Also the police and ambulance drivers always drive with their lights on. Unless you hear a siren - you don’t need to pull over. We learned that our first time driving in CR 😊

Costa Rica has a terrible reputation when it comes to driving but to be honest, I have not found it any different in terms of aggressive driving compared to the Boston, MA area and the need to be aware of motorcyclist lane-splitting in California. I've lived long times in both places and found the complaints re: Costa Rica to be WAY over blow.

I was surprised by the way people drive, mostly the passing! My husband is a good driver though , and he adapted well. Its a good reason to take a cab or hire a driver if you are not a experienced driver. That being said we never saw any accidents, just a couple stalled cars. People are very safe about dogs and wildlife crossing and we noticed they always slow down and honk.

GM , in our area they pass on corners and double yellow lines , Cows are walking down the middle of the road , along with goats , sheep etc . People stop in middle of road to just chat with someone. Haha 😄all in a day of living here where we are . Pot holes and water running over our roads , bridges that are really scary lol 😆 BUT it's something we just got use to and except because the Pros out win the cons . And I found when it rains on our dirt roads THATS another story lol 😆. We love living here NO MATTER WHAT. THANKS for sharing. Pura Vida. Yes to everything you said. Lol 😆

Thank you for this video. Oh dear, yes, the driving in CR 🤣...saw potholes as big as a bath tub. And drove upwards to volcan Barva. Worst "road" ever driven. Looked like a dried up river bed. Huge stones in the middle of the road to pass! And it took hours to get there, even though we used a 4x4 of course😁🙈. And the fact that people simply just stopped and had a chat with a friend or neighbour...and all the other cars had to pass left or right...hilarious😎🙈😁

I'm visiting in Costa Rica right now and driving can be terrifying! My mom has been doing all the driving - tapping into her past driving the crazy streets of NY. The people on the side of the road chatting thing is the craziest to me. I saw to people on motorcycles just barely pulled off the road (at a curve mind you) chatting like they were simply in the middle of a store or something. Wild!

Many great tips in this video! And the humidity is fantastic for your skin but does tend to make the dirt roads muddy. Thanks Sara.

One thing that you may not be considering is that there are some of us who have lived/driven in Central America in the past. If you are one of these people, driving in Costa Rica is no worse than driving in Panamá, Mexico or other countries in Latin America.

We made the mistake of flying into San Jose, and then waiting 2 hours (pick up rental, eat) to drive to Dominical. Thankfully, no accidents, but it was dark much of the time due to early sunset and it was raining. Folks SITTING and walking on the side of road were the biggest issue. White knuckle all the way.

Can't be much different than driving in Louisiana and Mississippi or the Hana Highway in Maui.

Don’t forget about the giant ditches on the sides of the road, haha. I was in CR for the first time last month and drove from SJ to Playa Hermosa at night and during a storm and it was pretty scary. I lived in Venezuela until I was 21 so I had to snap into that driving mode 😅 oh, did I mention that the windshield wipers weren’t wiping correctly? 🙈

WOW Toni!! You are brave!! haha . I would not have recommended this drive to someone driving in CR for the first time. Happy to hear you made it safely !

Great Job!! Thank You… :-) Do they still use tires (like traffic cones) to mark dangers in the roads?

    Hi,
I’ve read about people getting arrested and jailed after being involved in minor car accidents/fender benders. Is this common?

@@SarahElenaDesignsLife Hey lady, if you just deny constructive criticism then how are you going to learn to improve? While it is true that you show footage of the roads, it is only 10% of the video!
