#6 piston skirt broke on my 4.SLO and I did a short rebuild with new pistons, honed the cylinders with a ball hone, rod bearings, gaskets, oil pump, and good to go
yeah - definitely want to see the inframe rebuild in your driveway - pretty much the same situation here - wrenching beside the street - so your video would be very much appreciated and helpful !
im so excited to see you do a 4.0 in-frame rebuild that i just subscribed to your channel to show my gratitude. i cant wait to see the outcome. i like your content and also have to do this same project
My noise everyone said was lifter tick , after a top end rebuild , tick was still present , after another 20k miles on the road ,the tick turned into a tap and i now have a broken piston skirt. Motors disassembled again. And measuring my cylinder bores today i hope i dont have to have it bored
So sorry to hear (literally) that your motor is gone! But I would be very happy if you would take us along on your rebuild. Lots of rebuild videos out there, but you always have good advice and put a common man's twist to what you do. I know it's a lot of extra work letting us tag along with you, but I would sure love to see it. Take care Ronnie!
So even if my engine is blown I can still rebuild it ? What are the chances there permanent damage to the block it self even if there no holes in the block ?
Definitely want to see a competent up to date rebuild with currently available parts. My cherokees got 230000 on a presumably original motor so ive been waiting for the day. It definitely knocks gently at all times and it isnt any of the usual things so im assuming its a piston slapping and eventually itll slap itself apart.
I have a 2002 grand Cherokee, 4.0 mine just started last week, was running fine until then.im not planning on putting money into it, but I agree, before I drop the pan, makes the Same sound
Just finished rod bearings replacement. Sure made a big difference. Top of rod bearings were worn to the brass. Compression and power cycle pressure side of bearings. Motor has 200k+ and slight piston slap when cold. Gonna need to replace them sometime. Would definitely appreciate your "tag along" video.👍
Can’t wait to watch you rebuild this, one of my XJ’s I use for off road only is low compression on #1… 295k but still running. One day it’ll get a refresh
Olá amigo, sou do Brasil acompanho seu canal tenho um jeep cherokee sport 4.0L 1997 ,seus vídeos me ajudou a resolver alguns problemas em meu jeep muito obrigado 👍
That opening noise demo sounded like flex plate bolts to me. Piston slap sounds like bearing/rod knock. Piston slap goes away when you have the gas pedal engaged. It is audible at idle wheneverything is slack.
this is very common from the lack of zinc from a engine built to have zinc in the oil. catalytic converters dont like zinc minute amounts burn them up. zinc strengthens steel period. old school jeeps would do everything but spit a piston out.
My 99 WJ 4.0 has a pecking noise that's driving me insane. Idk if it's head, or piston slap. I do know after 5000 miles it's still full of oil so it must not be something too serious.
Just finished the timing chain and nope still knocking. Oil pressure still above 40 psi and has good power. Also checked valves, they are tight. Just knocking some at idle. Thinking rod bearings or pistons now.
Looking forward on your Rebuild Video. My 2001 Jeep XJ just developed the same noice. I haven’t dropped the pan Yet but I’m almost sure it’s piston Slap
Mine is slapping a bit.. when i first start it up no noise but once it gets warm it starts slapping with a little of accelerating. There is an oil leak at the bottom when the engine is running. My guess, is it def needs an oil change and a pil pan gasket??? The oil is dark
recently also have this infamous ticking noise - no flexplate issue - you can hear the ticking at the tail pipe - hopefully an exhaust leak - or a piston slap - your thoughts ?
Just bought a 95 today. I missed driving these basters. I had 96 that was tough as nail. But wasn't 4x4 like this one. Anywho driving it home I noticed there a light knocking notice from the drain pan. Any clue?
Man mine just started making the same noise lol. I'll be pulling the valve cover this weekend but pretty much know it needs a rebuild or new motor. I suspect the cam is worn or broken piston. Mine happened on startup. 50psi oil pressure at idle and no misfire
Mine used to knock on cold starts but eventually go away when warmed up. Last night it didn’t go away at all but if I rev it the sound goes away and I don’t feel any loss of power. If it was something internal in the engine that’s about to fail would the sound go away if I rev it? I’m afraid to drive it now because it definitely sounds like a knock.
What did your oil pressure look like when the knocking started? Mine has a very similar knock but the oil pressure is fine. Checked flex plate bolts and they're all good and snug. Have yet to drop the pan. Just curious.
Hey Ronnie, I got a 99 XJ. 2 inch lift. I bought it a couple months ago. I just replaced all my steering components, upper control arms, and bushings on the axle. Shocks, etc…. And it feels like a train going over bumps! Not forgiving at all. I had another 99 XJ with a 3 inch lift and it was a smooth ride. Anything I can do? Slams so hard it jars the steering wheel. The reason I replaced all this stuff was because I have steering wander I can’t get rid off. I also have new tires on as well.
My 99 WJ Limited started making the same noise, only 125k miles. I removed the valve cover and is full of sludge, previous owner rarely changed the oil. Its not the flexplate, I tightened all the bolts. I will be rebuilding the engine. I want to grab a 3.8 supercharger from the pull a part, off of gm 3.8l V6s. Do you know anything about installing these superchargers on a 4.0?
Mine has done the same thing as yours ,I'm a descent mechanic not a tech, and I would really appreciate any help or ideas, short cuts you might know I'm disabled limited budget it's my only source of transportation,I do thank you for any help, I'm working with limited tools Ajack two stands and having to lift and pull by hand so please send any help you can again tbank you
mine started making a similar noise probably 2weeks ago now, debating on an emergency engine swap (the jeep is in the process of being replaced once the new one is complete, however it's the only vehicle I pull my trailer with and have some scrap loaded up ready for dump) or just letting it rock, what do you think the time frame could be before it fully let's go?
This may be an old video but my 97 tj is making a similar noise.. and sounds a lot like piston slap.. I pulled the pan but found nothing in the pan indicating pieces that have come apart… pan was clean.. so why is my 97k mile tj already have piston slap?! This thing was owned by my grandparents… and it’s got slap? I mean it’s been maintained it’s whole life.. just frustrating how garbage these 4.0 engines are compared to others.. and yet Jeep people swear by them… they’re loud, slow, and inefficient.. :/

I got no engine sound I'd like to send u a video of it running so maybe u could tell me if it savable it sounds like a machine gun
Only way to tell is to tear it down and see if there is damage on the cylinders walls that tells you if you can rebuild a engine or not
Had two Cherokees that had the same problem with number 5 piston
Definitely want to see a competent up to date rebuild with currently available parts. My cherokees got 230000 on a presumably original motor so ive been waiting for the day. It definitely knocks gently at all times and it isnt any of the usual things so im assuming its a piston slapping and eventually itll slap itself apart.
Mine has had a similar noise for about 30k miles and hasn't gotten much worse. It's at 272k now
Yes please detail the process as well as you can on an in frame rebuild
Yes 👍🏻 we want to see the rebuilt!
I have a 2002 grand Cherokee, 4.0 mine just started last week, was running fine until then.im not planning on putting money into it, but I agree, before I drop the pan, makes the Same sound
Shade tree mechanic rebuild. Let's see it please

Would love to see you rebuild it
THANKS for the list / info - as well!

That’s great to hear because I was over here contemplating selling my rig over this video.

Yes I would like to see the rebuild process
I'd love to see the doc on it man. thanks
Seems like a good time to build a stroker.
Let’s see the rebuild please
I had number 3 piston break luckily I had another engine with 30 over pistons to rebuild mine
Definitely want to see the build
I would like to see you rebuild it

I got an 01 wj. Makeing a tic at idle, goes away when on load. Thinking its my timig chain. 240k
@@vanillagerrilla7356 that’s how mine was in the beginning.

Which tail lights are thems
Video coming out on them soon

Did you do the in frame fix is the video on here
I would definitely like to see that
Hell yes I want to see the rebuild on detail with explication
Same problem here was hoping it was a lifter till i removed the oil pan.

Been waiting on this update 💅

Caster is out
I’m in the same situation plz do a rebuild video
Also noticed he might have put to much oil if that helps
Let's see that rebuild
2:45 don't drink so much!
Of course we want to see you do and then frame on it.
Bring it my 96 xj has 250k and who knows when I will need to do this job!

W.V sure looks like western N.C. anyway did you also notice any gas in the oil?

Definitely would love to see you rebuild that 4.0 Sucks it happened but at least you should make some content money off of UA-cam.
😎👍🤘🔥💯

I wouldn’t chance it mine was about to fly apart
I want to see
Everytime I find and fix a noise on my XJ a day later 2 new noises start.
I want to see it
Rebuild it
Well atleast you didn't run this one through the water hole.😁😁 That sucks though....

Please video it
My noise was an explosion, turns out you cant run a car on methanol mixed with gunpowder
Oh no :/
it could have been worse.
Do it
I feel like this should have been the intro to a video where you actually talk about and show how to do the stuff you say in the description
First!!
