Unfortunately the neocolor IIs aren’t comparable to these gel crayons, they’re a much higher caliber art supply with a slightly different application for what I was Testing here today, but yes, it’s always awesome to grab things when they’re available open stock!

Thank You for doing this for your students it shows a terrific display of just how much you care for your students and their success! I have a set of King Art and am glad to know how they will perform with mixed media!
Thanks for reviewing Gelatos and the equivalent products. I picked up a Kings set at Tuesday’s store on clearance! Also have Faber so interesting about the packaging and branding. You’re great and I always enjoy the Awesome Art School lessons too.

Sorry for this long comment, but I love Gelatos… I used to do mostly paper crafting and now I moved on to primarily creating my own fine art. But I still love crafting (and coloring) but don’t have that much time to do it. Any hoo, When I used to do a lot of card making, I got into a building a decent set of Gelatos and have always loved them. I never did quite figure the difference in the tubes either except that if I bought some in a kit, with 3 or 4 colors, a stamp and maybe a little stencil-like brush, those tubes were the “plainer” looking ones, more like or exactly like? the ones packaged for kids. The ones for adults do seem to have maybe more product in them (don’t know, haven’t measured) and look a bit more lux with the clear tops and fancier looking tubes. Lightfastness: I too used to think that surely the “adult” Gelatos MUST be better than the kids and the reason they were more expensive was due to the more lightfast pigments being used, right? Now I don’t think so. I’ve done some more googling and reading and at least one reasonable source I came across said Gelatos were not lightfast and I think did some of her own testing. Info at some point on the FC website said Gelatos had “very good lightfastness” or something like that. Not sure if they still claim that. At any point, I think they’re some of the best or maybe THE best gel crayon on the market, but I’ve only tried a few other brands. 👍
Great info, Nancy! Thank you, I really appreciate hearing what different products have been like for others when they have tested them, it's super helpful!
Saw a video few years ago, think it was Frugal Crafter, where they compared the children’s vs adults gelatos, your right they both reacted exactly the same.
This was extremely informative and I enjoyed it. I've used Gelatos and the Maribou. I love the Gelaros, but I'm definitely going to look into your other top two options.
I absolutely agree with you. I have Jane Davenports Power & Aqua Pastels, as well as the Colorsticks! They're all the same! I do have several Faber Castell, flesh colored Gelato Sticks, I had bought a while ago on sale. I bought your MM Hamburger System Book a while ago👌 I guess I knew I was joining your workshop 🔮 I'm looking forward to it🤗💜💙
Yeah I bought those gel sticks because I couldn't afford the gelatos and I also thought that they looked the exact same and we're being advertised as kind of having the same capabilities. I don't feel like I get quite the same results but I have really enjoyed them and think they're worth the money!
Excellent video. You are such a great teacher. I have gelatos as per a previous video about them from you but think I’ll order those cheaper ones to try. Happy Thanksgiving!
I have gelatin and few of the other products, unforI always look for new products like you I have a collection if them now , I like the crayons stick for adults are the best ,a bit costly but excellent and they work with water very goid as well, they are LYRA and coming in 24 colours in a tin box., so I think I will be prepare for the class, thank you Karen for all this you doing for us, .. a lot of extra work and expense!!!❤
I love the Maribu art crayons but they are kinda expensive so I bought a huge pack of kids gel sticks for less than 20 bucks and the colors are really pretty and they are so creamy and work great with or without water. Next I wanna get a set of Lyra, I think that's what they are called, crayons like Caran d Ache
thank you for this, i really appreciate your testing these, and it really helps cement the knowledge that different products could actually be the same just different labels. ive long been having that same thought! I tested all the ones I have along side. Now I just need to learn how to seal so they dont spread :)
Thanks for the comparative demo, Karen. Very informative. I Googled the US Art Supply Gel Crayons, living in Australia I found the Website, started my order because the price was US$14.99, Yay! I feel hog tied because shipping is $73.00. Foiled again, by overseas shipping and handling costs. Gelatos are so hard to find in Australia, they are my favourite for blending too. Once again, thank you for the demo, great stuff!!
It's always that pesky shipping cost that gets us isn't it! I was going to buy a solitary white sharpie once but the shipping was $50+. For one! Yeah nah I'll pass on that thanks lol
Hi Karen - The difference between iridescent and metallics is Iridescent contain blue, gold, green, and purple pigments giving it a multi colored shimmer. Metallics give a one color pearlescent shimmer 😊
Question from a newbie here 😁 Could you blend, then a light coat of clear gesso, then seal? I have seen artists use clear gesso to illuminate reaction of dried inks on paper. I just wonder if a similar application would work with gel crayons/gelatos etc 🤔
wonderful review! Unfortunately, I cannot find any of these products in Italy. I did find a box of the US Art supply but it was triple the amount. It's just... I have no idea what I will do for the class... gonna have to go on my own hunt! Thank you!!
So when would you personally use the neocolors? Because I’ve been curious about them (because blending with acrylics can be tricky). Same for maribu? Also, I’d be super interested in a lightfast test because I personally like lightfast products. I did email kings art once and got a generic email they said they were lightfast.
Great question! I don’t actually mention or test neocolors here tho because they aren’t caparable to the gel crayons I’m using here and in this application. I’d consider them a much finer art product than all of these I’m testing in this video and extremely lightfast. The neocolor IIs are too water soluble for this application process and too hard to blend with your fingers. Neocolor Is are oil based so those won’t work either in the way that I need them to for my layering system. They are both amazing products tho of the highest quality, just not the properties I was researching in this little experiment! I hope that helps!
I'm having trouble smudging my gelatos. I guess they work best on a very smooth surface. Probably this is true for all. I like my USAS ones, better than my 1 distress crayon. I just got neo colors and from your demo it looks like maybe add a little water to blend. I think usability and versatility needs to be considered as well as price. I'm glad I don't have the problem obtaining like our overseas sisters. Wish we could find a way to help them and with shipping. Thanks for yet another crazy good demo! Your faces are so cute and funny 😻
@@loobyloo6254 I'm so sorry for you. I have bought a lot of supplies in the last 2 years. I hope they last me, I don't see it getting better for any of us. It seems that shortages are in all of our futures. I hope you can find what you need and improvise with what you have. 🙏
Interesting. So in wandering around on Amazon following one of your links, I came upon poster paint sticks. I have never heard of that before. .. but might be sending them to some grands now. Amazon is a dangerous place!
Hiya!!! I have a large collection of Gelatos including metallics….unfortunately they are all dried up and I can’t even rub them on mixed media or watercolour papers….Since the Gelatos are so expensive, I don’t know what to do with them!!!! Please pass on any tips on how I can rehydrate the Gelatos. Much appreciated. Thanks 😀🦋.
Sometime the brand are rebranded to sell them in different countries. Marabu and Faber Castell are german brands and they sell world wide. So there might be different productions an different packing? I get confused with them, too. Thank you for testing them...are these pens glossy or matt? Is this comparebele with pastel chalk? In most of these kind of pens the tip is to big in my opinion..never worked with them...
Some lightfast pigments are really expensive and there are not so lightfast hues that are very similar to the lightfast pigment. You can be pretty sure. That the kids products have the cheap stuff. Faber Castell has whole storage halls full of pigments and binders, and mix the batches as needed. Having the same containers saves money, when it comes to filling batches into the container and when ordering containers. If the lightfast pigment is cheap, they will use it for both, but may still substitute even cheaper filler in the kids products.
Maybe a tiny bit (there are UV sprays ) but ultimately no. But if you’re creating not to sell, it may not even matter. Just depends on the end goal of each project.
@@KarenCampbellArtist it just seems like a waste even if you aren’t selling a piece. Gifting it to someone or even just keeping it for yourself, only to have it fade? 💔
Great test Karen. I've seen so many on the market and have wondered. I want to like the Ranger products but they just don't live up to their hype. I've had problems with the Gelato iridescent and metallics completely wiping away when blending so maybe it's got something to do with what that medium is? Thanks for doing this for us all :)
Thank you for this, and yep I can relate after buying pricier Gelatos then finding some Michael's store brand "silky gel crayons" on clearance that yep, look and are exactly like the King Art, US Art Supply, Maribu, JD, etc, etc! They ended up being a great impulse buy, haha! They cannot beat some of the Gelato finishes or shades, though I must admit... but for basic shades, definitely (and Distress are overrated in general, mine dried out fast). See you in class!
Hi girl! Hope u get this message! I know u go for skin tones, but, could u check and let me know if the white from Marabu is better than the Kingart? I have the Kingart in my cart, but don't know if I need to buy the white from Marabu! Im always looking for an opaque white! Help, please! Im crossing my fingers u can help me before I make my purchase😊
I'm lucky that where I am in Canada that I can find local sources of FC Gelatos. I used to buy individual colors at the Michael's here. Don't know if I still can. Considering how expensive it can get to ship products to Canada, I'd rather buy them locally when I can. We don't have many of the other art supply store chains like in the States, and it is a good way to support the local art stores.
Yes, I love that you are supporting local businesses, May! I know they need all of the help and it's also a win when you can get things locally and see it first hand.
@@soulsearchmedia I'm in Calgary. Michael's has been a good place to find them. It's been awhile since I've bought them though. Will have to check on it.

Yes, Amazon is a rabbit's hole, but so great too! Thanks for watching, Kathleen!
Thanks 😀🦋.
Oh that really stinks! Let me think about this and I'll get back to you.
Can you tell me which mod podge is the right one .There a water-based matt regular matt sealer.Thank ayou !
I prefer the Matte but Glossy works too!
@KarenCampbellArtist There's different matte mod podge . Just don't know which matt mode podge uypu used.
Sorry I’m not understanding you! I always use matte mod Podge.
These are matte and not related to chalk pastels. They feel and behave like oil Pastels!!
Interesting points, thanks for sharing Silke!
If products are not lightfast, can a sealant protect it from fading?
Maybe a tiny bit (there are UV sprays ) but ultimately no. But if you’re creating not to sell, it may not even matter. Just depends on the end goal of each project.
@@KarenCampbellArtist it just seems like a waste even if you aren’t selling a piece. Gifting it to someone or even just keeping it for yourself, only to have it fade? 💔
@@ValleyMermaid yep! They are cheap tho! Which is why there is such a big market for them! Lightfast products come at a much higher price tag.
@@KarenCampbellArtist thank you SO MUCH for your shared knowledge and experience!!!
You're so welcome, Marianne!
You are so welcome! See you in class!
Wow! Thanks!! I'm surprised Distress Crayons aren't lightfast!
I know. None of the Distressed products are!! It’s such a bummer!
I feel sick about paying out for the high end ones....ughhhhhh.... thanx for the info!
Oh, I can absolutely relate! Glad I could help!
I like Gelatos way better than both of those actually, great question!
@@KarenCampbellArtist so the Gelatos are sold open stock? And if so, is their white opaque?
Their white is opaque! I’d search on Amazon - off the top of my head I’m not sure 🤷♀️
@@KarenCampbellArtist thank u!!!!
I know they need all of the help and it's also a win when you can get things locally and see it first hand.
where are you getting them? I haven't found them in my local shop but i have a few others I could check. I don't see them at Michaels either.
@@soulsearchmedia I'm in Calgary. Michael's has been a good place to find them. It's been awhile since I've bought them though. Will have to check on it.
@@mayloo2137 I am in Calgary too. Let me know which store and I will go check them out! I'd rather buy from local places.
@@soulsearchmedia two suggestions: Reid's on 17th Ave. Limited number of sets right now. Kensington Art Supplies near Deerfoot Meadows doesn't have the FC gelatos, but they have the FC soft gel crayons which are similar.
Thanks Karen. I have Jane's Marzipan Twists so sounds like I will be able to use those. Love Jane's products, and many others. ;) Love art supplies in general! :D
Art supplies are the best!!! Thanks for watching, Cassie!
I wish I had watched this video beforehand. I got the Shuttle Art gel crayons. Oh, well, I think it will be fine🤞🏼
It totally will be fine!!!
What does light fast really mean anywhy?
Lightfast means the pigment/color does not fade when exposed to light and UV rays (over time).
Argh, and I can't find *any* of them in the UK!! :(
Amazon.co.uk has them all!
@@KarenCampbellArtist At over twice the price they are in the US. :(
@@themshedcreative2560 I feel ya! I had to buy all 8 products just to be able to make this video!
So funny I bought all the Kings Art and have no idea how to use them! Lol
Hope this is helpful!
Is this a free event?
Nope! It's $15 if you sign up with the link up top otherwise it's $37. It's a whole week long event! With tons of prizes and lots of fun, I couldn't afford to fund it for free, I'm so sorry.
Fixative. Give things a chance to dry.
Thanks for sharing!
Anything by Jane Davenport, seems really cheap low quality,
And dry out or go useless very quickly( paints gel type sticks and markers, very bad, in my experience)…I wish an artist would be more careful with who they align their name with, I love her books, So, I actually believed that she cared enough to have trustworthy input into the whole process of Formulas durability and actual quality.
Her Products cost SO MUCH…
Never AGAIN!!!😡
Edited.to say, I love the smaller kids gel crayons and stick type product.
(On Amazon you can get a lot of different colors, not just basics!!!)
P.S. My order of your hands and (for me) my latest face book, just came today!… still saving so, I can get your whole list of books!… Love them all. But the Art Deco type ladies are next on my list!!!
Thank you for all your care, that you put in your videos!!❤️👍🤓
Thank you so much for your support of my books, Kathy!!! I hope that you absolutely love this one! And thanks for the feedback, it's always helpful to hear what products you are and aren't loving.
So much zooming in and out. Whew! Good review though!
Thanks for the feedback!
