Otto Hashmi is a recorder player and solo artist from London, forging a sound between popular and classical music on an instrument often maligned in both worlds. His upcoming EP 'Music for the End Times' explores the dystopian mood of our current society, taking equal influence from the sounds of London's techno clubs as well as recorder music of antiquity.
He is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, taking a masters in Advanced Instrumental Studies on Recorder. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Music based ensemble Londoninium Consort, who perform early music with influences from Folk and Contemporary music.
Upcoming performances:
18/4/2023 - Echoraum, Wien, AT
9/5/2023 - matinée with Londinium Consort at Brighton Festival, All Saints Hove, UK.
9/5/2023 - evening solo set supporting Shabaka Hutchings at Brighton Festival, All Saints Hove, UK.

Thank you for 10,000 views! As this reaches a wider audience I am going to stop monitoring comments, but thank you all for the wonderful feedback so far.
I realise unorthodox interpretation can be divisive, but I hope that by pushing into new grounds the potential for this underappreciated instrument can be expanded.
I don't think that anyone asks, "Why do you play piano?", "Why do you play guitar?", or "Why do you play trumpet?" My question is, "Why should playing recorder have to be defended?"
A good point - because there is such a widely held stigma, and because I am asked so frequently, I saw it as important to address in a way that would make sense to those who perhaps only see the instrument as suitable for beginners. I hope that by answering these questions and using the instrument in more bold and eclectic contexts it will improve its public perception in the long term.
"cuz suck my ass that's why"
When you play a recorder WELL it really does sound so beautiful. It has its own special sound. Especially a wooden one.
Can’t wait to hear more of your music. Thanks for the beautiful performance ❤️
You know kids don't want to play recorder, they always thought it was boring. But now if you learn how to play it correctly you will be surprised, I was, I only only realised wow its a beautiful instrumental thing.
That encourages me to play with more expression. Thank you !
That bow at the end! You know you nailed that! Beautiful interpretation! Love seeing fellow recorder players bringing honor to the instrument!
3:28 feels like im flying while listening to this part. Beautiful preformance.
Marvellous.
That was beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Excellent! Wonderful
I always played the recorder but all I had was plastic yamaha, hohner until at my age of 57, my wife, who is a real musician bought one made in Switzerland, Schaffhausen made of olive wood. What a difference! Maybe I will now even learn how to play it.
Yes, do it! It will make you happy❤
Great stuff! More please!
Unorthodox, bold and wonderful!
Thank you!
Maravilloso 👏🏼
BRILLIANT and sublime performance!
Bravo, Otto!!!
Awesome interpretation Otto, and great intro as well!!!
Bravo bravissimo🎵👏🎶
Beautiful performance
Brave of you to appropriate such an iconic piece. I think it works, also because you don't hesitate to put your very personal stamp upon the music. As a cello player (also) should.
Very intresting!!! Bravo!!
Super cool
Very impressive 😊
I love this😊 bro
Like your answers very much. More I like how you give way to your music after Bach. Greetz from Duisburg Germany!
This was nice
Good execution, personal, interesting, and imaginative. I noticed in the last long note that closes the piece, I think it's a low F, a little gurgle that makes me think of the "wolf tone" that reminds me of some of my recorders that have this little flaw in one note.👍👍
Thank you very much - yes I agree, I love the intrigue that those notes can have, almost like an extension of temperament having different effects on steps of a scale. Although I've since had it adjusted by the maker to fix this.
close! it's a low E on that last note :)
@@ottohashmi I don't want to contradict you but I seem to have read that the tuning fork of your voice flute is A=415Hz, with this tuning fork it is F but if the voice flute is A=440Hz, it is surely E.😊
@Giorgio Lamborghini no problem at all. But at 440 this would be Eb/D# ... at A=392 of course this would be an F. Perhaps it could be that I'm pushing somewhat, I think the note is definitely a good few hertz sharp of a tuning fork here as I was going full force😅
@@ottohashmi I apologize, you are absolutely right; my conviction was due to the fact that I had perceived it as F and not as E, being too sure of my ear.🤣
Merci beaucoup Jacques! Sadly it is very much the same in the UK, I am very lucky that my primary school teachers pushed me with the instrument and saw potential, leading me to the path I'm on today
its also easy to make a sound on a piano ... some time i take the recorder of my son and its fun to play . for me its sound good and its fun to play thats it !
Wow, thank you for the extremely high praise! I hope I get the opportunity to try that space one day - I have some concerts in Netherlands tbc so perhaps Belgium is not too far either
Beautiful! which recorder is this? soprano, alto, tenor?
it's a Voice Flute (in D at A=415, a minor 3rd below the Alto recorder) made by Jack Darach
I have much to learn
They only starting to use recordes in big orchestras. 🎉😊
Remind us again.....exactly what key & model of recorder was that ?
it is a voice flute (in D at 415 pitch) made by english maker Jack Darach
A lot of rizz at the end
What brand is that recorder?
it's made by Jack Darach, a recorder maker based in brighton uk
What wood?

Lovely. But it is tantalising to see the contrabass standing there unsounded. 😀
the video of me playing it at that same concert is now available on my channel
@@ottohashmi The only way your playing could be more insulting is if you used that contrabass to club a baby seal.
[17-2 21:53] Simon: Citaat Mirjam veurman:
"herrie maken heeft verschillende uitingsvormen: als je staat te schreeuwen, is dat iets anders als je een mooi lied staat te fluiten."
Not sure about the frasing here my guy... didnt seem really based in the music
bro this piece is meant for cello
recorder should play something for recorder
opinion
thanks for letting me know bro I'll delete the vid now
no dont delete ur vid
its very good playing but its just a suggestion

@@stackocat just kidding😅
in music you shouldnt anything ;)
you make me regret to abandon this instrument..
never too late to pick it up again!
@@ottohashmi Thank you for being so nice and encouraging!
Denner? Il tuo flauto mi sembra un Rotthenburg..
transposition is quite impressive, not to mention the execution, but ..... nah. still nowhere near the original cello version.
personally I prefer the nightcore remix
@@ottohashmiLove your reply.
