Love Paul's sense of humor. Wish I can have a conversation with him. I would ask all cool questions too. Like instrument playing questions, if he still plays drums on occasion, if he'd like to smoke a bowl of some good pot (my treat of course) .....The Beatles for the most part are/were pretty humble, down-to-earth, regular guys that chanced into the most important and successful rock band arguably ever. The thing that was cool is that all stayed pretty humble after mass success.
John Miller I bumped into Paul McCartney 2 weeks ago on Penny Lane.He was filming a carpool episode with a English comedian James corden. That's twice I've bumped into him now..
Great to hear the old stories Paul, I'm from the 60s so saw the Beatles from start, when I was about 16, we went to a friends house during school lunch hour and played the track Anna, with a snare drum and sang along to the song, and others, great great memories Paul, we then started a school band.....
All four of The Beatles did some great work in their solo years. Wings was a good experience for Paul. His status as a former Beatle got him nothing in Wings' early days. They literally had to start at the bottom and work their way up, often offering to play for free at various universities. This made them hungry for success, which made them work harder, which increased the quality of the music. Adversity helps make for good art.
"when someone like john lennon says you play muzak it hurts". nice glimpse of paul showing his true feelings for john, the whole younger kid looking up to the older talented band mate that was john. only person in the world who could hurt paul. in his mind, his only equal.
Although its a bit cringey and a bit cruel,I like to see Paul asked and answer questions like this, because you start to see a real insight which you rarely get to see with Paul because he's so media savvy. This isnt anywhere near the best but there are very few interviews where we see the really real Paul McCartney.
Music industry caught up the Beatles;; they all got rich : etc yoko Ono; John Lennon & Paul Mccarthy broke up 💔 friendship their for alittle while etc etc ; hear Paul Mccarthy wanted the group to break ,; yoko Ono said that it on the internet
Paul and John actually started mending whatever bitterness that was between them for a time while John was with May Pang. After John got back with Yoko they both didn't mutually get together until shortly before John was killed. One thing that was good although tragic ending with John's death is both very mutually got together before John died. There was no more bitter rift between them that John took to the grave with him.
+Bill Bass exactly. there is that legendary story was that paul and linda visited john and yoko at the dakota in 1976 where they were just being cool and later that night was that famous episode of "saturday night live" where lorne michaels offered the band $5000 to reunite and sing five songs. john and paul were watching and almost went to snl studios but they were too tired.
There's an interview with John when he was in L.A. during his separation from Yoko. He was asked if The Beatles would get back together. John said (paraphrasing), "If I think of it tomorrow, yes." I think John sunk so much of his identity into Yoko, that he didn't know what to do with himself at that time. He needed to feel like he belonged somewhere. My take is that he had insecurities he struggled with and wasn't sure how to deal with them. Yoko made him feel needed. John and the rest of The Beatles had been like brothers, from their teen years through their late twenties. They had been of one mind in the early days. As they became men, their interests changed. There's nothing wrong with that; that is how life is. I think they didn't realize it was happening, though. If they did realize it, they weren't sure what to do about it. They had fewer and fewer shared experiences. Yoko accelerated the process. It didn't have to go the way that it did; they could have figured out how to endure. However, while they all enjoyed the absurd, and the random, John almost made a religion out of it in his relationship with Yoko. Bringing Yoko into their inner sanctum, which had only included George Martin, Geoff Emerick, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall, and a few others, was an affront to the others. Notice that these were all men. This isn't sexism. The guys felt comfortable to be creative, open, and themselves. Now add a girlfriend...amidst a divorce...and a young son. That makes things awkward very quickly. Add to that, Yoko would sometimes give creative suggestions. If life-long trusted friends Mal or Neil made a suggestion, they would have found it easy to listen. Now, add Yoko, who was uninvited. This explanation is getting complicated rather quickly. I think growing up, growing apart, drugs, bad business, etc., certainly contributed to the breakup. Yoko was the catalyst that lit the fuse. Like you said, though, at least Paul and John had worked things out before John was murdered. Let that be a lesson to everyone to reconcile with their loved ones now. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.
McCartney interviews just after Lennon passed away are always interesting. He's just that little bit more agitated and will go further on things. He tends to paper over the cracks now. But I love the geezer!
Paul is right. Commercial success is important. He was very successful in the 70s. I read somewhere that he was the most successful artist of the 70s. Not sure what the measure was. But even if a top 5 artist for the decade following the 60s, pretty darn good to have been at the top or near the top for 20 years.
"Love Hurts" or can hurt but at least Paul knows that John loved him! He knew John and understood John. John was different (we all are) and Paul accepted him as he was. I know it must have meant a lot when Yoko told Paul that he loved him after John died.
I read that the first one Yoko called the day after John died was Paul. This was exactly when she told him that John had loved him, so I think it meant so much more to him as John had just been shot the night before...
A very rare good interview with Sir Paul. She interrupts him numerous times, tries to lead him and drops high brow words on him to trip him....and he tolerates all of it. He gives thoughtful and introspective answers. Frankly, I'm astounded. He usually talked so much bullshit to the media that there was speculation from some that he was dead, and that only a Paul fake could possibly act like that.
Seriously! Why can’t people handle the truth! Paul is alive , is Paul! It’s like the moon landings or flat earth society , some people just don’t want to recognise reality !
She might have been rude, but they were pretty straight forward questions that didn't allow any bullshit answers. This is one of the few interviews i've seen with McCartney that showed what Lennons attacks really meant to him.
Paul years later admitted he got depressed when John announced he was leaving the Beatles in '69. George wanted out too, saying it had become unhealthy and unhappy, and he had developed into a solo artist by then. So by 1970 Paul had to go ahead and make it official, but i think he and Ringo wanted the band to go on. That wasnt going to happen when both John and George wanting out.
She meant now that John is dead. The idea being that Yoko knew John so well as to see past his habitual bluster. McCartney often says that he and Lennon were talking regularly on the phone just before he died. Well, maybe. But if you read Lennon's 'Playboy' interview given just a couple of months before his death you see that there's still quite a bit of hostility there.
Yeah, and there's also an interview with Paul somewhere on UA-cam from just before John's death in which Paul says John seems to get annoyed by everything he (Paul) says. 'Close' ??
"But if you read Lennon's 'Playboy' interview given just a couple of months before his death you see that there is still quite a bit of hostility there." Yes, and that was for Yoko's sake. When John was with her, he had to constantly slag Paul publicly. Yoko required it to prove that John loved no one more than her. When he was away from Yoko's sphere of influence, he openly loved and admired Paul again, and even wanted to work with Paul again during the so-called Long Weekend. Back with Yoko, back to knocking Paul. The Playboy interview shows that within earshot of Yoko, he slagged Paul...again. But rebuked her when SHE tried to do it by mocking her saying, "You're still carrying that cross? That was years ago!" In other words, "STFU about Paul! Only I can slag him!"
Always leave them wanting more! The Beatles are one of the few bands to stop at the height of there fame . Most bands just continue singing the same songs almost like a tribute act to themselves.
I just saw this interview for the first time. I noticed when Paul used the expression "Bring in the broads!" the interviewer responds with "What!" The camera is on her back so you don't see her say it and it's very low. She then asks him if that statement was a joke. I think the interviewer was working very hard to make Paul angry or make him look bad.
What Paul is saying is such common sense - it is amazing how many Beatle fans couldn't see this simple and obvious explanation. The Beatles did what they needed to do and retired on top of their game, just like Rocky Marciano. Period. BTW, it is annoying how most of these interviewers have literally zero basic Beatles knowledge and thus ask only lame, cringeworthy questions. "Were you sad the songwriting partnership died when John died ?" And Paul has to patiently explain to her that the songwriting partnership ended when the Beatles broke up.
Interviewer missed the point that John and Paul loved each other and that Paul knew and understood John and even his "bitchiness". Would have been cool if she explored the wonderful parts of the relationship and what sounds like a coming to terms and peace and maybe forgiveness on Paul's part. Thumbs up to Paul for his openness and conduct befitting the gentleman that he is!
I don't know what people think but i think paul and ringo are gentlemen. Never say something bad about their friends behind their backs especially two of them had gone. And there are none of our business why they have to tell us everything.
Paul's role as a member of the band is to be an organizer. Paul kept the Beatles in success which was a tough job. Yes, at times John got a little out of control, but honestly John was within his rights. No telling how much money Paul earned, but regardless this was a band destined for stardom.
What he didn’t share here, is that he and John did reconcile before he died. I’ve heard many other interviews where he shared this. If this woman were really a good interviewer she would have let him talk and explain that but she had her own agenda.
I suspect that whenever John heard a new Paul song, in that decade after the Beatles split up, he was imagining how he might've contributed a line here, a 'yang' to Paul's 'yin' there . . . knowing that their past collaborations had been so magical that they each improved on the others' songs. It's as if John's criticisms were really him saying, "Paul needs my input in order to transcend from 'decent' to magnificent . . . and I need him to do the same for me, generally speaking." As great as each of the 4 Beatles were on their own, they -- when together -- were more than the sum of their parts. As much personal uplift as John may have gotten with Yoko, prioritizing raising Sean then, as a songwriter he must have felt a bit second tier in the post-Beatles years. Even his best solo songs were not quite as resonant as his collaborations in the Beatles. The same goes for Paul, George, and Ringo.
I think the Beatles breakup has really nothing to do with Yuko as everybody tries to blame her I just think all four of them wanted to go separate ways with their music and it just wasn't working out as them being the Beatles trying to put their own touch on whatever songs they were making. I think their talent as the Beatles will always be one of the greatest things but when they went solo they also made some great music on their own with different points of view that's not to say that they still didn't love each other but sometimes you grow apart it's just a fact of life so rather putting out music they really didn't love anymore it was time to make a clean break and go off on their separate ways to become the artist that they had become which were really great artists
I think she helped accelerate the breakup and make it more acrimonious than it had to be. She had to ensure John trashed Paul and thought about him in nothing but negative terms, in order to secure her place as John's "new partner". She was a little too eager to take her place as John's new partner to credibly have had nothing to do with the breakup. Same goes for John's marriage to Cynthia. Yoko had been after John for years before she wrested him away from Cynthia Come to think of it, same with England. Yoko ensured he never went back there as long as he lived. .Personal growth is one thing, but this was more like a death as he became someone completely unrecognizable. And those little matchy-poo outfits she had him in, where they both had those witch hats, both wearing white suits, at one point they both had the same haircut, ew.
Yoko did not break up the Beatles, John did. He decided to leave, he decided he didn't want the band anymore; Yoko didn't particularly want him to leave the band but HE decided it wasn't enough anymore. I'm fed up with people blaming Yoko; how could one woman possibly break up an entire band ffs.
The Beatles were the best group of all time. My favorite Beatle is Paul McCartney. My second favorite Beatle was John. They had great voices and could really sing great together. I loved all of their songs that they sang together. I didn't like it when they started experimenting with drugs. That was not the Beatles that I loved. I also didn't agree with John when he said that they were more popular than Jesus. Jesus will always be number one in my life. Jesus is God. And I believe in him. The Beatles were my favorite musical group. I still love Paul McCartney's music. He is awesome.
Pete Morales basically John was saying the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. But not necessarily more important. It was an off the cuff comment. Not meant to be malicious. People took it too far.

Good point I would too but I would travel back in time to the 60s and proboly marry one of them!!:P
John Miller I bumped into Paul McCartney 2 weeks ago on Penny Lane.He was filming a carpool episode with a English comedian James corden. That's twice I've bumped into him now..

Paul is just very admirable guy. Paul is a Legend through and through.💥
He certainly was ,,,,,,,
Some interviewers are so intrusive and this one is one of them. How he kept his patience on this one is admirable.
It’s as if she wants to devour him.
Great to hear the old stories Paul, I'm from the 60s so saw the Beatles from start, when I was about 16, we went to a friends house during school lunch hour and played the track Anna, with a snare drum and sang along to the song, and others, great great memories Paul, we then started a school band.....
I can relate to Paul.Sometimes I feel like My close friends mean more to me a lot more than I mean to them :(.Anyone else ever feel that way.
Next Question.
Good one, Paul.
That was a good question...now answer this which one was you...or was the interview with the idiot who impersonate everyone...
He’s so candid and understanding and just such a cool guy he’s take on John it’s just amazing what a great interview
I really appreciate how honest he is in this interview.
He beats around the bush! He is never honest, he has an image to maintain! Its all repeated stories and false modesty
Paul has always been a gentleman, intelligent with a good heart and great sense of humour. I wish I had a friend like Paul.
Thank you Man I appreciate it
He's so obviously annoyed but still charms his way through it all.
Wow very surprised at his candidness and the quality of the interview
PURE CLASS that bloke from Liverpool•~🎶🎸🎤🎵🎶🎹🎙♥️
Some of McCartney's best work was in Wings. What a phenomenal band and an extraordinary performer and song writer.
What's ur fsv song from them, mine is def spin it on or Getting closer (especially in the last 1/3)
agreed... Love Take Me Down to the Streets
"when someone like john lennon says you play muzak it hurts". nice glimpse of paul showing his true feelings for john, the whole younger kid looking up to the older talented band mate that was john. only person in the world who could hurt paul. in his mind, his only equal.
Paul started it first , insulting John ,so he deserves what he got, nobody can sing like John Lennon,, How do you sleep
Although its a bit cringey and a bit cruel,I like to see Paul asked and answer questions like this, because you start to see a real insight which you rarely get to see with Paul because he's so media savvy. This isnt anywhere near the best but there are very few interviews where we see the really real Paul McCartney.
And those were ALL before 1966?
I agree totally cringey
I love the sense of humor of Paul, and the way he says things like, he's so gentle, but I will think...well she are a bit silly
I had seen some terrible interviews to Paul McCartney , but he managed himself by giving general information . We will never know the whole story.
+Maxula Pretto couldn't have said it better. he or ringo will NEVER COME CLEAN ABOUT THE BEATLES,AND WHAT HAPPENED BEHIND CLOSED doors.

he is so adorable.added to my playlist i loved it!
Paul your music was ,and is still superb, John said those things to hurt, he knew you are a giant of music
Yes, he damn well knew it.
I once read that John Lennon told yoko ono if anything ever happens to me I want you to contact 2 people: aunt Mimi and Paul McCartney.
The interviewer is Barbara Frum, a journalist who worked for the CBC. She died in 1992.
McCartney interviews just after Lennon passed away are always interesting. He's just that little bit more agitated and will go further on things. He tends to paper over the cracks now. But I love the geezer!
I love his song about how she's buying a stairway to heaven or something.

2:06 - 2:18 just became my all time favorite quote by Sir Paul.
Paul is right. Commercial success is important. He was very successful in the 70s. I read somewhere that he was the most successful artist of the 70s. Not sure what the measure was. But even if a top 5 artist for the decade following the 60s, pretty darn good to have been at the top or near the top for 20 years.
Good job by the interviewer. She got more out of Paul than most of the other interviewers.
I like and appreciate and admire McCartney so much.
4:00 He was so chill to answer that. 😌
They all loved each other unconditionally until the end and in ways that even most families do not (as per Ringo in an interview).
Paul and John were true soul mates!

James Paul McCartney died in car crash on September 11 1966 and was replaced by William (Billy). This is the truth no matter what!
Did anybody else notice a bit of a smirk on Paul’s face after he said how Yoko had told him that”you know,John loved you”?
He smiles in the beginning snd it looks like him when he was super young
McCartney is articulate, measured and gentlemanly
UA-cam is a great historical resource for any fan of any band but for me its the beatles
Yes this was Paul number 13 I think. They all look different . The fabricated four
Seriously! Why can’t people handle the truth! Paul is alive , is Paul! It’s like the moon landings or flat earth society , some people just don’t want to recognise reality !
She might have been rude, but they were pretty straight forward questions that didn't allow any bullshit answers. This is one of the few interviews i've seen with McCartney that showed what Lennons attacks really meant to him.
excellent answer mr mccartney
Yes my right ear enjoyed this too
Paul years later admitted he got depressed when John announced he was leaving the Beatles in '69. George wanted out too, saying it had become unhealthy and unhappy, and he had developed into a solo artist by then. So by 1970 Paul had to go ahead and make it official, but i think he and Ringo wanted the band to go on. That wasnt going to happen when both John and George wanting out.
The Beatles grew up. America did not.
"Only Yoko Ono can now tell you 'John liked you' ".
What the hell was this woman smoking.
'Close' ??
"But if you read Lennon's 'Playboy' interview given just a couple of months before his death you see that there is still quite a bit of hostility there."
Yes, and that was for Yoko's sake.
What happens in public does in no way reflect what happens in private.
JonathanAnon one of the worst interviews I’ve seen!
Yoko played a major role & to a slight extent Linda .The wives of the two chief Beatles played a major role.
Paul is just so cute I love him
Always leave them wanting more!
Poor Paul, he really got picked on, but he is a great talent and I’d be lost without his music 🙏💗

Beautiful friend
Whoa That interview went sideways, Paul was like (hang in there baby)
Paul is such a kind, true and talented person, it annoys me that he has to endure the rubbish that comes with fame.
Well Billy chose to become Paul ,,,,
Paul is a bit more candid here than in later interviews.

@@p0llenp0ny You were glad she's dead. Still feel that way?

I love Paul.
