Architecture Short Course: How to Develop a Design Concept

  • All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects.
Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept.
Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build.
The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain.
And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology - is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective.
All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept - our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process.
    Concept Inspirations Discussed:
    - Site
    - Client
    - Narrative
    - Materials
    - Structural
    - Mainifestos
    - Formal
As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept - the one or two-line description - can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects.

I think architect engage in 'junk-talk' because they have not theory of architecture that deals with its true content: people and their buildings. A person who knows their craft can easily explain it to anyone. A person who doesn't engages in 'junk-talk' to impress themselves and some peers.

I'm a disabled veteran and I only began studying architecture to become a better builder in certain building games (As that's what occupies most of my time nowadays). I've watched hours and hours of videos on this subject and I have to say that after finding your video I look at architecture as a whole in a completely different light. I had absolutely no idea going in that it was as deep as it is or how absolutely profound it can be. Thank you for this video even if I can't or won't ever use this in a professional setting it's been a revealing experience.

This is brilliant, and a delight to watch - thank you!
I've been informing myself about IT architecture in the past few weeks, and for some reason the algorithm gods thought this video was related.
SW design involves thinking about things like:
    - the architectural precedents for systems of this type
    - regulatory and budget constraints
    - how users will need to navigate in the system, what public and private spaces need setting up
    - what the application landscape looks like that the system will be integrated into
    - what platform it will run on
    - how it will interact with other systems
    - the technology stack that will be used to build it...
Turns out - the algorithm wasn't wrong. Many of the principles you presented are very much applicable to the design of software.

Loved the way how it transitioned from one stage of development to the next. Thank you for helping people like me to understand more about this amazing field. This video cleared so many doubts I had in mind, which I thought might be made fun of if I had asked a senior since I am expected to know these basic details because I am a graduate. If possible, could you please do a video on how to analyze a building at a visual scale and transfer it to a drawing to scale.

You're quite welcome +Lakshmi Pillai, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Our educational experiences are all different and as individuals we learn in unique ways. If we both listened to the same lecture we would naturally take away different things; informed by our life experience. It's no surprise then that our relatively short time in school doesn't teach us everything we need to know about design, or architecture, or anything in too much detail. If we're lucky it equips us with new ways to see the world and the confidence to question things we don't understand. Kudos to you for recognizing that learning doesn't end at university.
I'll certainly add your video request to the production queue. Cheers...!

@@30by40 The problem in architecture school is lack of a clear theory of design and a greater theory of architecture. I don't mean an 'art' theory, but as I've commented above, a theory about buildings as they are used by people. My engineering friends were taught engineering design as a system of connections, in architecture we were not taught anything except how to draw, in effect. Like teaching swimming by throwing a non-swimmer in the pool, or nuclear physics by dropping atom bombs. HIghly ineffective and practically irrelevant.

It is kind of ironic that I just found your comment. I'm a 16 year old student and I'm currently struggling to decide whether I'll study physics (specifically to do experimental physics later on) or architecture (rather thinking about doing it "the social way" and trying to work in developing countries with sustainable technologies).
Now I don't really know of any professional I could ask for advice concerning this decision. If you'd mind telling me your opinion on this issue I'd really really appreciate it a lot!

Wonderful! The way you explained made a lot of sense. A must watch for any student of Architecture. Had I seen it back in Architectural school my studio assignements would have been something else completely.
It is wonderful to see that what we as Architects intutively work on, you have reflected on of workflows of not only yourself but others and capsuled the entire concept in a systemic format. Lovely. I simply loved it!

This is such great information! I’m a draftsman, and work with architects trying to overcome design problems on older houses. None of these older homes offer the amenities of newer homes, and it is our challenge to bring these homes up to date. I truly appreciate the time you take to explain everything in such detail. This information is very useful to me.

great video...you articulate the conceptual design process very well...made me realize that I myself go through all of these stages in some degree as I start a new project...it's nice to see that I'm on the right path. I love this process the most I think it feeds my soul. I think I'll stop being so hard on myself from now on as I see now that the evolution of the design is always continuously moving and changing as I get more client feed back and deal with city codes. this use to bother me and made me a little less confident of my ability to "nail it"....I realized that the end product was always better after I let go and listened to the clients concerns and requests for changes.....I love Architecture!

Alot of this video was fascinating!!!!
Like I think this way alot never know how to apply thinking this way.
Order of how to think about a design.
Order of how to approach a concept. As starting to build a portfolio.
To just go with a floor plan. Is 1 thang.
But to get deeper in to the concept of a idea of design a house. Or building.

As an architect with 50 years of experience designing a wide range of building types this is the best presentation of concept and how it informs design that I have ever come across. I would live to see how he deals with a tight urban space which both more problems (constraints) , and more opportunities for the concept to draw from its context.

I have to say, that I LOVED this video. As a student, I am trying to approach design for others for the first time and while our lectures have given us a lot of historical perspective, the emotion involved in home design is harder to capture. I think you have explained that in a tangible way, if that is possible. So much so, I'm sending the lecturer a link because I think he may want to recommend this to the class.
To the 9 year old who commented below, hang onto that dream. I was 13 when I realised I wanted to design buildings. I am 51 this year and I have just started my Building Design course.
