- Our sweet corn has started forming tassels way sooner than expected. Does this mean we'll have a poor corn harvest? What could have caused this?

My peaches and cream is doing the same thing. Came up the beginning of May and started tasseling a few days ago at 4ft tall while being a nice healthy dark green color. It’s been very hot and dry the past few weeks so that probably caused it.
Weigh your truck and trailer at a truck scale, then put the pumpkin on trailer and weigh again. Do the truck/trailer/pumpkin math to figure weight of pumpkin 🎃 🎉🌞
That would work, although I was kind of wanting a photo of it on the scale.
I planted early sunglow this year and it finished out at 4 1/2 feet. I was afraid it was the heat as well but apparently that's the norm for that variety. It had full juicy ears and we roasted some on the grill today

Thanks for taking the time to make this. Last year my corn in a 4x4' raised bed did pretty good. This year the corn seems stunted and unfortunately, the plants did suffer some sort of varmint trauma. They're now around 3-4' high and already have tassles. I'll see what happens and salvage what I can. Then I'll plant a cover crop in late summer like vetch or red clover, etc... try to rehabilitate the soil.

Thanks for the information. As always good stuff. FYI our P&C started to tassel about waist high. Like you I think it was caused by cold weather after it germinated. I poured the nitrogen to it and we had about 5days of rain. Now it is over 8 feet. Will be harvesting in about two weeks.

we had 3 100+ days in Missouri last week and looking at 3 days this week i HOPE it is not the heat, I have found that nitrogen is a major factor in the corn small plant that tassel early are just like "growing conditions critical, save the children" and make tiny ears to try and have another generation. I have been following you for corn advice so hoping to get a good harvest this year :)

We just planted our corn a couple days ago I'm late but it'll grow
My silver queen is just beginning to tussle at around 6 feet or maybe a little more. The peaches and cream is funny, some is over 6 and some nit so much, as it is fully tasseled. I think when it was so hot the amount of water and available nitrogen, but mostly water affects the height.
I enjoyed the video! I think the variety makes some difference, the up & down crazy weather, & nutrients in the soil also... Sweet corn will continue to grow even after tasseling, well in my experience it has. I have thought it was starting too early several times, but it keeps growing & turns out well!
I haven't gotten that hungry yet. lol

I started my corn around the April 1. I have Peaches and Cream and Early Bantam corn growing. The P&C is the same size as your solstice and just started silking today. It actually blew over in a storm last weed but it’s a small patch so I was able to prop it back up.

Much of it was completely laid over. It’s only about a 5 by 10 plot so I used poles and boards to stand it up.

Trav, we are in the heart of Texas. My corn was shorter than normal. It’s been very dry and above avg temps here as well. I believe that we have have a higher number of heat units for this time of the year. I’ve noticed that even the field corn and the silage corn is a little shorter than normal.
Increased heat units is likely the culprit. This corn variety is listed for a 70 day maturity, but ours is going to be closer to 55-60 days.
@@LazyDogFarm I'm in the Kansas City Missouri area. I'm growing Miracle sweet corn. My experience with it before was that it got between 6 and 1/2 and 7 ft tall. This time it tassled when it was only in the ground A month and a half, at only 4 ft. I fed it very well in the beginning with blood meal and a 10-10-10 fertilizer. I've been side dressing it with 46-0-0 urea. It's been terribly hot here as well. I did Google to see if heat stress could cause this. And that is correct. Heat stress CAN do this to corn. I didn't get my corn in until the 12th of July. I have friend who farms corn and wheat in Illinois. I asked him about it, and he told me that heat stress can do this to corn. I have ears out there, but I don't think they're going to be very big. But if I get any I'll be real happy, because last year I had the most beautiful corn you ever saw! And I didn't know my next door neighbor had a rat issue! They ate about 100 ears of corn on me! I have never seen anything like it in my life! Hopefully this rat issue is resolved because I took care of it myself with an exterminator, traps and homemade rat killers. I also bought powder that sterilizes the females. That corn looks really healthy! I'm sure you'll get a good crop from it!
Believe me, if I got decent corn last year, you will. It rained what seemed like 4 days a week for the better part of the spring last year, hard rain at that and every time I fertilized my corn it rained hard and washed it through. Needless to say the corn was short and I didnt think I would get much but to my surprise, it turned out fairly decent. I'm sure your corn will be fine.
The ears have really grown since we filmed this video a week ago, so I think we're in for a treat!
My peaches and cream are about three foot and no sign of tassels yet. It is green and looks healthy. Maybe I'll getit right this year and pick before it gets starchy.
With P&C, you probably have about 5-7 days from the time the silks turn nice and brown. Then it might start getting a little starchy.
We grew a ton of sweet corn in my career and it always tended to be short compared to the field corn I grew as a child. The growers were fine with short corn since the sugars needed to concentrate in the corn less than the stalk.
Drive over to Iron City and Bainbridge and check out a few 1000 acres of sweet corn.
Haven't been over that way in a while, but I'll be sure to check it out if I'm over there.
Hey Travis. From what I’ve read, the main thing that determines corn height is the variety.. Solstice tassels between 5 and 6 feet so I think your plot is doing just fine. Watching the pumpkin segment gave me an idea. Take your smallest plot and make it dedicated to a single giant pumpkin plant. Plant the same cover cop mix that you put in the corn plot and let your chicken graze over the winter. Then get a big load of that gin compost delivered and spread it over the plot. Plant four plants in the middle, pick the strongest one and get rid of the other three. Use the compost to cover the vines and pout on the Natures Safe. I’d say you could get one close to 2k pounds. Put it on a trailer, parade it around town and take it to the fair. Easy peasy!!! Great video and looking forward to seeing what is in store on Wednesday.

Field pumpkins are interesting looking. There’s an old country community near the little Louisiana college town of Hammond, LA (Southeastern Louisiana University) that we had called Punkin Center. Fifty years have passed, and the road signs now read “Pumpkin Center.” That’s not the real name, and we old folks know it! It was all old truck farming out there, and pig raising.

I had the same problem here in Panama city Florida. I couldn't figure it out . I've grow it for years and never had the problem . Like you I know I gave it the fertilizer, the boost but it stayed short. I had to use sevin on it and bt To keep the bugs down and I put on the interval with the product . I still had worms in my corn. It's been a battle. I have some in the freezer with holes cut into it where the bugs were. So I'm having to share with the bugs.
We use Spinosad for the corn worms and it's usually pretty effective. Gotta spray the ears though.
Travis! You should not pick up a 200+ pound pumpkin after your back injury. Please be careful.

I found something for you.Early varieties are short and late varieties grow taller.Solstice is an early variety so you are doing well grasshopper!!!!

My corn failed and was stunted as well. I think it was from the shade it got from late afternoon on to sunset. Everyone is saying full all day sun or do not plant it at all.
Solstice sweet corn is supposed to tassel at 5'-6" to 6', so you'll need to go worry about something else instead. My Jimmy Red field corn tasseled at 10' last year and this year's Painted Mountain is supposed to only reach 5' to 6' at maturity. No laughing at Travis here after all the thoughtful work that you're putting into those pumpkins. Let's see what Brooklyn has to say to "Mr. Fractured Vertebra" regarding his plan to hoist a 200 lb. pumpkin.

I grow 2-5 acres of Painted Mountain every year, it does indeed max out between 5-6’ if it has plenty of water and fertilizer. However, I’ve grown Painted Mountain dryland and it only got to 3.5-4’, but had fully filled, full sized ears. Stock height doesn’t matter to me, grain yield is what I focus on.
Still trying to get some of my summer crops going. Blackberries are taking off tremendously. Of course I didn't get to prune them this year and so I have canes going everywhere. Finally got 1 cattle panel up for planting my 3 variety of grapes. I guess I'm just going to do tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and watermelon since that's all I have time for. Have you ever tried growing any baby corn? I would like to see how yours would turn out if you did. Yeah you may need to build a few more of those pallets to roll those humongous pumpkins onto. Oh yeah I need to get my pumpkins going for my chickens. I finally got us a few chickens. Mostly for eggs and fertilizer. Great video on the corn! I'd come help you and Brooklyn on corn day if I could.
Our blackberries are a mess too, but producing well nonetheless!
It has been really dry. Probably the lack of water. I have been growing a short variety of orange field corn. It is doing great and has a lot of ears on it. I have peaches and cream going too and had to water the area to get it to even come up.

I love sweet corn! It's one of the highlights of my summer. But the older I get, the harder it is for me to digest. After having colon cancer a couple of years ago, the problem has gotten worse. Are there any varieties which are known to be easier to digest? Or maybe a way of cooking the ears that softens the hulls to help with digestion?

What do you spray on your corn such as insecticides? If you spray BT, that’s very likely the cause of your digestive problems with your corn. Lots and lots of people have digestive issues with BT sprayed/gmo’d corn.
Not sure if any corn varieties are more digestible than others.
Hey Travis, I have to disagree with the acessment of Heat being a factor here. I also planted Solstice Sweat Corn this year, on 4/4/22. It's the shortest varity of sweetcorn we have ever grown. But, I do recall that the nights here in Southeast Ga during april was really chilly. My corn came up, but seemed to struggle to the the point that it may have stunted it's Height growth. The Corn today has great color and other wise very Strong looking, But it is Short. We will know in a few weeks if it is a Keeper!
Thanks for sharing Mike. I guess I forgot about any cool weather in April because May was so hot. What's crazy to me is how fast it has matured here. We planted the first week in April and ours is almost ready (this video was shot a week ago). That means a 55-60 day maturity compared to the 70 days that is listed for Solstice. That's fast!
Late to the party lol, but wanted to chime in. I live in Kentucky and have planted corn so early that it has frosted on it and still grows to be 7'-8' tall without any hiccups. I only grow Honey Select and use to buy local and the corn would get 7'-8', but 3 years ago I bought a bunch of seed from Hoss Tools and the corn is so short that Ive been worried and cant figure out what Ive done. The corn looks healthy just short. So Ive come to the conclusion that its just variety of the corn and possibly matters where you buy it. Im going back to local seed next year that has always produced tall corn to see if that is the variable.
Im thinking its like honey bees, you can buy Italian bees from two different companies and their Italians can express different traits from one another. All I know is the seed is the only constant that has changed with me when the corn started growing short, but we'll see next year. Good luck in the garden this year!

Former Texas panhandle farmer here. We planted corn there from 1st of April through 1st of June. The early corn is always shorten. Reason: the corn puts on leaves in sections we called joints (probably not scientifically accurate…). When it’s cold (and it could snow there in early May) the individual joints don’t grow much. The later corn has much longer joints at the base of the plant. I don’t know your history of planting but when you move it up in the spring a couple of weeks you can expect shorter corn. Just my 2 cents! Good news- short corn isn’t detrimental to yield. So, if your rounds are less or your length of ear is short, you probably do have something else going on. Enjoy your channel!

Hello. Thank you very much for all the videos full of knowledge you upload about plants, pests and your practical experience that you share with us. In the video of 05.31.22 on the corn, I saw behind you among the trees, an invasive tree that I see spreading in most parts of the USA. It is called "Ailanthus altissima". It is easily propagated by seeds and it is highly recommended to prevent it from flowering and making seeds. With persistence and systematicity one can greatly reduce its culture. Tank's from iarael.

i grow peaches n crème just because of its short height. we get a lot of wind here n the short corn doesn’t get blown down as easy. also it seems like you’ll get some height after tasseled.
Make sense. Keep it short and reduce the wind damage.
My okree is doin that! I hate bending over to find fruit, I worry I may miss some. Eye level is best!
Prune those lateral leaves and that will get it taller faster.
Early day maturity corn is always shorter in height…I had some 65 day corn that was 6 feet tall….your corn is just fine
If you side dress the corn does the fertilizer work if it not raining or you are watering it from a sprinkler. I’m watering and fertilizing mine in the drip tape.
If we’re not getting any rain, we’ll soak the beds good by running the drip overnight. That seems to work.
Have you ever tried hoss seeds? They seem to work great!

My sweet corn was invaded by wheat. Used bagged straw. I don’t advise using straw. But I was planning on trying to grow wheat eventually. So. I’ll keep it and see what I get.
Uggg. I used gardenstraw Wheaton straw to mulch for fall and the same happened to me. I took it off when I got ready for spring and tossed it in the compost and none of the wheat grew there. I've started using brown leaves from the forest at the edge of my property.
@@susanbailey3553 I pulled the wheat slips today from my peanut bed. And replanted them. Elsewhere. Also gonna use the rest of that straw/wheat to try actually get crop. I’ll post updates to my channel.

I have grown a bit of sweet corn and I’m not certain but seems like different varieties tasseled at different heights. Maybe it was weather related or variety but never seems to be the same year to year. Everytime I’ve grown the peaches and cream it’s never gotten over 6 ft or so before it’s tasseled but it’s always tasted the same
As long as it tastes good, that's all that matters!
A large part of my corn looks stunted. I think it's mostly due to drought.
Could it be the distance between the plants forcing them to compete which may have stressed them out?
Further research has suggested that this is the correct height for this variety. It's just a really fast-maturing variety.
Can or will applying spinosad to the silks affect the pollination process? And do you soak the silks or just moisten them?
I've never found it to affect pollination. We don't soak them. I just spray them with a fine mist nozzle along the outside of the plot and then hold the wand above the rows for the middle of the plot.
I think the commenters here are mostly right. Different varieties grow different heights. Couple years ago I grew some heirloom corn that topped 12 feet. Grew some early sweetglow next to it that was about 4 1/2 ft tall. Staggered them so no cross polination but the difference next to each other looked pretty silly. And that heirloom stuff had cobs as big as my forearm but wasn't the best eating-wise.
I mess with the dill's atlantic pumpkins every year but never very seriously. Without really doing anything I've grown a few 400 pounders. With some care and lots of fertilization it shouldn't be too tough to grow a really big one (1000 pounder+). Pruning and letting just one grow on the vine and burying vines will help too. You have the right ideas. Biggest I grew ended up being a giant green squash at about 500 lbs. One of these years I will dig in and get serious with them and see what I can do.

So you have to blanch the corn on the cob prior to freezing it?
Probably not a bad idea to do so. We don't freeze it on the cob. We cut it off the cob, cook it a bit, then freeze it in bags.

Got my 90 pepper plants in Sunday. Ended up with 86 maters. Elephant garlic is huge wonder when it will be ready to pick
Wait until the garlic forms seed heads, remove them, then wait for the leaves to start turning yellow.
@@LazyDogFarm just cut seed heads off with a scissors? Then once they die off then cure them on the ground?
@@prestonberg9604 scissors or a knife. You don't have to leave the garlic on the ground like we do onions. Just put them in a cool, dry place and they'll cure there.

I usually don't. You might even get a few extra ears from those suckers if you feed it well.
Once those field pumpkins start turning orange they're pretty much as big as they're gonna get.

my sweet corn grow in pots. they tassel at 6 weeks and I don't see any ears yet. the height range from 3 feet, 4 ft, 5 ft and 6 fts... :) all over.
I think it's probably what I did to them...their heights are about the same in the same pot. different heights in different pot. I water them about the same, that I know of. pots are in the same location.
I have never noticed that pond/lake/or whatever in the pastdo you fish in that body of water?
That pond belongs to my wife's uncle who owns the land around ours. We do fish it on occasion.
Trav, my peaches and cream is about 3 feet tall now, and I'm beginning to see the tassels starting to show. Is this normal?
Has anyone here used a couple of drops of mineral oil on the silks, where it comes out of the ear, to prevent corn ear worms? I tried this one year and had no issue with the worms that year.
That does work if you only have a few plants. On a larger plot, spraying Spinosad from a backpack sprayer is faster.
Yes that does work. But I've found in a plot the size of mine, which isn't even that big, the spinosad is more efficient.
About how tall are the red snappers suppose to get? I started them in March, planted them the end of April and they are already 3 1/2 -4 ft tall
Ours are close to 5' tall now. Third year growing them. Seems like that's about as tall as they'll get. The vertical growth will slow once they start putting on fruits.

Good video Travis. I’m not sure even a 200 lbs pumpkin is liftable. Not that the weight is too much, but it will be big, round, smooth, not like it has a set of handles on it. Hahaha…you better have lonnnnng arms to wrap around it my friend.

My yellowstone supersweet is the tallest most beautiful corn i ever seen....so far...im now pondering giving it some more nitrogen...i really have no idea what im doing...but i watch and rewatch your videos for clues...i do need to learn how to self fertlize them.
I planted them closer than u because they are in a raised bed...3 of em.
I know i should not of done that...but they are florida woven on the outside...lol. yes that happened in a year of total failure...so i did this..

Never have tried artichokes. If those corn leaves aren't dark green, give them more juice.
I would advise you to roll the 200lbs pumpkin 😂😂 and not try to pick it up cause it’s a lot harder cause they’re slick and acquired to grip… I am excited to see you grow something you and the kids can play around with and show off like a 18 point buck!! They can take up to 500 gallons of water a week per plant but that’s on bigger plants and I never did find a limit to the fertilizer so I slammed them all season last year!! But you should start rocking soon on those Atlantic Giants!
I could’ve swore you was probably 5’8” or so lol 😂 wouldn’t have thought you was over 6’… that corn is really deceiving! My peaches and cream corn 🌽 usually grows 6 1/2’ -7’ tall, this is the first year I’m actually growing something different cause for years all I’ve planted was peaches and cream cause I has always done so well here! You can also stick a few box fans on your corn if you need to help pollinate it. If anyone uses the box fans my advice is to use them on both sides of your corn facing each other.

I have a question I have plant corn 3 times following your advice on keeping it green plenty of nitrogen and the corn is just as sweet as it can be right off the plant but if you cook it more than 30 seconds it starts to mess up the flavor and the texture so most of the time I just eat it all

@@LazyDogFarm I don't think it has nothing to do with the variety I've had some silver Queen hybrid stuff from the local feed store and a yellow and white variety . I mean it's crazy it's so crisp and sweet without being cooked but you boil it for anything longer 30 seconds the crispness goes away along with the sweetness that's three times now is that how 🌽 supposed to be how long do you boil corn on the cob

Nice video Travis. Question. What are your thoughts of using bloodmeal for a very small experimental plot of container sweet corn? I’m growing in livestock stock tanks(2x2x6). Corn has gotten a GREAT start but just thinking about feeding moving forward. Thanks and please advise when you get a moment.
I think it would work if you incorporated it prior to planting or used it when the plants are small. Gotta give that stuff time to break down so that it can be absorbed by the plants. The Nature Safe we use has feather meal and blood meal in it and it works well.

You might want to thread some twine through your corn so as it grows it won't blow over as it gets taller. For some reason corn grown in containers are not that strong. To stand up to winds. So I get t-post and twine and thread it through like the Florida weave . That Travis did to his sweet peas.

Nirvana sweet corn looked to be the same hight as yours that grew last year. Im growing it again this year. I did have a watering issue while I was on vacation. Let’s just say it got watered to much.

I just bought some ears from a man who planted sweet obsession and I asked him why his sweet corn was so short and he said he's planted it for 3 years now and said its just the type.

Very strange, I have several (I think 6) bags of NatureSafe 13-0-0 and mine is different than yours. Mine looks like GrapeNuts Cereal, and is very light and fluffy... what you were putting out, looks like pellets which is what my 8-5-5 looks like.... wonder if they make that stuff differently by batch or something. Not sure my corn is gonna make... it's looking to me like it's going to tassel "early"... before the silks are completely formed... kinda bummed as I've put more effort into that corn than I have in many years... and looks like it's gonna skunk me... already planted my second planting (field corn)... may have to replant sweet corn later in the year, in order to put any in the freezer this year... that's not gonna make me happy. On a positive note, my Peanuts are doing just great... looks like they are gonna really do well.
The 8-5-5 and 13-0-0 I have looks like layer pellets. The 10-2-8 I have looks like chick crumbles. So there are definitely some different "compositions" so to speak.
@@LazyDogFarm Interesting, my 13-0-0 is like the chick crumbles... I have 6 bags of it (3 I just purchased)... all the same. They must obviously change that up by batch/lot or at some point decided to do it differently. My corn has suddenly added a couple feet in height... didn't think it was gonna make, but it fooled me. :) My field corn is behaving much better! Of course it's easier to grow/manage.

I can promise ya... that was the year after a sludge application on our farm... then the farmer supplemented it with some micronutrients... some places it looked 14 foot tall...

We’ve removed all the fruits so that we only have one per plant. Probably need to increase the special concoction frequency.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since I've been following you for a few years now, you have recently been making lots of changes to your fertilizer use. Years back you were straight synthetics, now you've done soil tests and are adding limited amendments. Maybe these changes are producing a more normal size crop, like the shorter corn, rather than the forced growth that comes from regular synthetics. Now you are depending on your soil chemistry and it might not be as uniform as you might think. 20-20-20 through a drip like will make the whole row grow, but six chickens on a clover crop may not be as uniform.
Good points. Although we did till the plot several times post-chicken tractor, so that should have equally dispersed everything pretty well.
