Great little video. I’ve been a social worker now for 19yrs. Started out in child protection. Moved into LAC & Adoption work, Youth Offending. And now for the last 14yrs in CAMHS. I’ve always wanted to work with troubled/traumatised/unwell kids. I’m also a trainee family / systemic psychotherapist. But have done CBT, DBT & EMDR too. You’re right. The vicarious trauma were exposed to can be exhausting. Good self-care and regular use of clinical and managerial supervision is vitally important.
I’ve been a social worker since 2009 and I have to change the population that I work with every couple of years. Not only to save myself from burn out but to keep the work that I do fresh to me. I feel that I can work with a lot of populations so I like to give and use my gifts to almost all populations. Im working in hospice now.

I've done hospice social work previously, I loved it. Currently, I am working on the aged care assessment team and I find that very rewarding.
This is so true. Social work is a really challenging profession especially coming from a different cultural background. I work as a case manager in disability sector and it's draining and i'm at the point of considering changing career. Social work is not for everyone.
Look after you Albert! It's necessary to constantly check in with ourselves too.
This is very helpful honestly , everyone telling you to go for social work. I keep saying , it’s what God wants for me that I would follow.

it hit hard when you are an ardent follower of Christ and at the same time a social worker. recently i had a situation whereby my client was asking for abortion. i only advised her to see a physician for that purpose
I am in my first year and I am actually referring to the Bible in class and it drives me crazy to adapt to the demonic society values etc I am going to drop out

An interesting point you raise. I do not consider it my job to tell clients what to do/not do, and in the same vein, you should not feel responsible for your client's choices. You offer information and support in what the client decides. They are an expert in their own lives afterall.
Hi Chioma!
You touched upon a very important topic and I’m so glad you did it. These are all the things that I asked myself before starting my Masters in social work. I was quite skeptical if I would be able to overcome these challenges in my practice because I come from a background where I have seen people I love suffer from such issues and I have personally also suffered and have trauma. But I’m glad I’m doing social work. I might not be able to overcome those challenges every single time and that’s okay, but I’m gonna keep trying.

I recently subscribed to your channel and I'm glad i found you. Every thing you said here hits home for me, I've volunteered with Marginalized population and like you said it's gonna conflict with a lot of things a person believes in. I've been able to detach myself from taking the work home and I have to confess it's not always easy. I look forward to being a licensed medical social worker someday.

I’ve realized as a social worker that most of the frameworks, polices, and regulations we have to work within, often can’t contain everything we carry. A lot of social workers start off wanting to really help people then get discouraged by the limitations and red tape we have to sift through. (How much more our clients/patients though.)
Oh, the systems! I agree that they are a huge contributor to our stress.

Thank you for sharing your open perspective.I think when we are being challenged with different values and ethics is also an opportunity to look within and also question our own values and perhaps what we perceived as normal as children can be actually seen as abuse in other parts of the world.

I love this introduction….and if you made that outfit it’s lovely by the way..and it’s also a beautiful way to do a vlog love this.. have learnt something different from this I would try this out in my vlogs thank you..… social work is one profession I love and truly it isn’t for everyone because social work can be hard mentally and emotionally, from things I have seen and heard.. that’s the thing about this job social work, thank you for bringing this to light and it has answered some of my questions as well..love this ❤

Another helpful video Chioma! Thank you for talking about the challenges you've faced being a social worker, it takes a lot of self awareness and critically thinking through your experiences, values and beliefs.
I feel like now that I have been studying/being on placement, it solidified the idea that social work is something I would want to do and see myself doing in the future. Of course there are aspects of it that might be less exciting such as admin tasks, but they are part of the job and are equally as important as the direct clinical work, so I dont mind it. :)
Understanding and looking out for the signs of burnout are so important, I noticed my quality of sleep was declining and had to adjust my self care to avoid anything further. what are your favourite self care tips Chioma?😊
Hey Vicky, good to 'see' you here. All very valid points you made. I have found setting boundaries at work to be really helpful. It helps that I am in a supportive team.

Australia. Vic DHHS offered me a job in 2019 but a family bereavement, then COVID and Lockdowns prevented me from migrating at that time. I’m thinking of reapplying now 🤔

Have been following your channel for a while now because Im thinking of start studying social work too next year. I love how you share your experience particularly in the domestic violence /trauma field. I wonder however on how do most social worker work on dealing with a case because it seems like we are the only one who are involved with the whole process as you mentioned it (reporting, admin task, court hearing etc). How does the team / group support from peers manifest in the job? I was thinking that being the one solely responsible for the case is what makes the job overwhelming at times.
Thanks for your question. No, you will not be working alone. It's common to be in a team with supervisors, managers, team leaders and other colleagues, but you will have your own case load if you are in a case manager role.
This is why I have also looked at non clinical roles in Social Work. Would anyone know if there are many opportunities in Australia in terms of non clinical side of Social Work?

Yes, Social workers can be found in lots of work environments. You can do project work in community development, work as a researcher, trainer etc.

Yes you can if you meet all the requirements for eligibility for membership with the AASW

You can’t expect someone telling you what to do in your life, listen to what she is saying in the video and if is something that resonates with you, then you should consider other field.
