Detroiter here to say I am so glad to see this cake on such a huge youtube channel. After the original creators bakery burned down in the great Chicago Fire, the creator moved to Detroit, where their bakery made it famous right here in our city. Great stuff to see, especially from international creators.

Chocolate Bumpy Cake was created in Detroit Michigan by Sanders Candy. Since its inception it’s become a Michigan Summertime staple. So much so that this year (2023) there was a mass shortage of Sanders Bumpy Cakes and there became something of a secondary market for them. I don’t know that I’ve ever had one with mocha flavoring, but I could see that being quite nice.

The coffee is actually in the original recipe! it's not enough to really taste like mocha, it's just enough to deepen the flavor of the chocolate.

So glad to see a Detroit institution making its way to the UK. Great job--the only thing I would change is to use a little less ganache so the bumps stand out on the whole cake. Sanders sometimes makes them in different flavors-vanilla, or (my favorite) carrot with buttercream "bumps" and cream cheese frosting.

I also have a chocolate cake recipe that uses instant coffee and it just enhances the chocolate flavor. It's delicious! About instant coffee, it's the only coffee I drink at home because I can never find a K-Cup that I like and I don't want to make a full pot of coffee using a drip coffee maker just for me. I've found instant coffee is really good and you can make it as light or as strong as you want. So, I'm right there with you and Mrs. B! 😀 Again, I really enjoy your videos, and I can't wait to make this cake! 😋 Cheers! 🙂

in the early 1900s the Sanders Chocolates company in Detroit trademarked the "Bumpy cake" in the current form that you know of it today but it was actually invented much earlier in 1773 in a place called boston. The original purpose to invent this new style of cake was so that they could have something interesting for their tea party.

Coffee and chocolate pair exceptionally well. If you add one to the other (and this works in both directions!), it amps up the flavor. I always make chocolate cake and brownies with coffee instead of water. I get rave reviews for both - even from coffee haters! The coffee doesn’t taste like coffee in a chocolate dessert, it just make the chocolate even more complex and chocolate-y. Using instant, pre-ground, “bad” gas station coffee, etc is perfectly fine here. Nobody will be able to tell there’s even coffee in it, much less that you used the cheap stuff. If you really want a coffee flavor, use the same volume of espresso shots in place of regular brewed coffee. It’s won’t be pronounced (or give you a caffeine buzz), but it sure is delicious! Bonus culinary tip: add a bit of instant hot cocoa mix to (hot!) coffee and watch even mediocre coffee suddenly sing!

Gonna have to hard disagree with you on the "won't even taste the coffee" bit there. I hate coffee with a passion. I can smell and taste the slightest bit of coffee in my food, and it makes me refuse to eat it. If you so much as use the same spoon to stir your coffee and then stir non-coffee cake batter, I'm not going to eat that cake.
