Nice to read you agree with my comment here! Yes, "Sugar Tax" really is a masterpiece of an album and each track on it also had the potential to be a single-release. I loved this one from the first time I had listened to it (in 1991). And still today I could almost even cry while listening to "All that glitters"... I've a got a lot of good memories which come to my mind while listening to OMD-tracks from that period... The videos from the "Sugar Tax-singles" were very great, too!

A very beautiful and fine song. In my eyes the "Sugar Tax-album" and all the "Sugar Tax" related singles and maxi-releases define the climax of OMD. I know that there are different opinions about that question, but I like the "Sugar-Tax-album" most of all. Somehow to compare with Depeche Mode's "Violator" and Pet Shop Boys' "Very". Milestones in synthie-pop history.

"Very" I'll grant you, though it's the only full Pet Shop Boys album worth owning for everything, even if 'Go West' is on it, but not "Violator". DM were never an effective albums act. No, I'd add all Kim Wilde's 80a albums, inlcuding all her non-album stuff, Dran Duran's "Notorious", "Rio", "Big Thing", debut and "So Red The Rose" albums, Sandra's "Mirrors", "Into A Secret Land" and "Close To Seven" as well as her 2012 "Stay In Touch" album, Natasha England's first 2 albums, and China Crisis's 2nd, 3rd and 4th album. I reckon Kirsty MacColl's "Real" would be up there too, if the bastard label had let her release it.
It's interesting you pick "Sugar Tax". Depite initially liking it, I found it sounded quite pedestrian compared to the 80s, and as Paul had gone, I felt traitorous. But it wasn't long before I worked out it's his best solo album and as good as some of their collaborations, if a little unimagainative in areas ('Was It Something I Said' being too 'Joan Of Arc' in the music dept, and the silly Apoll XI taking up space for one on the great B-sides of the era, but these B-sides actually make another album of non-album stuff stronger, especially as the follow-up albums struggled more. Critics were unimpressed, as the mystery and experimentation of the 80s gave way to a full-on 90s dance-vibe, and McCluskey admitted he got writer's block in the wake of Paul leaving. Having said that, this album is good, and it beats the living shit out of the very weak and disappointing "The Pacific Age", their worst result ever-and Paul was there for that. I blame not leaving enough time to follow up another, thinking they should do one every year. It had merely facets of the remains of the gold albums that had gone before.

    Thanks for this!
"Area" is my favourite OMD song. Even something more than favourite. It has got a magical power. When I listen to "Area", I feel, that the time stops, all bad things disappear and happines only is all around.
I use to listen to this song several times every day.

sometimes bands cut songs when they share the same sounds as another track on the album. Although this is a unique song, it does share some synthesizer patches with "Walk Tall". etc.

OMD needs to release another B sides album. Navigation didn't have this track on it. This is one song that I don't have in my collection and this song is great. Maybe their best B side. There are so many good B sides that weren't on Navigation like this song, "All She Wants Is Everything", "Satellite" and "Strange Sensations".

Great b-side love this but their are a lot of b-sides i like the one thing OMD do best is a great a-side then. Follow that up with some fab b-sides for us all to enjoy

The early B-sides are an acquired taste and barely songs. OMD at their most annoying. Their A-sides weren't always correct. Criminal for stuff like 'She's Leaving', 'Julia's Song', and other album cuts to stay away from A-side 45s, while things like 'We Love You' and 'Red F White L' are picked. Uusally they got it right, it's just they had more correct songs than could ever be released from one album, but then the best 80s people always did.

Great track. McCluskey should have nudged off "Big Town" or "Walk Tall" in favour of this, IMO.

Yes. Could state about 'Burning', 'All She Wants Is Everything' and the title track OF the album too, but actually it's fine as they both work on the album, the follow-up albums were in far more trouble, and the 90s non-album list NEEDS songs like this on it, as they get weaker along the decade.

Yes, I like to pretend it's about pollution, chemical warfare, or simply politics, but you could use it now for coronavirus. Many things back then by the best people REMAIN topical for all years.
