A tip for small plots of corn (mine is 4' x 8'), I will go around the entire plot and lightly shake the tassels to dislodge the pollen then I use my DeWalt DCE100 blower set on the lowest setting and once again go around the plot and blow the pollen off of the leaves (Blowing the pollen toward the center of the plot). This creates a nice cloud of pollen, ideal for a small plot. I repeat the process about every 2 to 3 days, it has worked well for me.
This is a great Idea! Thanks for the tip! I also have a 4' x 8' plot of corn. Last summer I fit 2 dozen in there (4 rows of 6). How many are you able to grow comfortably in a 4' x 8' plot?
WOW GRETA INFO. hehe I just have a 5 by 10 spot in a community garden so I guess I planted it wrong. NEXT year I will watch this again BEFORE I plant my small amount of corn. THANK YOU
I made the mistake of planting just one row. I went to eat my first ear of corn that i harvested, and I saw that only about 60% of the kernels were formed. Now I know better for next year!`
Check out the link below for our growing guide. It has our recommended schedule for corn. growhoss.com/blogs/growing-guides/corn?_pos=1&_psq=+corn+growing&_ss=e&_v=1.0
Hello I planted 60 peachesmonster and sweet mix the plants are 6-7 foot they have monster stalk diameter at base larger than golf ball deep green healthy looking plants my tassels are just about up on all my plants but i dont have any silks/ears forming yet is that ok is it to early or is somthing wrong? this is my first time growing corn
After corn silks are fertilized by the tassels at the top of the stalk, they'll shrivel up as the ears mature. This happens about three weeks after the silks form. The corn kernels become ripe just about the same time as the silks become brown and shriveled. There are different maturity groups in corn, i.e. different varieties require different length of time from plant emergence to tasseling, and ultimately pollination and ear growth.
For sweet corn, it is when the silks turn brown, dry, and shriveled. Use your fingernail to puncture a kernel. The liquid inside is going to tell you a lot about your timing. If the liquid that comes out is very clear and watery, they're not ripe yet. If you can see through the liquid and yet it looks milky, the corn is perfect for picking.
How often do y'all fertilize the corn. I have been fertilizing about once a month should I be fertilizing more often. My corn for the last two years it's only gotten about 4-ft tall on different varieties I've tried silver Queen triple sweet of one variety and they all got 4-ft tall and really didn't put out big ears of corn like they said they would.
My tassels are just starting to peak out the top but no sign at all of ears yet, does this mean the timing is off and can I do anything about it now?? Btw it’s a sweet corn
Thank you...I learned a lot. I am assuming you are located in a warm state. I am in western Montana and the planting times a a little different. I had poor pollination this year (2021). It was an especially hot year. We get a lot of wind and I have rich soil so I am trying to figure why the pollination was so bad. I think as you suggested that the timing was off. I think it tasseled before the silk came on. Wondering if this could be heat stress. Great video.
Good looking corn. Forgive me if you have already answered this question in a previous video and I missed it. We are in South Alabama (Roll Tide) 8B zone. Can we plant a second crop of corn and potatoes or is it just too hot here?
We planted a second crop a few weeks ago. We have many customers who succession plant corn all throughout the warm growing season. Just gotta make sure you've got good irrigation and feed it well as it is going to grow much faster when those heat units start cranking.
I grew corn for the first time this year I am 6'2 and the corn stalks towered over me by a good amount might of been 7' or 7' 6" did not remember to measure it before chopped up the stalks at growing season end.
Seems like we did when we were kids. But since we've started using drip irrigation, we really haven't had any issues with it. Don't know if that's the reason why, but I haven't seen any corn smut in a long time.
Hi guys love the row to row garden show but I have one question regarding to fertilizer it will be ok to apply some before rain is showing or will be better if is applied later when there is no rain showing in the week? Sorry it maybe a silly question but I am new at this
Also I REALLY don't know how to water the corn as most newbies don't know what an inch of water a week means. Some websites say the roots are 6' under ground and some say they're shallow so I've watered too much and not enough.. I'm sure. I don't know what fertilizer to use and websites give all this contradictory information (I have no other yard space either so I need to replant in the same spot next year and desire a way to build the Nutrients back up before replanting) so scared as it seems no one's been responding to their videos posts.
If you spray it at the right time, it won't bother them. We have a hive right beside the garden and have never seen a population decline while using it. Just make sure to spray it late in the evenings or at night after the bees have gone to bed.
Can you help - all was good with the corn pods starting - then I got lots of ants going in where the pods are. Now the corn pods are flat and the bottom leaves dead. Do not want any spray advice nor cannot afford to buy anything.
@@gardeningwithhoss Yes - all done correctly including planting depth/soil/location/wind protection/water etc - the problem was with the ants - not something anyone has so far known about.
Great question and many things that can cause this. Read the article below. cropwatch.unl.edu/why-corn-so-short-unl-cropwatch-july-3-2012#:~:text=Slower%20cell%20expansion%20leads%20to,shorter%20than%20later%20planted%20corn.
At about 3 minutes into the video he starts saying things that I have no idea what they mean (hilling up). My plot is about 8 x 20 and I currently have 70 stalks remaining as the squirrels or bunnies ate them up in the beginning. I don't know what hilling up your corn means but they are a short variety and the websites say to plant rows 2-3' apart with corn 12" apart but he said 4".
Respectfully, I am very appreciative of your input on 20-20-20, as well as, worm prevention. But, the spinosad spray on label states 0.5% spinosad and "other ingredients" 99.5%. Have you researched exactly what the other ingredients are??
@@gardeningwithhoss Okay, and you may be right. Just hard for me to trust something when they intentionally are not transparent on labeling ALL ingredients.

Good information. I will grow sweet corn this year for the first time in 51 years so wish me luck… thanks
Thank you.
As a beginner,
I enjoy your informative, down to earth videos.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to make these videos! Your gift of knowledge and experience is well appreciated!

Me too! Then next year I did 5 rows but worms, lack of water etc no fertilizer. I'm trying to correct all this year!!
I use a homemade habanero pepper spray for my corn and other plants in my garden, never chemical pesticides.
How much fertilizer does corn need? I used a ton of compost and a 10 10 10 fertilizer 3x and it only grew 3ft. Weather was great.

How long after pollination the corn will be ready for harvesting???
around 3 weeks

my corn looks good this year after following your advice. i have multiple ears on golden bantem and silverqueen!
p.s. Corn Roast!!!
Great to hear! Enjoy your harvest!
Great video with great information! Thank you sir
Glad it was helpful!
Wonder if bagging tassles for later would work if the timing was off.
Not sure the pollen would still be viable if not attached to the plant.
How do I know when to pick the corn this is the first time I have ever grown it
For sweet corn, it is when the silks turn brown, dry, and shriveled.
Use your fingernail to puncture a kernel. The liquid inside is going to tell you a lot about your timing. If the liquid that comes out is very clear and watery, they're not ripe yet. If you can see through the liquid and yet it looks milky, the corn is perfect for picking.
Now do you spray the silks themselves or just around them
Spray the silks themselves.
What is the best part of the silk to hand pollinate the ends of silk or by the ear???
Wait until the tassels are fully open and beginning to shed the yellow pollen. You can begin pollination as soon as the silk emerges.
We do it every couple weeks.
My tassels are just starting to peak out the top but no sign at all of ears yet, does this mean the timing is off and can I do anything about it now?? Btw it’s a sweet corn
You won't see silks usually until the tassels really emerge.

yes it could
I just ordered some Temptress seeds from yall I haven't planted yet in Texas Im wondering how it grows did you like it?
I liked it very much. Just ate a big bowl of it from some we had in the freezer.
Leaf blower us the official pollinator!
Hey, how was the yield for the incredible sweet corn?
great
Travis, does it matter if the rows go north-south, or east-west for optimiz your corn growth
Some people will swear by planting in a specific direction, but I haven't found that it matters.
How long can I keep fertilizing my corn
final fertilization at 8-10 weeks
Looks better than mine. Mine didn't get taller than 3 feet.
My corn is doubled but they are only half full they have lots of silks and tassel for pollination..why and will they still grow
They should, give them more time.

If we're "spoon-feeding" through the drip, we usually don't worry about an upcoming rain as long as it's not a torrential downpour.
@@gardeningwithhoss thanks for your help keep the good things coming
I was wondering what kind of tiller or tool are you using that leaves such a clean smooth level top on your plots?
We have a Grillo tiller that we use occasionally.
Is that the G46 and do you know where a dealer is? Thanks for taking the time to help us
Not sure of the specific model, but we got it from Earth Tools in Kentucky.
Our corn has holes in its leaves. What causes that
corn borer
Can you use BT on corn for the worms like you do for Tomatoes
It doesn't work as well for corn ear worm as it does for tomato hornworm. Spinosad is the sure fire bet to make sure you don't have corn ear worms.
@@gardeningwithhoss Thanks, Travis
My wife and I live in N.C is it to late to plant corn. We have always planted earlier but this year didn't work out

why are the rows so wide?
Standard corn spacing is usually 30-36" rows. Ours are spaced 36" apart.

nitrogen until the tips of the leaves burn!
