  • Narrated by I.P. Freely. This is from the 1979 BBC production of 'I Claudius' which is based on the book by Robert Graves back in 1934. The story takes place in the times and rule of Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, and in particular Claudius who witnessed most of that history and often played the fool and was able to come across many secrets since his family didn't take him seriously due mostly to his stammer. Claudius was no dummy though, and though he did have serious limitations he was still able to stay out of harms way during times of treachery and insanity. Claudius' good fortune starts to eventually fall apart a bit as he has absolutely no clue that he's married to the biggest slut in Rome, and because Claudius is old and quite clueless by his clever young wife who is beyond psychotic behind closed doors. Claudius' main advisors gently break him from his ignorance and go over his head to have his wife executed as Claudius was still in shock, though they did trick him into signing the death warrant. Many of George RR Martin's characters from Game of Thrones were inspired by this series, and period of history which these people are from. As big of a world as Martin's is, you can bet there are many other histories, people, and wars that he used as inspiration for his epic monstrosity of a story.
