Being an architect is so varied. It's boring, exciting and stressful... But there is no better feeling than to watch a building you designed rise up from nothing. You get to work with interesting people and some real assholes. The hours can be long but the same can be said about engineering and a lot of other professions. As far as money goes it can be good or average again it depends on your priorities in life. A year ago I made a choice to work for a developer and now earn more than most senior level professionals, the sacrifice has been the 'architect lifestyle'... But that's what you do when you have kids!
To all the newbs, I'm an architect. Think very carefully about going into this profession, it will take over your life so only let it in, if you're prepared for it to stay. Forever. And not always in a good way.
A degree isn't enough, to be a registered architect you need a masters. After that you can work as an 'architectural assistant' while you take the part time (mostly distance learning) professional qualification course which allows you to become fully registered.
architects get pigeon holed, people think all we do is draw when in reality our job is incredibly complex and requires not just design but technical and project management skills. Add to that the fact clients feel they can haggle with our fees in a way they'd never think of doing with a lawyer or an accountant. That said, if you have a good business plan, it can be a decent career
@@ronukocaulder2725 hello, 16 year old here and im planning on doing Maths, comp sci and Art for A-levels (+ French but thats irrelevent). These seem like a good fit as you get the creative part of designing something + the logical aspect of it with maths

After I saw these videos I began sketching and now my friends tell me I'm fantastic! Thanks again and I hope that one day I'll be as good an architect as you are!
VERY NICE! I remember being 17 (1991) when I decided to become an architect. My father was a C.E. which contributed, but it all began one day walking home from school. It began to rain, so to stay dry, I went into a new model home nearby. I looked around, and found it interesting. I picked up some floorplans and took them home. I got a few pages of dad's graph paper and just for fun, designed my own floorplan using ideas from the floorplans. So today, after a long, hard road, I am an architect.

Yes, architects can also do interior design and furniture design. This is not to be confused with interior decoration, which deals with choosing decoration and utility elements for an existing space. Interior design deals with creating the actual space and elements in it. There are interior designers and decorators that are specialized to do exactly that and there is a lot to study and learn in these fields alone.

@BurningSilk: Architects design the way buildings look and work, but engineers calculate all the things you are worried about. As an architect you would know how to approximate almost exactly the dimensions needed for a construction to be viable, but civil engineers are the experts who do the math (structural calculations). There are also engineers for installations (plumbing, electrical, etc). They all work as a team with the architect overseeing the project.
architects still predominately work with their hands to design buildings - use pens and pencils on paper to draw schematic plans, build scale models of designs, and some, not all, like to carry a sketchbook to note random ideas. Since architecture revolves around buildings in reality, it's essential to realise the project as a physical item, not just something on a computer screen. Hence, if you want to buy a laptop for games, architecture won't be much of an excuse.

Aw, five years ago I used to watch these videos trying to convince myself I could become an architect, mainly because my father wanted me to be one. I entered university and by week two I WAS DONE with architecture. Gladly, I found my way and true vocation on Information Design. Now I have my bachelor's degree and couldn't be more happy with my profession. What I learned was that, sure, architecture shares some fields with design, BUT IT IS BORING. You barely get to draw, to create, you barely get to imagine. If you are considering anything like graphic design, visual communication, art, fashion, industrial design, or so...DON'T CONSIDER ARCHITECTURE. DON'T. I have never felt so distant from my desire to pick up a pencil and sketchbook more than on those two weeks. Seriously, I cried at nights wishing I was painting color-wheels like design students instead of drawing the layout for a room with a bunch of rulers for the third time.

right. manual drafting and sketching skills define an architect. @123dongeo yes architects can design chairs and furnitures because they understand ergonometric and anthropometrics too and most of all an architect is an artist.
Different universities in the UK teach architecture in different ways, but you want to go to one which is RIBA accredited. I go to Newcastle University. I love it here. If you enjoy drawing and creating, architecture might be for you. And how much a job earns is a problem with everything. No-one can promise you that you will earn a certain amount, regardless of what you study and become. The most important thing is that you do something you enjoy, and when you do, you might potentially earn lots
Honestly, i really want to be an architect. Ever since 5th grade, i like drawing house floorplans. Over the years, my floorplans have gotten better and more detailed. I've read tons of books on the subject.
Colleges in NY, i'd say that either University at Buffalo (UB) or SUNY Alfred State are your cheapest options for architecture. Unless you want to go to a private school, then it will be more costly. I'm a senior in high school and I've been looking into this too.
Me too. I'm 15 now, and I finally decided to do something related to Architecture or let me learn more about it... So I'm going to a summer program about architecture this summer~! XP
I love designing my own things like, well ANYTHING! I would love to design phones, furniture, buildings, houses, cars, fudge I don't even care what it is but what I don't like is the work. Pshh give the poor people a brake they love what they're doing but it goes too far when you have to do it 24/7
A job is doing something for money. A career is doing something because you love it, just remember that before you make a decision. Fortunately you can have the best of both worlds with this career path. (;
Hi my friend how r u . I have u are well and healthy . You helped me a lot when I was in college, during the very rough times id always go back to some of your videos .. i just want to say thank you and hope the best for you.
Ky 15 Ky 15 Don't let whatever anyone else says affect your opinion. Do it if you want to, do it if it makes you happy, do it if it's your one true passion. If this is really something you want to do, work won't seem like a chore. If you're willing to do all the work, go for it.
Starting architect college September Am not about to let people tell me not to go for it Every career is special If it's your calling Like it is mine Don't let even yourself stop u when it seems hard
I know that UT, A&M, and TTU have architecture programs. UT and A&M are tier 1 universities. TTU is tier 2 but still has a good program and good facilities.
So.. Im still deciding in to what to study.. Graphic design or Architecture? I guess is like not so apart one to another but anyway it's like a whole new level at same time.. I would love to study both, but would it matter?
the amount of study and work in general outweighs the pay. not to mention it can take years to build yourself up to a good salary. but if you love it do it. its also been effective by the gfc quite considerably
realistic? Just because CAD programs are used more often than not doesn't mean drawing or sketching is an obsolete skill. On the contrary sketching is extraordinarily important and can only enhance the architect's ability to convey ideas quickly and artfully to a client. Good luck running your own firm if you can't sketch decently. It's done, but not the norm. I'm sure you'll find plenty of videos on the internet showing architectural CAD drafting. This happens not to be that channel.
@Nightmonkey17 It's not that bad at all. The curriculum's ask for Calculus at the most. Some schools you can even slide by that and just take trig. It's not a big deal. HOWEVER, the more science and math courses and the more independent courses you take --like accounting and construction courses-- the more likely you'll be hired on. Architects are underrated as their 'job description' is A LOT more detailed than what most people realize.
hey guys and girls, I have a question. When u form an architectural team how do you work? Does everyone move aside and form an idea that is going to be put on the table and be discussed along with the other ones to lead to the final decision or you work as a team all the time?
I've always had the dream of becoming an architect, I love to create, design, draw and invent, I always have. I can draw and design for hours and hours and never get bored, I'm 20 and the only profession I'm interested in is architect. However I've had and I still have a rough life situation, I don't go to college, and I'm so scared to follow my dream, but I just really want to design buildings :(
That is good information for me. I want to be an architect after i graduated in 2015! I have to do a senior prpject when i go back to school. Also I have to build my own design, I have one so far but I'm waiting on the approval. I have to find a mentor too. It going to be hard.
I guess I've always made little house designs all the time when I was little... But I also had a searing passion for astrophysics, and now years later, after hell and high water I've had to revaluate my life priorities because I literally didn't know what I wanted to do with my life anymore. I just began uni to get a degree in physics but I don't know what to do anymore. Recently I came across a thing offered by my university that took my personality, interests, skills, etc. And spit out "architect" as the number 1 career result for me... I'm very optimistic right now about the subject, but after focusing on physics for so long I don't really know what to expect? That's why I'm praying and doing my research before I do anything else. Maybe God had a different idea for me all along? IDK but maybe I can decide later on that this is the perfect blend for my creative and technical sides...
thank you soo much , everyone tells me that i cannot be an architect ..because of my math , daamn it , but i can draw pretty well and im hoping , i think and i believe that i can do that , if not , i will choose something else
what courses did you end up taking? i’m aspiring to be an architect but i’m unsure what to pick for my college courses! i’m stuck between a vocational level 3 btec i. art and design or civil engineering, or 3 a levels on maths, art and graphic communication, thankyou!
@WavieeAlex You certainly can, if you try hard and/or excel in other areas. I'm can't draw very well either, but I'm a good designer and model builder. Even though my drawings weren't great, my project in a design competition placed 2nd out of 150 entries. I'm still hoping to learn how to use computers to help me draw, but if this is something you really want to do, go for it!
Are the mathematical details very stringent for architects? I have a BA degree and I know I would have to play some math catch-up if I wanted to try for a Master's in architecture or urban planning. What exactly is required?
What pens do yoy use for these awesomes drafts and drawings, thanks fot answering cuz im really into architecture and also naval architecture (for boats)?
i make designs that are very simple, but i put a lot thought in making one. my goal is to make functional structures especially for poor urban places because there are a lot of it in our country but my instructor always comments on my works that he wants good material presentation and i always get a failing grade. should i pursue my goal or do what my instructor wants? btw in not that bad of an artist i got highest in visual tech.
is it possible to get hired as arch.viz.or executive architect , or anything to do with architecture without degree but with great selftaught 3d modeling and rendering skills presented on portfolio ?
As an architecture studen i want to ask you, what is your take on digital media? seems as if most of your work is done manually. Why do it traditionally instead of digitally?
@WavieeAlex yes, you must practice the techniques and you will gain proficiency. Making many mistakes at first is common in any profession such as this. You will learn your own methods afterward and become more comfortable. You will see how practice pays off. It can be fun, for the rest of your life.
I'm taking BS Architecture degree this school year. But i'm not good at drawing. It there's a chance that my drawing skill will be better? Please i need your opinion 😃.

I'm going to be an architect when I grow up and I'm only a kid yet I still study xD
Do art of drawing it will help you with architecture
Same
Wardo X what college should I go to new York for architecture major?
Nalain Abbas the most affordable and most reliant :)
Colleges in NY, i'd say that either University at Buffalo (UB) or SUNY Alfred State are your cheapest options for architecture. Unless you want to go to a private school, then it will be more costly. I'm a senior in high school and I've been looking into this too.
wanted to be an architect. had the skills and drive, minus the math. but then life went sideways. still loving this
Pshh give the poor people a brake they love what they're doing but it goes too far when you have to do it 24/7
ThatOneUA-camChannel I
architecture kills you it's not just drawing
you can specialize in anything you want. I specialize in high end residential.
A job is doing something for money. A career is doing something because you love it, just remember that before you make a decision. Fortunately you can have the best of both worlds with this career path. (;
Hi my friend how r u . I have u are well and healthy . You helped me a lot when I was in college, during the very rough times id always go back to some of your videos .. i just want to say thank you and hope the best for you.
I'm a junior in high school and have enjoyed drawing structures and houses since i was in the 4th grade, and I still do.
I really want to do this but then again I've heard it's not worth it because of the work that comes with it
Ky 15 Ky 15 Don't let whatever anyone else says affect your opinion. Do it if you want to, do it if it makes you happy, do it if it's your one true passion. If this is really something you want to do, work won't seem like a chore. If you're willing to do all the work, go for it.
Starting architect college September
Am not about to let people tell me not to go for it
Every career is special
If it's your calling
Like it is mine
Don't let even yourself stop u when it seems hard
It is hard... and it does not pay well...and by the time you understand everything and become a fluent architect it will be time to retire...
i cant wait to be an architect
U seem like ur into gaming 😄
What kinda pencil is being used in the video?
that my dream since i was 9. now im on the way. :-)
Are you an architect??????very very intrigued !!
I know that UT, A&M, and TTU have architecture programs. UT and A&M are tier 1 universities. TTU is tier 2 but still has a good program and good facilities.
So you want to be a architect? Name every building ever created.
So.. Im still deciding in to what to study.. Graphic design or Architecture? I guess is like not so apart one to another but anyway it's like a whole new level at same time.. I would love to study both, but would it matter?
there's a HUGE difference between the two. you're talking about 2 very different careers
Neither.. look at something else and the pay packet and go from there...
I'm focusing mostly on how to become an architect.....the info is very useful to me...hoping fr mre
the amount of study and work in general outweighs the pay. not to mention it can take years to build yourself up to a good salary. but if you love it do it.
its also been effective by the gfc quite considerably
I've known this for some time, most work is built off of clients asking you to make a certain thing rather than come up with something on your own.
However I've had and I still have a rough life situation, I don't go to college, and I'm so scared to follow my dream, but I just really want to design buildings :(
@back2thefuture1000 I think it's the best definition I've ever heard.
We @IDEA college of architecture and design school, focus more on practicals than theory, our study tour explores a log of architectural work.
lmao I clicked this video, and what I thought was the video ( it was the ad) said "You need new glasses"
That is good information for me. I want to be an architect after i graduated in 2015! I have to do a senior prpject when i go back to school. Also I have to build my own design, I have one so far but I'm waiting on the approval. I have to find a mentor too. It going to be hard.
Hello Doug 👋 did you ever tell me what brand is the straight edge you use for work?
I have to watch this for school work
I guess I've always made little house designs all the time when I was little...
I was always fascinated by architecture. Ended up becoming a Mechanical Designer...Life I like a box of Chocolate Bolts!!
o.m.g same here! Since i was eight, now 16, I'm just making sure i'm taking the right courses in school.
what courses did you end up taking? i’m aspiring to be an architect but i’m unsure what to pick for my college courses! i’m stuck between a vocational level 3 btec i. art and design or civil engineering, or 3 a levels on maths, art and graphic communication, thankyou!
I'm 15 years old and already have decided that I want to become an architect. Have you got any tips which I can work with...? Thanks!
What pens do yoy use for these awesomes drafts and drawings, thanks fot answering cuz im really into architecture and also naval architecture (for boats)?
hi, just wondering how big is that Alvin Triangle you're using? how many inches? thank you.
love your videos they inspire me i love drawing....what mechanical pencils do you use and marker pens etc thanks again
yes me too, i'm 15, nearly 16 and I needed that video to do this draw
I really wanted to an architect but I'm not so good in math but still I won't give up!
i make designs that are very simple, but i put a lot thought in making one. my goal is to make functional structures especially for poor urban places because there are a lot of it in our country but my instructor always comments on my works that he wants good material presentation and i always get a failing grade. should i pursue my goal or do what my instructor wants? btw in not that bad of an artist i got highest in visual tech.
is it possible to get hired as arch.viz.or executive architect , or anything to do with architecture without degree but with great selftaught 3d modeling and rendering skills presented on portfolio ?
Seems like my line of interest and quirks.
I heard you have to make a design on graph paper. Is this true? If not, what do they use?
As an architecture studen i want to ask you, what is your take on digital media? seems as if most of your work is done manually. Why do it traditionally instead of digitally?
@WavieeAlex yes, you must practice the techniques and you will gain proficiency. Making many mistakes at first is common in any profession such as this. You will learn your own methods afterward and become more comfortable. You will see how practice pays off. It can be fun, for the rest of your life.
kool thanks :)
i also did some research. is it true it takes about 7 years to complete architect course????
I'm taking BS Architecture degree this school year. But i'm not good at drawing. It there's a chance that my drawing skill will be better?
Please i need your opinion 😃.
XOLIGHTNWIND forget architecture... get into project management..you’ll thank me later...
Hey, I'm like fresh out of the womb young, I'm still deciding on my career and architecture is one of my choice since I'm a little bit good at art
Does any architect already in the field have have advices for me?
What to expect happening, what obstacles I might face, and do I have to sell my soul at one point to become successful?
Sir where can I learn to create my own plans. Suggest me some ideas, how to partition a floor and dimensions of rooms etc...
I'm really inspired from this video. Thanks!!!
Great video!
=.= ... I'm struggling with my architectural drawings .. It's easy as some people can say .. But I just can't seem to understand it .. It really confuses me .. Hmmm any advice ?
Thanks for the video!
If you've been thinking about something for so long, you might as well be on your way to become an architect! I'm 16 and I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I'm older.
thanks for sharing with us these important information
