    So glad I watched this months ago or I never would've thought to try Kratky radishes. Grew them for my wife because she like radishes. And now I do too! Very mild taste. Some were so big, had a hard time getting them out of the 2" net pots. Grew them indoors with an LED grow light on full white, blue, red 12 hours/day and next to north facing window, no direct sunlight.

    Beginning Kratky person here. Noticed you grew from your seeds right in your setup and you added nutrients after sprouting. 1. Did you have any nutrients in there before they sprouted? If so what percentage (like 50% of what you would normally do?) 2. How did you keep algae out with all that ability for the light to get to the water (or did it not matter due to the short grow time). Thanks for the info! Ill be watching more of your videos!

    I read that radishes get bigger with less nutrients.
    If you add to much nutrients you'll only get it to flower.
    That's probably why these grew so big leaves.

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  6 років тому

    Hey, Jeb! I'm an organic gardener who loves to garden. I have been doing lots of research on organic hydroponic nutrients for the Kratky Method but Istill haven't found anything. If you could please do tell me an organic nutrients company for Kratky Method or make a video on it. I'm sure others would like it too!
    Your fan, Kavin

    • @truthspace5525
      @truthspace5525 7 років тому +7

      Kavin Jayaraman
      Organic growing is about soil health, with the idea of using natural methods to release salts to the plants. In hydroponics, there is no soil, so no efforts to maintain healthy soil are required. In hydro, you bypass the natural processes altogether, and make the salts available to the plants directly. In theory, you can match and surpass the nutrient supply of organics. No benefit to growing organically in hydroponics. You won't find strictly organic hydroponic farms. Even in aquaponics they add other non-organic things, often its the fish food.
      If you have the mantra of organics is the only way, stick with soil, and look into building a irrigation system that also allows for fertigation with organic fertilizer. That would be the best way to grow organically.

    • @Edigor100
      @Edigor100 7 років тому +1

      There are no organic nutrients, you can find the same nutrients in soil and as the other commenter said already: you're feeding the plant directly. So you can think of it in a way that you don't let your plant struggle to find nutrients in the soil, you give it to the plant directly.

    • @Marc83Aus
      @Marc83Aus 7 років тому

      Organic hydroponics? You should try Aquaponics, Continuous water flow over plants placed in a porous substrate like gravel. Organic liquid nutrients could theoretically be obtained by saving the leechate from a worm farm, adding sufficient lime (or eggshells, seashells etc) to neutralize the ph and also dissolving the finished castings into the water. However I don't know of anybody doing it so you'll need quite a bit of research to determine how to do it.

      I haven't grown any more indoors because with all the rock wool it isn't really cost effective. Also they grow so easy outdoors it isn't really necessary until the summer heat. I want to try it again without rock wool to see if I can get that to work. Thanks!

    • @zilym
      @zilym 7 років тому +1

      I started with rockwool, tried coco coir, and eventually settled upon aged wood chips. Rockwool costs too much and doesn't seal up the net pots well enough to prevent evaporation. Coco coir isn't free either, plus it attracts fungus gnats to no end. Wood chips are free and since they don't wick up water so ferociously, I can keep the fungus gnats from getting too excited about it because the top of my net pots stay nice and dry.

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  8 років тому

      Outdoors works great. Check out my broccoli video. I had some rain so i didn't have to water it once. If rain consistently overflows your tote you'll need to cover it during storms.
      The only real problems I think there are for Kratky is long term crops, so wheatgrass should work great. That's not to say it's the most cost effective method for every crop. I haven't grown wheatgrass, but I suspect if you look up some of the hydroponic fodder videos (people growing oat or barley sprouts for rabbits or goats) you might find a cheaper method.

      Jeb Gardener what size totes are you using? I've watched a number of videos and read endless comments trying to figure it out lol. Do you have a rule of thumb for how many plants per X sized tote? I realize it would depend on what you're growing and how fast they take up water/nutrients.
      I just started my first radishes and spinach because of your hilarious and awesome videos.

    wanna ask question, if we put a bigger air pump in a small bucket with single plant what would be the negative impact? If any?
    The pump which is designed for 5 gallons bucket to provide air thru air stone and we are feeding that much air to a single one litre jar. Will it create problems??

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  5 років тому

      as long as the roots don't get battered, it seems like it would be fine

      I put 5 gallon pump in half litre nutrient jar, plant was tomato, roots started brown and leaves started drooping down and older leaves petiole starts shrinking.

    Will this method will help my sciebtific research? I need to fine a helpful and cheap nutrients solution for the radish and the crop can be eaten by the people. Can someone help me to explain about this method? Thank you 😊 (this hydroponic process is new to me and we are going to do a 2 system of hydroponic process which is ebb&flow and drip system)
    Hopefully someone answer this and help me. Thank you in advance

      suspend them over water with a screen or fabric mesh. It must be flexible enough for the tap root to expand. good luck

    Question, what would be the optimal pH for the seedlings as they are growing? Doing kratky radishes for my senior project and they are becoming long and spindly for the most part, light is little too high, but still they’re not exactly growing as I planned, got it at 6 rn lol

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  6 років тому

      I don’t think ph matters much until you add nutrients. Focus on light
