I'm pretty sure the first fish was not a sergeant baker, but a red rock cod. And you were right about not wanting to touch it, as the some of spines are poisonous (fortescue style). Supposed to be good eating though ("poor man's lobster") but I've always just set them loose using lip grippers over the side, not wanting them sitting in the kayak with me.
You're smashing this , Nev. So impressed at where your film making skills are at now.... not to mention the amount of content you produce. Kudos to you!
Next time you fish both of those offshore areas mate use a 1/8oz or 1/6oz jigheads on a 6/0 or 7/0 hook. The slower that plastic drops through the water column more the strikes you'll get from snapper. The heavier the jighead the more scorpion cod you'll be getting. The strike of a good snapper while your plastic is dropping is always a good one. Well done on the snapper and tusky you did get too
I'm so happy you got the courage to go ocean fishing in the kayak. It paid off, I was so stoked for you when you caught that huge Snapper. Looking forward to more kayak sea fishing mate. Tight Lines from the Bahamas 🇧🇸🙋🏽♂️
Hey nev, could you possibly show us some of the settings you have your sounder on such as how you get such clear pictures and the different colour themes? Cheers
Great vid Nev, nice red on the plastic!! I find over here in NZ often get the bigger reds on lighter jig heads as they like to smoke it on the drop especially a nice slow drop on a light head, they also swallow head first so often use the smaller 3/0 hooks even on a bigger plastic !
Great video and great fish. Wise to try the inshore reefs when you can. It's been a bit tough fishing in the river where you are (could be the persistent westerlies), but there are plenty of mullet down near the mouth. That means the big jewfish will be there. Find the deep holes and fish the tide changes, if you can. Big soft plastics or livies and you will hook one. On the last full moon someone landed a 30 kg jew from the wall.
Enjoying your channel Nev. Nice snapper you got there mate. Any chance of another catch and cook segment sometime. I enjoy them. Many thanks for sharing. Take care and atb from across the ditch.
You should have a look at mapheox kill bags. They make one for kayaks which goes at the front. That way you can set up a bucket with an airator for livies at the back.
Mate your videos have been getting better and better! Absolute tank of a snapper, those little red rock cod are delicious too - flesh is really similar to lobster.
2:13 the red scorpion fish much resembles the stone fish. The spines are toxic but usually pain only lasts for a few hours to a day. One spined me through my fishing boots off the rocks and that was not fun! Some people also call them poor mans lobster, the meat is surpassingly white and soft, I assume its boney though.. Awesome vid Nev!
solid snapper i just went kayaking with a friend yesterday and as we were leaving i caught a 29 centimeter pinky and now im trying to sell stuff and get a $450 fishing kayake from bcf and follow in your steps
Great job on the first offshore trip Nev!! I’ve never been offshore in my kayak but I can definitely see how it would make you nervous as! Great video brother and keep up the great work thanks for sharing your adventure😃👍🛶🎣🐟🐟🎣🛶

Cheers and hope to see you do more of the offshore stuff!🎣🐟🛶😃👍👊
From well over a decade of fishing for snapper with plastics in NZ i can tell ya you want a lightly weighted jighead and a slow sink rate. The vast majority of nice snapper i have caught have been on the drop, you will still get em tweaking it on the bottom but the bigger models seem to prefer coming up off the bottom and nailing sinking placcys. Also i am jealous you dont have a 6 month demersal ban like we do in WA
@@NevsFishing absolutely. Great for all offshore species. Just take the fillets off and use them for strip baits. Fresh is better but I freeze whatever is left over 👍
The Bait you were catching, and what you call a yakka? we call halalu and the adults, Akule, or the English name I believe is Mackeral Scad. They come in schools in the summer time and are huge schools and are great bait for trevally, wahoo, snappers, mahimahi, tuna, barracuda, amberjack, marlin, swordfish. We use a Flow Troll to keep some of them alive, small bait bucket that you could tie to your kayak and troll along with you, the flowing water will keep them lively and alive for you.
Hey Nev. Great work mate on that Snapper and Tusky! I have a few questions for you: 1. That offshore seems pretty tame with minimal shore waves. I'd be keen to one day take my Intex Mariner offshore, and it looks safe enough here. Would you be willing to share the rough location? 2. I've never used a Sabiki rig before ... have you got any demo's on how it works? does it need to be baited, or just drop it in? 3. Do you have any training vids on how you use navionics to find good spots like drop offs and stuff? I've never used it and keen to learn. Thanks
