Weinstein: 10.” This memo was later leaked and would eventually become the bedrock of the 2017 New York Times investigation that first exposed Weinstein’s decades of abuse. Lauren O’Connor tells her own story for the first time in “Untouchable,” a damning documentary about Weinstein’s abuse of power through the eyes of the women he targeted, that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday.

She mentioned that scenario to demonstrate how he backhandedly targeted young women. Using plausible, legitimate reasons for using a network of young women in his employment to complete small segments of his evil scheme so not a single person would know his ultimate goal and evil intentions. She was told a very plausible guise for getting that young flight attendant’s number. She had no idea that he’d do anything but hire her for a future flight for being good at her job.

Can you imagine the courage it took for this woman to do what she did? She could have just as easily walked away... told a few people in private.... tried to help Harvey's victims as individuals while protecting her job... or done nothing.
Instead, she torched her career, and her life, so that other women would be heard and other women would be safe. *She was already fairly safe.* She took this burden on solely in order to do the right thing.

Once you go up against huge wealth and power it becomes murky and complex. They have the money and lawyers to destroy you even though they've done wrong. You have to lawyer up - debt which will take you forever to climb out of - and your lawyers talk to their lawyers and the inevitable conclusion is the wealthy wrongdoer pays you and you sign an NDA. To fight his lawyers with your inexperienced, affordable lawyers is completely untenable. Eventually, it all comes down to money. Money is power. It took many, many women with the same story, and well-known wealthy, powerful women in their own right, to eventually bring this monster down. It's sad that no organisation is helping her financially. She deserves more.

    • @ksc743
      @ksc743 4 роки тому +1

@Suvo More it's not even a case of 'taking the money.' There is so much power and wealth involved that you're not even given the choice. Imagine trying to prove your allegations. Did you record and/or videotape all your interactions with him. Did you physically see women being abused and would they corroborate your narrative. By the time you got all that together you'd be millions of dollars in debt to your lawyers. Your family and friends would be dragged through it as well. It's a classic case of the abuse of power and criminals shouldn't even be allowed to have the option of hiding behind NDA's. The law should be changed.

The amazing thing is that she did. She could have resigned without ever saying anything but she spoke up and now finds herself in a position where people - like you, judge her without ever having met her. I had an abusive boss in my 20's but he wasn't famous and certainly nowhere near as sexually abusive as Weinstein but he was disgusting. I resigned and got the hell out of there. To be the first person to lodge a formal complaint about someone as powerfully abusive as Weinstein in the environment they were in takes guts not many people have.

LEGIT SAM 6IX While I agree that many men have wildly warped sexual perspectives and often senselessly project them on others... You do not need to hold such bitterness toward all men. I was attacked when I was 17 years old by a very large male family friend, who I (and my whole family) knew and trusted deeply. I fought very hard physically. It was premeditated. He had me come over to his house for a “surprise party”. All of the cars were parked down the street so the “surprise wouldn’t be ruined”. I entered the house and everyone was “hiding upstairs”.... Luckily, he did not end up raping me. He actually just stopped what he was trying to do and started sobbing and begging for forgiveness. I still can’t believe that ever happened. You never think it will happen to you... you just hear stories... Him crying and apologizing did NOT make him attacking me okay. It DID make me re think my relationships with EVERYONE and to this day, perhaps I am a bit more paranoid than I would have been otherwise... but for that I thank him. He is far away from my family and I now, and will be forever. I am SAFER now, and so are others. I have also been married now for about two and a half years to the love of my life (an amazing man) who I have been with for about eight years. If a man ever tried attacking me again to the point where I fear for my life/grave bodily harm, I will implore my second amendment right. There are lots of evil men *and* women in this world. The best we can do, is to it join in on the evil and/or let the evil force negative change in us towards others... because then, evil wins. Anyway, sorry for the rant. All the best! 💕 😇

And thank you, Amy Goodman, for continuing to bring these courageous women into these on-camera dialogues, in order to keep the focus on this critical issue of the imbalance of power. This intelligent conversation really helps to show how complex and deeply-embedded this societal pathology truly is. And, it will take serious, ongoing attention to help dislodge some of these 'norms' of male dominance and abuse. It exists on every level of every society around the world, because they are all still patriarchies. We're beginning to finally pull the curtain back and expose the ugliness, and insidiousness of these deep-rooted beliefs of entitlement for the male gender. So interesting that this woman starting "hiding" her evident beauty around Weinstein and wasn't fully conscious of why she was doing it. I think this is what happens to most of us. The left side of the brain really wants the job, the dream job, the connection with power. The right side of the brain knows and feels the danger and takes action. This happened to me at Time Inc. in my relationships with some high-up executives. watching her near tears as she retells weeping in a parking lot with a burner phone worrying about telling her parents is super telling: the shame (unmerited), the anxiety, the financial toll (therapy, travel, legal expenses). It's terrible. Harvey Weinstein should be paying these women's costs, may he rot in jail forever. Bravo Lauren O'Connor. Millions of women think about you, support you, will help you if you set up a Go Fund Me. You're such a bright, lovely, eloquent woman. You are doing all the right things and you will be okay.

Yes, the cost for courage is high. Personally, financially...She is probably feeling guilty for not doing something sooner, since her gut feeling was telling her something wasn't right. She might thought of him as a womaniser but wasn't imagining this until her coworker came crying...Happens in lots of work enviroments, maybe not in such way, but in other shapes of mobbing and abuse. In cases like this people who see the doing are too terrified to say or do anything. It's a second hand trauma for them as well. She did it, because this has to change! What a courageus woman!

I hope the women who have been abused by Weinstein find justice and some sort of solace after being violated by this repulsive, repugnant, vile, pock-marked, blob. O'Connor should do a Go-Fund-Me. or sue Weinstein for punitive damages. Lauren...you start your own company with relentless determination and ROCK IT! Do it ethically. START YOUR OWN COMPANY. You'll win that way.

That thing this woman describes as hiding: I’ve done that. It began in a work place where I worked lots of late nights and long hours and eventually learned that I felt unsafe. Stopped wearing makeup, stopped wearing heels, stopped wearing skirts (after I noticed one senior coworker 3 offices down from mine eye me, after he’d made some late night calls to my cell phone), stopped smiling or being friendly to everyone. I can’t pinpoint the specific events that triggered this, or how fast this all happened, but it’s a defensive instinct.

What I realize watching this woman talk about her experience(s) is that when you are recalling traumatic events you will blank and "forget" periodically because there are things you don't want to deal with, because they are too disturbing. So you might not come across as "smooth" in "remembering." Trauma causes fear and hesitation, in its reliving. She is actually very articulate. Amy Goodman is a legendary journalist. If they dare to fire me, I have a lot of witnesses, as well as cell phone audio.
If this is in a private location, I relax and act as if I'm compliant, and get them close enough to poke their damn eyes. I never understood why women are afraid to hurt their attacker.
I used to work in the hotel industry, and many chefs have an overblown ego just like Harvey did. Restaurant jobs were a dime a dozen so I was not afraid.
Also, both my father and stepfather were the reasons why I know how to defend myself. they were just like the rest of them. (My mother had great taste, huh?)
Besides, I have all sorts of weapons hidden in my purse and all over my car.

Magz Sara all people have rights to a lawyer. I’m sure his lawyers don’t care if they lose knowing the money they will get after it’s all over. They will laugh all the way to the bank. He’s a pig!

i have had many types of situations where I could not tell my boss anything. There is racism in the area where I live. I had people looking for something to gossip about me. very hateful work places... I have had times when I could tell the boss something but many times female bosses are truly ruthless and they can't even try to like you from the first, so you can never tell them anything.

Agree and the world is being dumbed down. People no longer read. Nor encouraged to read.

As someone who encountered rapist and sexual abusers who did awful things to me I'm so thankful women like this are coming forward and speaking up. It's so cathartic

Amy Goodman thank you. That was very good heartfelt interview with Lauren O'Connell. And Lauren O'Connell thank you for being strong and intelligent when going through this tragic moment. You are amazing and a hero to many in the same situation across the world. Stay strong

Well no, she shouldn't run for president. The abject failure of Trump's administration has shown us that just because a person impresses us, it requires experience to be a successful POTUS.

What a nice young woman! Her explanations are so concise and clear and perfectly "gets" the queasy feelings a young woman goes through when she perceives a boss or other person in authority over her makes subtle sexual advances one must learn how to handle just as subtlely in declining. I think every young woman working in large corporate firms have a story or two to tell.

I hope female & male relations will be restored to a tuneful beauty the way they can be, where no one feels exploited or objectified, where there's mutual appreciation and celebration, this beautiful magnetic dance that is fun and creative - not interactions
that bring harm and hurt and require therapy. Men like Harvey are monsters not humans.
