Captain Q I am 100% with you on anchoring with a chain leader and nylon rope. Modern anchors are designated as "super high holding" and therefore only need sufficient chain to get the shank down and the fluke(s) to set. I like nylon double braid rope of similar strength to the chain; note wet rope has a lower breaking strength than given by the manufacturers.

Back in the 80's I had an early 70's Dickerson 35 center cockpit ketch, which back then were wood. I had the opportunity to visit their facility in Trappe, MD. When they transitioned to fiberglass they increased the length to 37' and had a cutter rig, sloop rig, as well as the ketch rig. The ketch rig was available in an aft and center cockpit. My 35' was a center cockpit. Dickerson also built a very limited number of Dickerson 50' ketch and cutter rigs. They also built the Bruce Farr 37 of which there were quite a few race winners. That 4'6" draft is king in the Chesapeake! I would have to always return to my dock at near high tide, but it was super stable in the shallow, choppy Chesapeake. Loved the earlier wooden Dickersons…but I don’t like balsa core below the waterline. Strong, maybe..but a tiny breach in outer skin from thru hull (or worse) and you can wind up with a giant sponge on your hands😜
I own a Dickerson 36 (my one video on UA-cam is about buying it) and it is a great boat. One configuration of the 37 that you did not mention was the "Aft Cabin" (center cockpit) Ketch - which is also the configuration of my 36. When I was looking, I wanted a center cockpit ketch in this size range, and the Dickerson 36, 37, and Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35 were all available in this configuration and on my short list.
Another beauty Captain Q and Randay. This gem would be perfect to buy now, get the spit and polish done while the storms blow through this winter and come spring, provision and sail off. Thank you for another wonderful Thursday evening tour. Have a great weekend.
You gents have been bringing us some real gems lately and I hate to have to say it again but what a little dream boat to bomb around the Bahamas on especially considering her shallow draft and how solidly she's built. I'd have no issues getting her all up to date with current amenities, adding some solar w/lithium bank, possibly some soft start ACs, modern fridge and freezer, some high tech nav toys just to make the wife happy, a jungle gym/solar arch as the captain calls them, a modern 12 to 14ft dingy with a decent motor on the back and away I'd go be it just cruising or crossing oceans. I totally agree with the Captain she's an easy 47 points on the Captain Q rating wheel. I really hope in a couple years your still finding these gems so I can finally snag one up for myself. As always thank you again gents for showing us that being able to afford a yacht and make your dreams of sailing/cruising a reality. That it doesn't require you to be a millionaire to just get out there. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

aaarrrggghhh.... If I didn't have some personal issues preventing me from acquiring another boat, I would be all over this one. The Dickerson has been my favorite boat since the early 70's. And one with a Ketch rig is the cherry on top of the float! She needs a little help but, aside from the teak decks, nothing major that one can see. Certainly, a survey is in order. The teak decks could be an interesting (read costly) challenge but, maybe not needing too much attention right away. CQ, you are killing this land locked Sailor! (But I am loving it!) keep up the good work!

Captain Q is right. As long as you're anchored on sand or mud, nylon's a great anchor rode. 2 or 3 fathoms of chain to weigh down the shank of the anchor so it gets a good bite and Bob's your uncle. Very comfortable. Don't do it on coral or rocks, though. The motion will saw the rope in two. Or fray it at the least. What a great boat! Very pretty and nicely set up for short to medium range cruising. And it seems solid and well-designed and well-appointed enough that setting it up for intercontinental cruising could be achievable without having to spend millions in redesigning and rebuilding. Assuming there are no major, hideously expensive problems (blisters, hidden spar or keel bolt corrosion, electrical gremlins, sails in tatters, etc.) the price seems fairly reasonable, as well.
Big thing with hatches leaking as the Captain pointed out is the Rubber, it can dry rot or get hard and no longer supports it's function as an "Elastomer" thus as one might muse loosing it's Memory, loosing viscoelasticity (i.e. both viscosity and elasticity) best replaced and you're sorted...If cutting / trimming is required on the Joint, a Scarf Joint is the way to Go...

Nice boat learned a lot from this video. Always a survey. This boat looked good but I would really be concerned about a cored hull and moisture below the teak decks that clearly need some work
I look forward to these highly educational and entertaining videos more and more every week... thanks for sharing another wonderful sailboat.. winter weather has hit here in northwest Illinois so I've been looking at where I can go to take some sailing lessons come spring and I'm also looking at decent used sailboats.. I've been in love with the Cheoy Lee that you all done a video on and recently I discovered the Defour sailboats... I checked out online several 35 footers and they have a really great layout and awesome use of space.. their 35 foot sailboats are laid out like a boat in the 40 footer line.. they're amazing..I checked out a Defour A9000 that's for sale in Oakland California.. it's a aluminum boat and like all Defours built for speed and comfort.. maybe Capt Q & Randaay can find a 70s to early 90s Defour in the 30 or 40 footer size with a decent pricetag to cover in a future video because I'm curious about what Capt Q knows of these sailboats.. thanks again and God bless you 2

I don't understand why they have such a great price on the 70s thru 90s models..

I made it to my favorite part of the week finally , the Captain Q/ Ran Day, sailboat magic show. Never disappoints. Beautiful woodwork but it's the shallow draft that interests me without a centerboard. This would be fantastic for the Bahamas as well. I love the ketch rig but couldn't you just see a version of this as a gaff rigged schooner? Impractical of course but so is poetry. Fair winds and following seas good sirs.
Terrific episode! The Dickerson ketch was on our shortlist- never did get to see one- and we went with a Pearson 365 (loved your tour of that one too). In particular I want to pass along our thanks for solving a mystery on our Pearson. Like this Dickerson, our Pearson also has a wood trimmed trapezoid shaped form on the over head in the V berth. Now I see its purpose- it supports a map drawer! Unfortunately, the drawer is nowhere to be found on our boat.
Thanks for the correction; you're right, Q. The filler has cushion glued to it so I didn't persist to try it. Thanks to your comment, I looked at the original brochure and see that the space is intended for the filler. Dean
When testing the forehatch, rather than hosing it down from above you could do a chalk test like we used to do in the Navy as part of our PMS. Just chalk the knife edge all the way around, dog down the hatch, then open it and see where on the gasket the chalk is missing. That is the spot where it will leak. Adjust the dogging mechanisms accordingly then retest it until the chalk is present on the gasket all the way around. This was I think an annual or more frequent check on every hatch on every ship in the Navy.
Nice to see another fair sized boat ,clean simple functional love it. and a a price most can afford .I'm seeing a trend here . 1 boats like this are living at the dock ready to go .the second type are the larger and more fancy one's spending time on shore or in some cases for the really top end inside a shed .this is all well and good And i understand why .But as a normal guy I will take the in the water ready to go on a whim boat any day .maybe i should own one of each ? one for every day and one to show off.
Great C bay boat. Are you sure they didn't do this in wood? I know you love split rigs especially coming from era of pre decent roller furling. My parents rigs were all hank on. I'm one of a very guys that can explain the " fast" hank on sail changes. I expect Q can do the same. I've always described the white with wood trim as Herreshoff style interior.
Who knew they put rack and pinion steering in boats in the 1980s, kinda sorta. Neat boat and priced pretty right. Blue water for probably around $50,000 with what needs to be fixed, and that's if you hire the work out. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Lovely boat but I'd subtracted at least 10 for all the leaks and a teak deck that's at it's end. Like, look at the damage over the nav station. Also a new fridge was needed, and did we see the sails?

oversize shorts for boat manuverability and randays wide angle tend to exaggerate them ...and of course they are a little old and spindly ...but ive always liked them best of my components but thank you for watching ..ill stay to long pants to make you and may wife happy:-)
it does eliminate a lot of cable and sheaves and wire attachments etc which require a little more supervision but overall millions of miles have been sailed with good old Edson wire quadrant rigs thanks for watching
no .... once tom Lucke took over they were all glass . the earlier Dickersons may have in corporate some plywood with their hard chine designs but i am not certain
@@YachtHunters OK, cool enough. I just recalled the company continued to use the plywood covered fiberglass in the deck after they went to the rounded fiberglass hull. I mainly looked at the 40 foot CC models which were otherwise tempting boats.

Fantastic idea. Our method was to calm the stomach with pretzel rods… or just ‘Rods’ for those looking like they might be in trouble. Seemed to work most of the time

they defintly have their place in a variety of sailing situations i've sailed both and have no particular issues but the PB drew 8' of sold modified full keel. i never worried about finding the bottom

@@YachtHunters Maine Yacht Center has aĺ the benefits of being in Portland and access to restaurants, shopping, groceries and some marine services. It will also be flooded with tourists and cruise ships traffic. Also lots of boat and island ferry traffic. I grew up on Casco Bay and and love it, lots of places to explore. The northern and eastern part are less congested. Robinhood will have a much more protected ancorage. Much calmer and quite at night. There is a good restaurant on site. Robinhood also has a good reputation for marine services. Check out UA-cam channel The Atticus Project they spent a summer at Robinhood. It is tough to get to town etc. Boothbay harbor is a dinghy ride away across the river through Townsend gut. Perhaps a month in each to vary your experience. Depends what you are looking for.
Sailor or not this channel at every episode is just plain and simple good entertainment. You don"t have to be an F1 driver to watch Lewis Hamilton win a race and you don"t have to be a yachtsman to enjoy this series as we all can dream big dreams. Anybody has some experience between the alden steering wheel vs the pedestal steering? To me it looks like the alden system is more difficult if the boat is heeling over and you want to stand up behind the wheel to get a good overview. Does this system have any (dis) advantages if you want to use a selfsteering windvane?
it should have no bearing on the vane choice that i know of like a servo pendulum but after a firsthand knowledge of a hydrovane from my son in laws trip over the top this past summer I would take a long look at one of those myself
I follow you guys with glee. Lately it is like every boat you show gets a "participation trophy". Like the kids in Marin County at svhool. Even the slowest get a trophy. Your earlier evaluations seem more critical and show it in the ratings. A sailboat getting 46 points today would be worth only 26 with t b e parameters of your earlier scoring. I mean comparable boats scoring wildly different scores. I prefer the earlier, more conservative scoring. I do watch your shows with great zeal. Good luck with the Scheel, Ran day.
I love these videos very much but theres so many ads that interrupt the videos so often... is there any way to change that? Its no fun to be watching and involved and then have to keep shutting off the ads after 5 seconds... hoping something can be done...
thanks for the feedback... we have it set to 'automatic' but I believe there's a way to try to reduce them. From what I understand it takes time to configure but definitely worth taking a look at. The interruptions can really hurt the flow.... thanks for being patient!

Have you ever heard him say this boat is a POS? A 37' boat is too small for the ocean. It is slow. You will get caught in bad weather. It does not have enough space for a decent sized crew. It is a coastal boat.

Good point! but a survey will enlighten you to go forward make a counter offer or walk away..its all that simple
I look forward to these highly educational and entertaining videos more and more every week... thanks for sharing another wonderful sailboat.. winter weather has hit here in northwest Illinois so I've been looking at where I can go to take some sailing lessons come spring and I'm also looking at decent used sailboats.. I've been in love with the Cheoy Lee that you all done a video on and recently I discovered the Defour sailboats... I checked out online several 35 footers and they have a really great layout and awesome use of space.. their 35 foot sailboats are laid out like a boat in the 40 footer line.. they're amazing..I checked out a Defour A9000 that's for sale in Oakland California.. it's a aluminum boat and like all Defours built for speed and comfort.. maybe Capt Q & Randaay can find a 70s to early 90s Defour in the 30 or 40 footer size with a decent pricetag to cover in a future video because I'm curious about what Capt Q knows of these sailboats.. thanks again and God bless you 2

@@YachtHunters I don't know much but they seem like a great layout and well built boat.. think there were a couple in the 30 to 40 foot range that I found by using Google.. there's several in Maryland, Massachusetts and Connecticut on yachtworld.. hopefully one will show up for sale close to you 2 so I can get Capt Qs professional opinion.. I don't understand why they have such a great price on the 70s thru 90s models..
What a beauty!! Captain if you get time in one of your future vids please can you give us your thoughts on main sheet systems eg is mid boom sheeting suitable for offshore sailing??
most of the systems work fine ...i just always liked the simplicity of boom end main sheet terminating in the cock pit for easy handling day and night

I made it to my favorite part of the week finally , the Captain Q/ Ran Day, sailboat magic show. Never disappoints. Beautiful woodwork but it's the shallow draft that interests me without a centerboard. This would be fantastic for the Bahamas as well. I love the ketch rig but couldn't you just see a version of this as a gaff rigged schooner? Impractical of course but so is poetry. Fair winds and following seas good sirs.
just add a real spinnaker, a mizzen staysail and fore staysail and go reaching like a cloud on the horizon all white of course

Terrific episode! The Dickerson ketch was on our shortlist- never did get to see one- and we went with a Pearson 365 (loved your tour of that one too). In particular I want to pass along our thanks for solving a mystery on our Pearson. Like this Dickerson, our Pearson also has a wood trimmed trapezoid shaped form on the over head in the V berth. Now I see its purpose- it supports a map drawer! Unfortunately, the drawer is nowhere to be found on our boat.
well that may not have been for a drawer in your case , rather a place to store the pesky vee berth filler inverted ?
Thanks for the correction; you're right, Q. The filler has cushion glued to it so I didn't persist to try it. Thanks to your comment, I looked at the original brochure and see that the space is intended for the filler. Dean
When testing the forehatch, rather than hosing it down from above you could do a chalk test like we used to do in the Navy as part of our PMS. Just chalk the knife edge all the way around, dog down the hatch, then open it and see where on the gasket the chalk is missing. That is the spot where it will leak. Adjust the dogging mechanisms accordingly then retest it until the chalk is present on the gasket all the way around. This was I think an annual or more frequent check on every hatch on every ship in the Navy.

Nice to see another fair sized boat ,clean simple functional love it. and a a price most can afford .I'm seeing a trend here . 1 boats like this are living at the dock ready to go .the second type are the larger and more fancy one's spending time on shore or in some cases for the really top end inside a shed .this is all well and good And i understand why .But as a normal guy I will take the in the water ready to go on a whim boat any day .maybe i should own one of each ? one for every day and one to show off.

Great C bay boat. Are you sure they didn't do this in wood? I know you love split rigs especially coming from era of pre decent roller furling. My parents rigs were all hank on. I'm one of a very guys that can explain the " fast" hank on sail changes. I expect Q can do the same. I've always described the white with wood trim as Herreshoff style interior.

@@YachtHunters I sold a Farr 37 Dickerson built boat back when. Racer/cruiser. I'm not sure going down the race boat path was a good idea.
Who knew they put rack and pinion steering in boats in the 1980s, kinda sorta. Neat boat and priced pretty right. Blue water for probably around $50,000 with what needs to be fixed, and that's if you hire the work out. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Lovely boat but I'd subtracted at least 10 for all the leaks and a teak deck that's at it's end. Like, look at the damage over the nav station. Also a new fridge was needed, and did we see the sails?

That direct geared rudder control is stronger and a lot more reliable than cable type.
it does eliminate a lot of cable and sheaves and wire attachments etc which require a little more supervision
but overall millions of miles have been sailed with good old Edson wire quadrant rigs thanks for watching
Did he mention that Dickerson sailboats are partially or wholly constructed from plywood with fiberglass over it? Isn't that right?
no .... once tom Lucke took over they were all glass .
the earlier Dickersons may have in corporate some plywood with their hard chine designs but i am not certain
@@YachtHunters OK, cool enough. I just recalled the company continued to use the plywood covered fiberglass in the deck after they went to the rounded fiberglass hull. I mainly looked at the 40 foot CC models which were otherwise tempting boats.

they defintly have their place in a variety of sailing situations i've sailed both and have no particular issues
but the PB drew 8' of sold modified full keel. i never worried about finding the bottom

@@YachtHunters Maine Yacht Center has aĺ the benefits of being in Portland and access to restaurants, shopping, groceries and some marine services. It will also be flooded with tourists and cruise ships traffic. Also lots of boat and island ferry traffic. I grew up on Casco Bay and and love it, lots of places to explore. The northern and eastern part are less congested. Robinhood will have a much more protected ancorage. Much calmer and quite at night. There is a good restaurant on site. Robinhood also has a good reputation for marine services. Check out UA-cam channel The Atticus Project they spent a summer at Robinhood. It is tough to get to town etc. Boothbay harbor is a dinghy ride away across the river through Townsend gut. Perhaps a month in each to vary your experience. Depends what you are looking for.

Anybody has some experience between the alden steering wheel vs the pedestal steering? To me it looks like the alden system is more difficult if the boat is heeling over and you want to stand up behind the wheel to get a good overview. Does this system have any (dis) advantages if you want to use a selfsteering windvane?
it should have no bearing on the vane choice that i know of like a servo pendulum but after a firsthand knowledge of a hydrovane from my son in laws trip over the top this past summer I would take a long look at one of those myself

I follow you guys with glee. Lately it is like every boat you show gets a "participation trophy". Like the kids in Marin County at svhool. Even the slowest get a trophy. Your earlier evaluations seem more critical and show it in the ratings. A sailboat getting 46 points today would be worth only 26 with t b e parameters of your earlier scoring. I mean comparable boats scoring wildly different scores. I prefer the earlier, more conservative scoring. I do watch your shows with great zeal. Good luck with the Scheel, Ran day.

I love these videos very much but theres so many ads that interrupt the videos so often... is there any way to change that? Its no fun to be watching and involved and then have to keep shutting off the ads after 5 seconds... hoping something can be done...
thanks for the feedback... we have it set to 'automatic' but I believe there's a way to try to reduce them. From what I understand it takes time to configure but definitely worth taking a look at. The interruptions can really hurt the flow.... thanks for being patient!

Have you ever heard him say this boat is a POS? A 37' boat is too small for the ocean. It is slow. You will get caught in bad weather. It does not have enough space for a decent sized crew. It is a coastal boat.
