How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a UA-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

As A former dairy farmer , I didn't like spreading fertilizer on hay ground before first crop .....2 reasons being , the ground is still soft and susceptible to compaction and even cutting ruts .... and also A bigger reason is it makes your first cutting too brushy and not fine stemmed better quality feed 🤔 ..... timing is better right after 1st cutting is my opinion 🚜
That spreader is about the only thing that hasn't changed in 50 years. Thanks for the video.
The drivw wheel now has no rubber other then that still the same and they're stainless now
Great video Ryan!
Great video spreading good cheer in the alfalfa fields Ryan 😂👍🏾
Thanks for sharing your updates, wishing you and your family the best.
Another great video Ryan, can't wait to see how many extra bales the fertilizer helped with.
Great video Ryan. Hope the weather straightens out so you can get the corn planted
Great video as always
Love the videos keep up the great work and can’t wait to see the seeding videos.💪💪💢💢
The best video of this kind I have ever seen. Some serious camera work Ryan.
Great job on your video, I enjoy watching y'all get your work done.
Great Video Ryan, great run down on fert spreading and the spreader, thanks for shearing
Nice one... hope your keeping well.. stay safe 🏴
Let the alfalfa grow now😉👍 looking forward to planting videos!😁👍
I've recently started working here in ontario for a company that rents out those spreaders. I go down the road every day all day. We have that exact spreader. I'm catching up on your videos on a rainy Sunday here rain we don't need right now but it is what it is. Great seeing you again ryan and hope to see you at nfms 2025
Great job on the video 💯 📸❤❤❤
Nice video
Hey Ryan!!
Great job Ryan, hopefully that should send green to the clouds🤞👍🙏😎
Hey Ryan Looks like you did what a lawn fertilizer person would do.Except that your equipment Is much larger.
Good video
Tankky master
A little field compacrion never hurt no-one.
Hi ryan
Hey Ryan, how long ago did you buy that truck?
Great video Ryan. Quick question are they done putting up the solar panels and is it in operation? I think there is a place for solar panels but not where it takes good farm land out of production. Take care and have a great upcoming week 👍
IMHO if one takes out good farm land they should take out some golf courses as well!
Can I come and see you later in the year
Ryan, what is the seed you used for your alfalfa, is it normal or round up ready
Hey Ryan, Doing it smart do the flat ground first as I have to do here. Thank you for a great video. Take Care, Take it Easy and Trust JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing how different spreaders in the states are to Europe! European machines are spreading 45m width at 15mph.
Does K move from the surface to the grass roots. On the western high plains we have up to 1000 ppm on testing. No K fertilizer here.
When will you do a video on the barn at the main farm after the fire?
He said he was advised not to post anything till all investigations are done.
I have the video made, but I won't be posting until after the insurance figures their stuff out because they're trying to low ball us on what we're covered for.
Ok I understand
Do you have any zippered hoodies?
Ryan, would you recommend the 7920 as a planting tractor for a beginning farmer? Also will y’all be using the 40202 soon?
The 7920 is a great fit for the planter. I think it keeps rows better than the 4640 did without the MFWD
Thanks
Hi Ryan when you move the combine from field to field is the combine low enough to go under stop light or do you have to go around them?
Very rare to have stop lights in a rural area.
We don't have the headache of worrying about stop lights thankfully. Nearest one is about 7 miles away
alfalfa for beef cattle?
6"?? Jeez, you are really putting it down! But you know what you are doing, and know what rate you have to apply. Hope you put some Boron on the Alfalfa!👍👍
What a waste of good cropland where those solar panels are
i love how the music fits the action 09:36 🤙🤙🤙
See them spreaders all the time it's cool see how they actually work n such
Your P and K levels must have been very high initially if I heard correctly that no fertilizer had been applied in 4 years. I'm not familiar with your soils, but we would have little productivity .

Saw this on the national news the other day: Beer saves Potosi. Did they really, and is it any good?

This is probably obvious to you but I'm not a farmer... will your smashed down tire tracks "pop back up" in a couple of days or will it be like, to quote you, be Iron Poisoning LOL ?
Earlier is better to spread for this reason. I did kill some on the end rows where I turned but otherwise the tracks are disappearing.
that solar farm is butt ugly what a waste
