Loved this video. Between 1969 and 1971, Soho was my patch. I rented a tiny little basement photo studio in Gerrard Street, opposite the Tailor & Cutter magazine. To contribute a couple of personal musical reminiscences I once saw John Lennon and Yoko Ono leaving Lee Ho Fook's, in Macclesfield Street. I made De Hems, the Dutch pub which was just opposite, my local, and there one afternoon had the honour of buying a couple of pints for Eric Burdon (of the Animals). To shamelessly take this name dropping to the limit, I should also mention that I also photographed Mary Quant, the inventor of the mini-skirt. Ah, the swinging sixties...

Excellent stuff Rob. I used to work at Keith Johnsons on Great Marlborough Street in the mid-eighties. Walking down Wardour Street in my lunch hour one day, I literally bumped into Phil Collins as he stepped out of a doorway on to the street. I nearly bowled him over!

Stumbled on this great channel quite by chance.
Not sure why he doesn't have a 1m+ subscribers - the content is just what visitors and residents of London need, once you've done the Eye, Madam Tussaud's, History Museum and all that shit.

It was the second door, I was a cloak room boy there when it was known as Gossips which was still mostly a goth and rock club a good 15yrs ago. I never knew the whole time I was there that it was formally known as the Bat Cave but there was a small area out the back that was referred to as the Batcave.

I've forgotten how great a city London is but your videos are reminding me again. In 1997 I stayed a week near the British Museum and would walk to and fro from Soho and Soho Square every day. It felt like the center of the world at that time. Have been to the city 3 times (from Canada) and am vowing to go back in the not too distant future.

at the back of what was/is Andys guitarshop in Denmark st,
a 16th century barn was discovered and converted into a very small but perfectly formed music venue called "the twelve bar",
very trendy, it became quite the thing to do a gig there in the late eighties' ?
I don't know if it still exists.

Just a couple of interesting wee things about It's Not Unusual, Reg Dwight plays piano on not just the demo but the proper released version of the song! Along with Jimmy Page on lead guitar and Vic Flick(the guy who plays the Bond theme) on guitar too. It was actually Chris Slade(future AC/DC drummer) who ran across and got Reg Dwight.

I recently found your channel, and first and foremost, I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my only sister last year and it's surprising how little the siblings are remembered when mentioning a loss. Again, so sorry.
On another note I am loving your show. I've always really romanticized London and I doubt I'll ever get to see it with my own eyes. Even though I'm only in my 30s, I don't know if I'll ever be able to travel abroad. My all time favorite band is Tyrannosaurus Rex and TRex. Do you have a Marc Bolan tour guide video? Great walk around Soho, although it missed the old poet's haunt The Society Club, that was established in 1927 on Ingestre Place, combined vintage book shop during the day and late night cocktail club at night; and wow those cocktails were as tasty as they were powerful. Sadly rising rents closed the place down.

The gig I went at was at The Marquee. The Doctors of Madness.

The second door was the Batcave. It was the first club I went to on my first night London when I lived in London in 1984.

Amazing you make so many people want to follow you around on that tour! I for one would be like a giddy child in a candy store walking around there!

This the one of my favourite episodes. I knew where Denmark St was. I passed it several times walking along Charing Cross Road but I knew nothing about its history. Shame on me! Thank you, Joolz.

Funnily enough the entrance to Gossips / Batcave / Blitz club was the door that the guy you asked about it went through. Many a great night there!

A bit late but you didn't say anything about the Flamingo club in 33 - 37 wardour street open between 1952 and 1969 it played an important role in the British rhythm and blues and modern jazz it opened it's doors at midnight and shut at six in the morning, the Who played there along with Ska musicians and of course one of my favourite musicians Zoot Money Happy days

I can go back even further. Before the Marquee it was called The Flamingo Club...."Jazz at the Flamingo". Keep up the good work!

The Flamingo club was at the Chinatown end of Wardour Street No 33-37. Later became The WAG, now occupied by O'Neill's. The live music venue on the top floor of O'Neills, is actually called "The Flamingo Bar" today.

Sorry to hear about your brother. Top video as usual. It puts into context all those exotic places we used to read about in NME, where one day we were going to follow in their footsteps and become rock stars, said the overweight retired old bloke with grey hair who is still one chord short of a three chord melody.
