Great video Khang - Nice to see the Salad Bowl growing. The Salad Bowl lettuce grows very rapidly, and I'd recommend havesting leaves as you need them rather than all at once - With my family, we've found that just two lettuce plants are enough to keep us going for months at a time as they grow new leaves as fast as we can use them. The salad bowl variety doesn't seem particularly interested in bolting or flowering, and is a great continuous cropper. Cheers!!
Thanks for sharing, Jim! I'm thinking on selling these as "kits". How much you would say people would accept pay for it? Should I calculate something as 6 times the price of the "supermarket lettuce"? 8 times? Any insights appreciated
Boss Let me offer this from my old Hydroponic grow If you drill the hole the right size you can cut your plugs into the hole and it will hold the plant in place all though its life cycle. I had mine in a greenhouse and bout a head of butternut lettuce at store ate it down to a few leaves then put it in a Kratky \style system like you made here. By only taking enough at a time I was able to harvest salads for 3 years from that one first lettuce. I did it on the super cheap and lazy. As I didnt have money for pot medium or even net pots I had to come up with the method above. I later used this same method on a much Larger scale and at my high point I had 1500 Plants Growing in a 10'x40'x19' G.H. with no pumps to fail. Word got back to our local college about it and I had the teacher bringing their students to tour my set up. We even grow radishes with my softer holding medium and no cups allowed them to expand in the space so they weren't restricted. Just some money saving ideas that have worked for me.
It can be a bit difficult to see the water level against the black background. I suggest making a second slot at the opposite side of the container to let some light through. You can put a cardboard flap over the slots when not monitoring the water level to keep the light out.
Thank you for this well thought out video. We’re apartment dwellers in Chicago and like lettuce that is costly at the grocery store. Your steps will help us to grow.
I love your videos! One question as you begin to remove lettuce to eat off of the plant will it continue to grow and how long does it remain good to eat and keep growing? I am growing indoors and I’m trying to create a self-sustaining amount of food to grow. I really appreciate your insights in to how long it takes to get to each of the various stages!! 🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦
Yes you should just cut from the tops to eat the amount you want. Lettuce will continue to regrow from the heart. Just leave 2-3 inches of heart alone as you cut the top of leaves to eat.
You gave me an idea with that tub. We buy the nuts all the time in those. Totally doing this. I’ll post a video of my project. I love kratky, DWC, and garden towers. Addicting!
Okay people, ANY container can be used for Kratky hydroponics. The key to hydroponics is the hydroponic fertilizer. Specific Hydroponic fertilizer that I recommend is masterblend. Google it. Instead of net pots you can use aluminum cans( soda/beer) with the tops cut off. Just bend the top over. For your container. Tape with Aluminum foil prevents light from penetrating the container.
Thanks for the video. I'm going to set up a garden outside, but this is awesome to have lettuce all the time. I live in Arizona and we can plant almost all year. I've been wanting to set up a simple hydro system like this. Glad I found you. I'll be working on mine this weekend.
This one is interesting. Adding to my list as I’ll need to try this one day. Trying your lettuce in solo cups and I am learning a lot. Adjusting as time goes on. 👍🏼
I have netcups, but have found pool noodles and chose to use those because it can get several uses out of it. I don't remember where i saw the pool noodle idea but he cut it to make 48 section cuttings. I haven't been able to get 48 out of mine. comes out to a few cents .03 each section cutting. a plus again it is reusable which will make that $0.03 really stretch out.
This is my new favorite UA-cam channel!! I’ve already watched 6 videos tonight and plan to watch ALL of them over the next week or so. Thanks for the great content!
I just came from the local dollar store. there are all kinds of neat containers to drill holes into. with all the plastic choices they have there you can make a desktop micro kratky up to the size khang just showed you. have fun. (and thank you Khang, I have watched a ton of your videos and it has helped supplement my novice, to now, pre-intermediate knowledge).
Hi is this under an LED light or a window? For the seedlings do you use regular sponge? where can I get the sponge from? is this method better than the cups? Thank you
It's all in the description. He doesn't use rockwool anymore I don't think coco coir and hydroton. Because I found him searching for how to set up my hydroton.
This looks lovely! :) How come there's enough oxygen in water for the whole process ? A lot of hydroponic setups (just like this one) include air pump to oxygenate water and I'm wondering how come this one doesn't need air pump ?
+MihaCA384 This is called the non-circulating method, often referred to as "Kratky". As the plants drink the water, the level will drop. The gap between is where oxygen the plants get their oxygen. Here's an excellent video you can watch on this topic ua-cam.com/video/6LTq3WKxYV0/v-deo.html
In the beginning, if you don't feel SUPER comfortable with the science behind the kratky method and you feel like your plants / seedlings / cuttings would benefit from some extra oxygen, then keep reading... Something I have done since my gram first showed me years ago, (well over a decade and a half now) is to take a spray bottle and use the "STREAM" (like how you twist the nozzle of the spray bottle to get it to spray differently) and youcan just STREAM spray directly into the water every day or every other day. * TIP * IF you DO decide to do this, and you do end up missing a day or two, this WIL / MAY AND HAS stunted the growth a little as youve gotten thr plant used to the extra o2. My gram had me "STREAM"-ing the tree cuttings she was doing in water until the first few roots headed / crowned (as she'd call it) Once I started doing this, I noticed a DRAMATIC difference in brassicas and more so if done every 24-48 hrs. This makes a HUGE difference with cuttings as well and I've done it with 110% success rates of every type of cutting I've taken. Hope this helps.
@@99thmonkeyresonance66 so if I understand what you are saying by streaming the water in to replace any lost water it will just by the nature of streaming force oxygen in to the water?
@@leannekenyoung if you're using the Kratky method and you're meaning to 'fill it up' back to where the water WAS, (I should have specified, my apologies) one would NEVER want to 'STREAM' enough to replace ALL of the water that's been consumed. You'd simply be 'STREAMING' anywhere between 15-20 times, given it's a 16 oz Mason jar. Anything smaller and 10 sprays will be perfect, so you're not replacing water consumed. The issue with what's being portrayed here, is that as the plant growing, using the Kratky method, the roots will grow to reach the depleting water. As the roots get farther from the water, the plants actually grow their own, "AIR ROOTS", which collect air on their own. Adding extra air, because the science for some, isn't logical, I tested THEN, with my gram and it DEF will not hurt any type of plant. It does help some though. I have noticed when I spray the cutting water, the # of sprays never gets high or more regardless of how far gone the water has depleted. Doing so, will in turn, "drown" the plants provided air roots and WILL affect and stunt the plants growth. If you're using Kratky, I would follow the *Spray Chart* I have left below. *AGAIN, this is ONLY for the beginning, when you're trying the "Kratky Method" for the 1st time, until you see the super fine air roots beginning to develop. I know some plant owners like to 'SEE' what's going on, if possible and it is VERY tempting to replace that water completely, to where you originally filled your container to. Not necessary. The "Kratky method" has been used for quite some time and the only thing I've ever seen suggested is, if you DON'T cover the outside of your water resivoir, and algae begins to grow, simply marking where your water is, BEFORE you take it out, to clean and then return your plant to- IS IT! Plants are quite majestic & magical things. They grow in the worst and even trying conditions, despite what bloggers tend to lead on. (This is simply done bc below where they tell you to 'throw it out', 'try a pesticide/fungicide', I have found, through vigorous research, 10 times out of 10, you'll find a product they suggest along with their affiliate Amazon link below for you to purchase said pesticide / fungicide. Which is the point of having their blog. To promote products & earn a %. WOW, Awesome, Spectacular. A million of thanks for this great video. I'm so impressed. You already saved me hundreds of dollars, I was planning to invest in hydroponic equipment but this is so simple, practical, affordable, reliable and best of all no investment needed.
for the containers, would Maxwell House cans work? The are Blue and not a lot of light if I look at it in from of the light. I also thought the old grounds might help with the nutrients. I've never done hydroponics
LarryM Actually the kratky method was developed mainly for leafy greens. This type of hydro setup isn't great for anything else. If you want to grow real fruit, then look at a real system with airstones/pumps etc that will handle plants with higher nutrient and water demands.
I'm sure they have and the more demanding the plant the less successful they will be with it. There's a reason a hydro setup is the way it is. This system works better for leafy greens. I'm sure you can get fruit crops from it but when you compare it to the yield of a proper hydro system, then you'll see the difference. You'll also have a lot less chance of issues with the plants..
@@ollythomas6702 yeah, I agree... this is really a method best used for plants that aren't going to be alive for a long time. I guess you could grow cucumber or tomato plant in it if you don't mind using something like a 10+ gal res or don't want to keep your plant past it's first fruits, but i would just stick to "salad greens" with kratky, or keep starting clones of your plants so they can be replaced. Kratky is so great because it's convenient, not because it's awesome. The longer you go and the more you refill the res the easier it is to get root issues. But hey, try it out... Everyone's environment is different so you could get acceptable results.
Another great video. Dollar Tree sell container like the painted one for $1 plus tax, so each would be very inexpensive to make, without having to worry about algae. Way less expensive and better concept than the hydroponic systems that I have seen so far. I'm going to be growing more food indoors and this video is just perfect. Really glad I ran into these channel.
Thank you for your videos. I took mine a step further inserting a small air stone attached to an aquarium pump (adopted idea from my Aerogarden). I will also construct some as per your instructions just to see if there's any appreciable difference.
I've been getting ready to start some Kratky gardening in my basement and when I was at the store buying my nutrients, the gentleman mentioned that I would need to change to plain water two weeks before I harvest my lettuce so that the chemicals would be out of the lettuce leaves and it'd be safe to eat. It wasn't until much later that I recalled him saying that and seeing you harvesting multiple times while you were growing your lettuce (either this video or another). This got me thinking about what he said and I was wondering how harvesting multiple times can be done when the plant is continuously being fed with chemicals? Thanks for your answer... I've got my garden started and I'm concerned about ingesting something I shouldn't. All the best! Love your vids!
Just found you Khanh and am delighted I did! I’m certain I will learn a lot from your videos; thank you so for sharing your experience, knowledge and time with us. Sandie, Central California 🌱🌱🌱
Great job Collie. I'm sure the folks who receive your weekly donations are really happy to get them. i'm anxious to see your fish video. Keep up the good work. Dad
WOW, that is spectacular growth compared with my lettuce starts in soil even though I am proud of mine. I like that black cup "collar" around the vitamin container.
A powerd portion plastic jar works great I put the net cup in and measure how far i wanted water to be at first them how far to keep the water. Some are black some are not so I planted them.
@tslee8236. You could also use masking tape and just peel away the tape to see the water level. Masking tape can easily be replaced. That way you could use regular scotch tape for the original, because masking tape is a little wider and would cover the scotch tape slot easily.
thank you sir the way you did just like my profesor in the university. just to tell you i really admire the netpot in your project with a part that hold the netpot from drowning.tq mucho mucho.
I’ve wrapped my containers with tin foil and so far I haven’t seen any algae growth. I just find for me that’s a much easier option then spray paint. Also for my container I have a lot of leftover distilled water containers they are 4 litres and I just remove the cap and no drilling required I also don’t put a net cup in I just put the plant in with it tilted on the side so the top part is out and the roots are in the water it’s never been a problem before.
Hi Khang i lovee ur videos. Im wondering if i could just cut a whole thats small enough to fit in the sponge? So i dont have to purchase the net and clay stones? Is it doable? Thank u
You can use a noodle from your swimming poor or summer fun. just cut a piece the size you need. Then cut down the side and slip it around the bottom. seems to work fine.
another good container are the all plastic 1KG coffee containers, thats what I use. you could get 1 to 2 grow sites in them, depends what you grow. specifically the folders ones, but any all plastic one is fine.

LarryM Actually the kratky method was developed mainly for leafy greens. This type of hydro setup isn't great for anything else. If you want to grow real fruit, then look at a real system with airstones/pumps etc that will handle plants with higher nutrient and water demands.
Olly Thomas people have done basically everything you can think of kratky
Thanks for this video. I will start my mini hydroponics soon.
can i sprinkle cinnamon powder on rockwool to prevent algae instead of pebbles?
yuri yuri can cinnamon powder prevent algae growth?
Other fact: if you put a pinch of Baking powder it will regulate the water's pH
+Devilish BETTA
No , Plant's Need pH 5.5 - 6.5 , Baking Soda is a Alkali , which will INCREASe the pH
Exactly thats what i said. Usually I do this with my aquariums to regulate the waters ph above 7. But those plants require lower amount of ph.
yes indeed. Thats exactly what I said. Baking Power increases pH I know that, but I just gave a fact to the public, nothing more or nothing less. :)
Great vídeos! Salute from Brazil! Thanks for sharing your experiencie!
beautiful
Simple is the best. So you are the best.
So at the end you said you can still "leaf lettuce" :)
Very clear and good explanation
I don't see why you can't trim off some leaves to eat and allow the plant to continue growing like we do in our soil garden outside.
You can, we do it all the time.
The first few trimmings are good. After a while, the lettuce starts to get bitter.
Sometimes I watch videos just to like the video and comment, most times the volume is on silent and I’m not even watching! 🤍 much love
i like all your experiments. I have been looking on how to start and you helped me alot! Thanks.
Very impressive. I too am eager to try this method.
Did you end up doing a comparison? I'm curious if you noticed any difference.
if you have clear containers, you can also wrap dark paper around it to keep the light out, if you don't have spray paint. Good video! Thank you!

Thank you soooooo much you have saved me of spending a lot of time and money for my sixth grade project
i never tried hydro without air stone very nice
Hi. Great video! I don't see the masterblend instructions. I only see 3 grams masterblend,....
Delighted that your video appeared in my feed. You have amazing results! Please could you share the brand of the solution in the containers .. thanks
Just found you Khanh and am delighted I did! I’m certain I will learn a lot from your videos; thank you so for sharing your experience, knowledge and time with us. Sandie, Central California 🌱🌱🌱
Looks like a fun project for me to start.
Excellent instruction in this video! Thank you for posting your experiment. I'm just getting started and this was very helpful.
You are quite ingenious, Khang.
That way you could use regular scotch tape for the original, because masking tape is a little wider and would cover the scotch tape slot easily.
reversing the drill! Would never thought about that if I haven't seen this lol. Not a handyman myself reason why. Thanks.
That very simple as a hobby I will try it
thank you sir
the way you did just like my profesor in the university.
just to tell you i really admire the netpot in your project with a part that hold the netpot from drowning.tq mucho mucho.
this is simple and awesome. Me and my brother will do this. Where can we learn more about Kranky method?
Great idea! We are really loading up our new grow tent! Thanks Khang!
Great video and very informative ... Hope you have a happy happy holidays...
This was Very informative. I am excited to try it.
Very nice video thank you for inspiring me
Thank you! This looks very simple and I definitely will try it out. I eat a lot of lettuce on my keto diet!
Nice...I'm growing Grand Rapid Leaf Lettuce. Leaves are the size of my palm.
You are my inspired man.. Nice to share this video..thanks..
Great Vlogs and instructional video. Clear and steady voice. love it.
+cshaopin Thanks!
Hi Khang i lovee ur videos. Im wondering if i could just cut a whole thats small enough to fit in the sponge? So i dont have to purchase the net and clay stones? Is it doable? Thank u
Neon Bomb Yes, you can, but make sure to adjust it somehow to account for the weight of the plant as they get bigger.
You can use a noodle from your swimming poor or summer fun. just cut a piece the size you need. Then cut down the side and slip it around the bottom. seems to work fine.
Explained very nicely and simply. Thank you. Great Job.
+T Abbs Thank you!
Where do I put 2 thumbs up?? Man this is great!!
another good container are the all plastic 1KG coffee containers, thats what I use. you could get 1 to 2 grow
sites in them, depends what you grow. specifically the folders ones, but any all plastic one is fine.
Super, super helpful video! Thank you!
Fantastic work, I learnt a lot from you
