This comment is important as it indicates what it was to be a SW fan pre-2000
Although I enjoy these videos, they do lack the viewpoint of those playing in the 90s - it was MIND BLOWING flying down the DS trench, flying a YT1300, dressing as a stormtrooper....the flaws were forgiven for the unique experience they offered that is so different to the 30 years of media and now a stream of content we have.

I think of Rebel Assault II as a ‘blockbuster’ title. You play it not for the gameplay, nor the story-you play it, because you wanna feel like a derring do, stealing a stealth fighter from the midst of an enemy fortress, while blasting it to oblivion. And on that metric, the game is a 10/10.
Moreover, I believe it recreates the appeal of the original trilogy so well. The OT has always been an emotional spectacle, with style, plucky characters, stunning visuals and great music above all else. Rebel Assault II is all of these things, without trying to accomplish anything beyond that, and in a way that makes it stand out. I’ve always loved the design of these interiors on board the Star Destroyer. I’d argue in places it looks even better than the original Star Wars (the whole docking area during the escape level is especially memorable).

These games were mind blowing in a lot of the ways for the time, and were definitely meant to be played with a good joystick. They’re clunky today, sure, but they have their place in PC history.

Rebel Assault II blew my mind as a kid! I would say that it's worth playing for any Star Wars fan today just for the fact that the developers filmed their own Star Wars movie using actual original trilogy props and costumes from Lucasfilm (which at that point would have just been sitting there for over a decade). Back when Star Wars was just 3 movies and some books and comics, something like this was very, VERY special.

I love your retro reviews, specially these old Star Wars games because I played all of them when I was a kid. I appreciate that you go through the entire game and keep in mind from their release time and how they old today.
Also on Rebel assault 2, I used to have the PC version but as you pointed out the PS1 version is different because the space battles (which is most of the game) where made by factor 5 (yes the guys from rogue squadron). So because they targeted the PS1 hardware were 3D started to rise there, they decided to redo the space battles with full 3D models and you could switch from in game cockpit view or exterior view, it was quite cool.
Back in the day, ports on different plats were more like full conversation with different feelings or materials depending of the hardware limitation and sometime a game could feel really different. RA2 was really a great game and story imo.
    Anyway great review as usual!

We could never beat it so I hon our own, which was fine since we loved that first level with the B-wing, so I had to get my brother to finish it for me. Ah man, Rebel assault! Loved these games growing up.
You are exactly right regarding the nerds making their own star wars movies, the dev teams basically won the lottery at the time and absolutely went full send on making their own star wars content with costumes and such that they ended up making themselves or were able to borrow from Lucasfilms Games and for many it was the first proper EU Star Wars content many got, you are exactly right about the dogwater controls for the first game, that was a major complaint at the time and even the devs admitted on the old BBS/forums that they should have spent more time fixing them (which they were on the console releases as they got a second chance to fix a lot of things as you experienced), Also made worse is that for a lot of these controls they were designed with the old giant joysticks you could buy back in the day, the same joysticks that used to cost as much as a new component of somekind for your PC!
I got them both back in the day which included the ANCIENT floppy disk version of Rebel Assault 1 with the pack as the old game shop i used to visit here in western sydney (hi-tech world if anyone remembers them) was desperate to clear out old floppy game stock and i got given the floppy disk edition for free with both CD releases of Rebel Assault. And like with many games like this back in the day, dev team members played roles of somekind in those FMVs either as characters or extras as it was cheaper to just put on the costume and do a few hours of filming rather then hire people outside the studio.
    Good times!

In 1993, it was kind of a 3-way race between X-Wing, the Super Star Wars games, and Rebel Assault. Each series got a lot of love from people at the time. I still remember playing the first Rebel Assault with my friend in my kitchen. He had the game, and we had a lot of fun playing it. X-Wing was kind of the dark horse between the three. It was my favorite, but I was afraid it was too technical to compete. I feared Rebel Assault or the Super Star Wars games were just so bombastic that they would outlive my favorite of the three, X-Wing. Somehow, the X-Wing series is the one that got the most iterations, though. But by now, they're all largely long forgotten.
The Rebel Assault games were designed to be played with a joystick. A lot of PC games were controlled with joysticks back then, even if it didn't make sense. The first game does control a little bit better with a joystick, but it's still pretty bad. The second game holds up a lot better. I'm glad the PSX version looks better-balanced, but I think the 3D models aged worse than the pre-rendered sprites of the original. Glad you had fun with the second game. When I look at the on-foot sections of the Rebel Assault games, though... it just makes me think that a full Time Crisis light gun+pedal setup would have been amazing. Of course, pedals weren't used in light gun games yet, but secondary buttons on light guns weren't too crazy. I wonder if that's something they considered, since the game plays so much like an arcade game already...

wow man, I'll never forget the ton of hours I spent as a child trying to drive those crazy ships in Rebel Assault 1 with a Quickshot 80's joystick, it was possible, but hard as flying a real plane. Forced you to play totally focused on making your hand move in milimeters, it was easier for me to learn to fly a cheap mini drone.
Quite challenging but an enjoyable one if a SW fan, for the times of 2d games, playing this, as a real new Star Wars movie with real sounds voices and graphics, shooting all the shit riding your Tie, it blow my mind for a while, loved it like a 4th mini-movie. Thanks for the vid

I played both games back in the mid-1990s. Playing the “Millenium Falcon” stage in Rebel Assault 2 is actually quite easy if you change the controls from mouse to keyboard (then you have to revert it back for the other point and click stages). I don’t understand LucasArts from this time period. They were making games with live action scenes, but never considering bringing Mark Hamill to replay Luke Skywalker, even though he was essentially doing that in contemporary Wing Commander games. What a wasted opportunity!
P.S.: These second game and Dark Forces II should be remade with modern technology and HD cut scenes.

Yup, I'm old enough to have bought and played both the PC and Playstation versions when they came out. I think I played the 1st one on the 3DO, but believe it or not, it wasn't the worst thing in the world for its time, and there was NO new Star Wars anywhere on the horizon at the time, so it slightly scratched that itch.
The second one came out right after I bought my first actual PC, and I still remember booting it up. There was a screen that came up after testing your system, and it would display either a frown face for the systems that weren't good, a mid face for systems that were okay, and a smiley face for systems that were good. I was thrilled to have all smiley faces.
I was such a Star Wars geek that I ended up re-buying it for the Playstation when that version arrived, and I can remember playing it for my friends while they watched it like a movie. I had surround sound and everything. It was pretty fun, and controlled better than the PC version, as you mentioned.
    Fun vid.

While this isn't a good game, I used to be able to beat it without dying, so I do have some tips for the controls. 1) It was much easier to control when I got a decent joystick... It became a *lot* easier when I bought a CH Flightstick Pro from the cheap Suncom stick I used when I first got the game... However, I imagine a lot of you would be running on DOSBox and using a recent joystick and those probably ought to be pretty good, especially by 1990s standards. 2) Instead of squeezing the stick, use light fingertip pressure to control your ship, this will help prevent over-steering it into various obstacles and make hitting targets easier.

The plot is more just an excuse to visit places from the movies and some of the books. It is also the final game in the Dark Forces series so the furthest point in time we see Kyle Katarn. I never played RA2 but I remember RA1 feeling like a preview in 1993 of what Star Wars games could look like in the future once hardware caught up. We knew back then that at some point a game like this could "come off the rails" and no longer be pre-rendered and heavily script.
Two years later, I really felt like we had arrived when Dark Forces was released in 1995 and you could finally really get yourself fully immersed into these new worlds.
The kids won't ever understand the progression that us 80s babies grew up with between the 1980s and some point around 2010 where hardware was no longer a limiting factor in the kinds of games you could make. It was an exciting time to grow up as a gamer. Always something new to look forward to every year.
I don't even know what there's is to look forward to in gaming these days. Slightly better visuals? 8k resolution instead of 4k resolution? The 84th installment of Call of Duty?

@stormthrush37 agreed, I loved RA2, played it multiple times, trying to get the highest scores possible, and loved the FMV, made it feel like I was in the universe. Years later, I got the 1st game on PC and was very disappointed after a few levels. I ended up giving up trying to make it work and watched a let's play.

I got both in a collection of Star Wars PC games 25 years ago. The first one was so bad because of the difficulty level and controls that I found it utterly unplayable and just gave up. Part 2 however was great and I recommend it, with the exception of the speeder bike and Falcon leveks which give me flashbacks just seeing them though thankfully you can skip them with the codes you get after beating each level (and you can look up the list online). Albeit as mentioned the game is very short and its more like an interactive cutscene with the length of the playable parts relative to the total length of the game. Overall the game felt felt very for if not ahead of its time.

Older folks call it an At-At (rather then AyTee-AyTee) because one of the toy commercials back in the early 80s referred to it that way. I'm older than you are but young enough to have not had any of the vintage Star Wars toys or see the commercials so I didn't experience that. I agree that AyTee-AyTee makes more sense based on AT-ST and other variants.

If you haven't had the pleasure, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter is a gem from the 90s.
It's been ages, but it was a favorite of my brother and I when we were little.
Also different franchise altogether, but Star Trek : Starfleet academy is a 5 disc behemoth from that era too.
One of my all-tjme favorites. If you like that era's corny dialogue and film style, you'll love the cutscenes.

The 2 second comment about AT-AT's got me to subscribe, it's such a pet peeve of mine, What would they call the Construction unit AT-CT attssett? and how would they differentiate that from the AT-ST? or the MT-ST? emmmtsssttt? No.. they call it a bug walker because it has six legs while moving 100 mph while scaling mountains... horrifying... You know.. back when Starwars had creative and passionate people behind it.

Although I don’t mind the A-T-A-T pronunciation, you can’t really argue that “At-At” (@ @) is wrong. NASA isn’t commonly pronounced N-A-S-A. Even CSPAN and IHOP are pronounced with as much of a word sound as possible. In the case of AT-ST, I can’t think of an established English acronym in which the “wordiest” part comes before the unpronounceable letter or letters.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the Mystery Science Theater cheat code for Rebel Assault 2. If you used it, the cutscenes would be displayed with what appeared to be R2, 3PO, and Vader in the movie theater, the dialogue would be cut, and there would be humorous subtitles as well as a few funny changes to the videos. That is what I most remember about this one.

I’m older unfortunately (born 85) and I had RA1 when it came out on the PC. Totally agree about the controls, I had an old quick shot controller and that was the only way in could make it though. I did eventually beat it without cheats, but honestly I was stuck on the hoth probe droid cave for like a year. I would just use the password system and play the star destroyer attack in the early game over and over as I really liked that level.

  • @billcarson6954

Had both as a kid. I NEVER knew RA1 had Hoth stages 😂. This is my first time seeing them! Back then my brother and I failed so much on the very first “training” mission. We forced our way through, only to find the next stages were stupid easy compared to the first. Then we never passed the A-Wing canyon lol.

I love looking back at older Star Wars games because of the charm of the older graphics and cheesiness that had the true spirit of Star Wars. Why do so many modern games with the impressive graphics seem so boring and lackluster? It's because the spirit of which something is made is the most important factor. Back in the day, these were AAA graphics. Today's graphics are going to be looked down upon in the future when graphics are more superior, but the most important question is with what spirit were the games created from? Great video.

The main issue with the first game's controls are the lack of autofire and the fact that it assumes a decent joystick as a control device, the way the crosshair snaps to center works much better with a stick.
The canyon runs just require a light touch which I can imagine being extremely difficult with a gamepad.

I remember the controls for the flying portions of the first rebel assault being particularly terrible. It was very difficult to accurately aim at the little targets and even more difficult to tell where the walls of the various canyons you always seemed to end up flying down actually were until you crashed into them. I also remember that obnoxious on-foot mission would actually kill you instantly if you picked the wrong path to walk down - rookie one would walk into a control room completely full of storm troopers and that was the end. I don't think there was any in-game warning not to go down that path either.
As far as star wars games from that era went, I much preferred x-wing and tie fighter, which the idiots at my school insulted me for liking because "the graphics in rebel assault were better". They couldn't look past the low-detail polygons of the time.

I was able to get Rebel Assault 2 on clearance around 2008-2010 for 9 bucks at Best Buy [basically they had a section for all unsold PS1 era games and I knew I had to grab it at that price because I was used to always buying games around 30 bucks back then]. One of my best cheaper game pick ups ever.
I loved the heck out of RA2, the story was both fresh and familiar enough to come back to and see how it would fit in with the expanded universe. Back then, stuff that wasn't canon was okay to me as long as it came out and said it straightforward.
I was hoping for a remake or even a continuation of this story for many years after, I mean, it has solid structure and it would be interesting to see how different the story would be if the Rebels could figure out ways to win against the Empire outside of Luke. Like what if the Empire had a homing beacon on the ship and the next game starts with them trying to escape an ambush and what little data they had on the new TIE fighters.
Also, I love FMV in games, and this game was one of those first ones I ever played.

Thanks for the honest reviews. You brought back memories of how awesome parts of the original game were (like the Battle of Hoth and Death Star trench run) and how annoying other parts were (like the ground combat, caves, canyons, etc.). The gameplay was awful, as you said, but it was still so cool to have such a cinematic-looking Star Wars game (and, really, such a cinematic-looking game of any kind, since CD-ROM was very new and Rebel Assault was one of the first to take real advantage of it and release only on CD-ROM). In 1993, it had been 10 years since RotJ and we were very hungry for more Star Wars. So, it wasn't a good game, but it was a cool experience at the time. It's not one that I care to re-experience, though, not after you reminded me of all of its faults. 😆

Yes, this is nostalgia speaking... but Rebel Assault was AMAZING back in its day. We had never seen graphics like that, not in 1993. Clips straight from the movies. Voice acting all the way through. It was revolutionary. Yes, controls could be fiddly (it was intended to be played with a joystick, not a mouse or controller) and it wasn't very long, but that didn't matter. It was Star Wars like we had never played it before.
Rebel Assault, along with Myst and 7th Guest was a CD-ROM killer application. People bought CD drives just to play these games.
Oh, and as far as I know at least Revel Assault II is Legends Canon.

Rebel Assault needs to be played with a joystick. And by that I mean a joystick that mounts to a desk and has a trigger and a few buttons. I can’t imagine playing that one with a controller. That said, it was tough as crap even with a period accurate joystick when I was playing it in 1994.

    I remember that game.
Keep in mind, before Shadows of the Empire, 3D games looked really bad.
Same with Rebel Assault I. Everybody wanted to play Star Wars as a video game in the 90s and this game made it possible and looked 100 times better than any game made before.
And no it did not look worse than the movies. TV screens had 480p.
