It definitely started as a dumpster fire 🗑🔥after the initial staining - but I think I was able to salvage the job with the gel stain. Let me know what you think of the final result and THANKS FOR WATCHING!
I’m going to be doing the same thing really soon in a house I bought as well. Not just the stairs, but ripping out the glorious maroon carpet and the Christmas green carpet in the living room and main bedroom. Can’t wait!!!
LOl aaahhhh the 60’s and 70’s where people really gave the house a pop of color with rugs. At least you avoided the dreaded Golden Girls rose pink carpet from the 80’s! Best of luck with your upgrades.
Love your video. Just a tip I received from an old woodworker. Do not wipe extra glue off. It put into the grain outside of seam. Leave it and sand it off when dry he says.
This was very helpful! I ripped off my carpet started chopping off the edges and was struggling to get the end pieces off. I have 10 stairs that are pretty similar to yours but didnt have any idea how to do bullnose even though I own a router!. watching your video helped to make me feel more comfortable to try it out on my own.
Thanks for the video! I was thinking of using 1/4 inch plywood, but actually could not find any instructions over stair bases like I have, which is very similar to yours. Now I know it is possible and not insane. Thanks again and looks great!
I have to say that after watching a few of your videos, I am actively sharing your videos since you are beyond articulate and explanatory compared to some contractors. Nobody breaks down the importance of prep and anatomy. Bravo
Awesome video, breaking it down and making it easy to follow and feel confident doing! Can't wait to watch the whole series, I'm a couple videos in and it's amazing! I'm looking at getting a paint sprayer, just curious which one you use?
Beautiful job! Lots of work though. After I finished my stair remodel using red oak treads and MDF risers, they were beautiful but way too slippery to walk on, so I had to buy some tacky rubber and cut for treads.
yeah of course, it looks great. a lot of little detail, i do not think i could do this as well as you, i know that i cannot. you got a lot more expertise than me. but yes, its looks great, i want my stairs to look like that.
Long time - No see! That staircase looks great. Regarding the screw comment you made, screws are what one uses to screw up a carpet installation! Your diligence has paid off. I didn't realize wood like oak was still rare up there; but the pine will work especially with the unique treatment of stain and poly, considering your costs. I hope that by now, a year after the work you will return that beautiful battery powered nailer to your BIL; if you haven't, I would include a gallon of fresh oysters or some great crabs along with the return. Start saving your pennies or hinting since Christmas is so near :). How much more footage of projects over the past year are pending? I don't remember seeing the basement rehab yet.I'll check your archives. Later.
Hey Patrick! I hear you on the screwed up carpet installation lol. And you will be glad to hear that the nailer has been returned haha But the Oysters might not be a bad idea either. I have the whole basement remodel coming soon! I should start releasing those this month. Thanks again for the continued support!
Oh no, your stairwell is nowhere is ugly as mine I don't have walls on either side and I don't have backboards on the stairs and I'm on disability and I could use some help, but I don't have any help.
What are you talking about, the perfect human. I know that someone or a chicken walked over your head, but here is your answer.. this is not a fail it was a win. Is really good to be kind it doesn't cost you anything
@@AndrewThronImprovements so would that be considered like the subfloor equivalent? I know nothing about construction, which is why I’m asking a dumb question

This was an amazing change. House is looking great!
Nice way to make your basement stairs look a ton better without the huge price tag. I was thinking about how to redo mine, and this is great.
I’m glad you liked it! Good luck with your project!

I second that emotion 💯
Thanks for the step-by-step process! This helps a lot.
Great content , beautiful job will follow this guide as I'm about to tackle my stairs thanks so much ....🇨🇦
Oh, this is very helpful as I am going to do the same for my house👏👏
I love the ideas of a paint sprayer
Great job 👏
Thanks Kevin, appreciate it!
Great DIY! Thanks for sharing.
For the price, that's a banger of a job.
Appreciate it! I hope it holds up over time - but for

Love it bro. Think I’m going to do this to a rental
You should! Thanks for watching and let me know how it turns out!

Thank you!

Great work & truly inexpensive 🎉
What ya share is Awesome 👏 and much appreciated thank You
Great video!
Multi tool metal cutting blade. Cuts flush all the staples. Just what I use.
Amazing ❤❤❤! The info and how-to are just what I was looking for. Wish me luck and I could use 🙏 too. 😂
Very impressive

Did you cut with the grain for 8 of them and across the grain for a couple of them?

Your home is going to be beautiful when you are done with the remodel.
Great finish, maybe summarize the cost at the end for viewers. We appreciate good editing
I appreciate it! And I have the breakdown in the video description, but I will try to add it "on screen" for future videos. Thanks for watching!
RE: The screw, check out the Squeeeeek No More screw system that eliminates squeaks under carpet
Just wondering…. Are your stairs slippery with that finish?
So did you just stay down there until it dried?
I’m still down there dude - send help. Haha there is an exterior door in the basement.
why didn't you stain before installing ?
Right
Can you give us an update on how are the stairs holding so far?
So far so good! Only issue is that dropped something on one of the treads and it dented pretty bad. Other than that, I think they look pretty good 👍
@@AndrewThronImprovements You can try to put a wet paper towel on it and use an iron to steam it to raise it back up
They could have used the screws for the tack strip. Usually nails would be used though
generally speaking, when the threads stick past the stringer it looks bad. but for a 200$ looks much better.
I would much rather put the stain and the polyurethane on before putting the risers and the runners on. Polyurethane takes 24 to 48 hours to dry.
I think it's some waste of labor on terrible piece of lumber. otherwise, good job
No one uses a screw to hold down carpet people use tax stripping
Landlord Special
Those are not stringers their called skirts
sooooo much glue and chaulking.... need less then half of all of that. Also for staples, use side cutters and twist.
I wondered about that as well, especially if the next owner wants to change something. Is the glue necessary at all, or would nails suffice?

U picked the wrong color
All it will take is a pair of socks and inattentiveness to cause a major accident down those stairs.
You need some tread or grip. Something.
$200 ... but with the skills of a contractor!
way to much cutting/
U would think 😭
So basically this was a 'fail'.
What are you talking about, the perfect human. I know that someone or a chicken walked over your head, but here is your answer.. this is not a fail it was a win. Is really good to be kind it doesn't cost you anything
How?
Just curious, why didnt you choose to demo the old treads?
Hi! The old “treads” were actually the 2”x6” lumber used for the original construction.
@@AndrewThronImprovements so would that be considered like the subfloor equivalent? I know nothing about construction, which is why I’m asking a dumb question
Looks great !
If you go with new treads over the old, you still have the work of cutting the front off the old, so there’s that.
Don't forget the 500+$ of tools needed for the job too
Fair point!
