Hi Sammy. I’m 65 years old. I watched the first astronaut launches on TV as a young boy and played astronaut with my sister and friends. I always smile when I see you, almost young enough to be my grandchild, wearing a NASA logo hoodie. I enjoyed this song. Keep them coming.
Thanks you so much. This clip is still one of my favourite covers on youtube. I come back and watch it every few months and whenever start feeling sentimental about my Irish heritage.
Sammy! The mysteries of youtube algorithms popped you up last night when I did a search for Arthur McBride. My first acquaintance with Arthur Mc Bride was with Paul Brady’s performance of it some 15 years ago or more. An iconic performance! Persuasive. Completely engaging. Nuanced. I listen to it from time to time over all those years. And now this Arthur McBride from you! Good heavens, Sammy! Your insight into it is utterly original and brilliant. There is something of sweetness that you give it, a light touch of good humor. Devoid of sarcasm, devoid of anger. So uplifting. So refreshing. What accounts for it? I think it simply comes deeply from who you are in heart, spirit, and soul. Your choice of guitar - the soft voice of nylon strings. Your hand - firm yet soft on the strings. Your demeanor of relaxed good cheer. Watching you sing and play such a part of the pleasure.
I speak little English and understand a few words you sing, but your every word enters me as if you were speaking to my soul. I love your voice, greetings from Tuscany ITALY
I have been listening to Bradys original for some decades now ! Yours is truly a wonderful rendition and it sounds great on a nylon string and I love how clear the lyrics are also !!!Thanks for posting!
Aww, what brilliant tone control, how well fretted and what a lovely chord progression. :) ... Aww, what a sweet song, and such charming accent :) ... ah... Actually pretty challenging subject matter for sure... Certainly an experience that's keeps you on your toes. Great stuff.
Stumbled across this cover and cannot verbalise just how beautiful it is. It’s always been a bittersweet song to listen to for reasons I’ll not explain, but hearing it again in a new way is utterly gorgeous! Catch me humming it 24/7 for the next calendar year and the rest
A month ago I was in the middle of an internship which completely stressed me out. I then played this video on repeat to calm my nerves, and it's worked ever since. Thank you for doing what you do, because whatever you do, it's more than what you think you're doing! :)
Well done Sammy! Iconic song that I haven't heard covered well by anyone other than the great Paul Brady. Great rendition, and fair play on the guitar tabs too - definitely not easy!
my family and i used to listen to irish folk music on road trips. i have never been to ireland but i am very irish. it’s my dream to go there. never heard this song before but it’s so nostalgic. thank you very much for my new song i will play every time i wake up and lay in bed at night. no joke 😂 love you sammy 💖
Paul Brady 1975 live version is the definitive version. She does a nice job though. His two other hits were Crazy Dreams (jools Holland version is best) and an anti troubles song The Island - hidden Gems
How beautifully done. Such a great job to see you alternate between extreme concentration on the arrangement and big smiles because you know you nailed a piece of music that’s delightful when its done right. Fantastically performed.
man your efforts and the BIG improvement in your playing are absolutley noticeable and outstanding!! i've always liked the unique sound of your guitar playing, but here it's really something else. i'm glad to read you're proud of this cover because it's just so good. i hope to hear you jumping into more songs like this one! exciting!!
Just watched this - the most heartfelt and beautiful cover of this IMMENSE song I've ever heard. Your reaction at the end sealed it too. Don't ever doubt yourself or stop, please.
Sometimes I feel like everything is the world literally annoys me. The only thing that can save me is music. It makes me feel safe and it's like a hug. I wish there were more music like this. Tysm Sammy..😃
So wonderful to meet you today! It's only appropriate I comment on here as it's my fave song that you cover, so impeccably clean all in one take! Hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did.
Not everyone can be a delightful balladeer, but you certainly obtained that distinction. Beautiful job with a beautiful song. One of those that everyone thinks he can sing successfully, until he tries and finds that you cannot sing it if you don't have magic.
OMG! 🥰You are utterly adorable, a beautiful spirit, sweet lovely voice, and did Paul's guitar arrangement of this stunning tune justice. You had me smiling and tearing up all the way through the song. Just accidentally stumbled across this in my feed today because I had decided to learn to play the song yesterday. I got the basic bones down but I'll be copping the licks in your video to flesh it out. I look forward to watching more of your material. 3 years on, I'm very curious to see what you're up to now. Thank you for the wonderful surprise you gave me this Sunday afternoon. ❤
The fact that they have the courage to record them self singing and posting it on the internet it’s astounding.. you have a lovely voice Sammy. Keep up the good work!
sammy. thank you. today i realized my older brother never actually cared for me. i know i constantly say thank you for you posting, but i really do mean it. thank you, sammy.
I'm afraid you are mistaken, my friend: It was absolutely perfect. Flawless? maybe, maybe not; who cares? But it was EXACTLY what I needed at EXACTLY the moment I didn't even know I needed it. This came up in the *suggested for you* column on the right. I now have a huge smile in my heart that is taking over my face, and I thank you!
This has been one of my most favorite songs forever. I stumbled into this today, and I have to say, you played this perfectly. Your voice is clear, and true, and "connected" to the song itself. No show-boating. This is the best version (besides the Paul's himself) that I've ever heard. Well done Sammy ! Amazing that you tackled this song. It's not easy. I heard somewhere that Paul tried to teach Bob Dylan to play it, and Bob gave up. haha. Well done!
Hi Mary Lou - I was enjoying this song and noticed your comment. Just wanted to mention I saw you open for Shawn Colvin in Copley Square in ‘91 or ‘92. Lights Are Changing made it to many of my mixtapes!
@@ray26a Thank you!! Also, I shared this song with Paul Brady, and he shared it on his page!! I met him a couple years ago in Beverly mass at a Theater and he was great. He must have loved Sammy's version here...Hope all is well Ray26a!
How did you know that I'm obsessed with this song? It's the storied folk songs that have been tugging at my heart these days - thanks for your beautiful cover
It's crazy that you're not confident in your guitar abilities while playing this good. I guess one can be insecure at any level. Just know we enjoy your playing so much!! P.S.: Ignore my profile picture I am not good at guitar at all, just love them very much.
I personally believe this is one of the best songs written in human history. My bias for Celtic music aside, I just think it's one of of the most perfectly written, clever, and spirited ballads ever created. That said, It is not an easy one to cover. Standing between 6 and 8 minutes, with so many words, some of them very specific to the period... it's very tough to pull off and make it interesting and accessible to people (which I gather you're pretty aware of considering your sigh at the end😂). This cover was amazing. Your voice is perfectly expressive and controlled and I really thoroughly enjoyed listening to the entire thing. New fan ✌️😇
I briefly tried to translate this song into russian before I realized it was beyond me. I think it is a powerful message of self determination and self defense that is timeless and meaningful today. Слава Україні
I'm back here again. It feels like a remembrance of Christmases past, but also this tune just carries so much nostalgia and feeling. Well sung and well played, Sammy!
absolutely beautiful version of this song, been listening to the Paul Brady version for years but yours is a stunningly touching version. i love it. fabulous
That is so good. I have goosebumps. Guitar and vocals are sublime. Paul would be proud. You should be proud. Absolutely stellar, possibly my new favorite version (sorry Paul)
Also if your view count jumps by 300 tonight that's probably me and while I'm on the subject who are the 2 people that disliked this? - I will make sausages from their entrails.

I love everything about this. The playing ,the singing, the song. It will be stuck in my head for weeks now. I love the Planxty version as well but this is so good and charming
Brilliant! I think the almost-American is understandable. I hail from the US but lived in Scotland for 6 years. My relatives here still remark there's a twinge of the accent I acquired whilst living abroad. Great job. I've been wanting to learn that on guitar for a while. I'm most inspired now!
I love the way the guitar is partially cut off when the musician is playing. It's so enjoyable to see a person playing a musical instrument when you can't see the person playing the musical instrument.
Outstanding. I heard this song many years ago and only just remembered what it was, and after finding it, found your cover here. Incredible voice and excellent guitar playing!
