Polly Brown - Do You Know Where You're Going To - 1975

- Polly Brown was the original lead vocalist for Pickettywitch and Sweet Dreams. She eventually went on to become a solo recording artist, and in her spare time was a rather fantastic session singer.
She has one of the best voices/styles ever!!! I miss her!
Never fully acknowledged as the great singer that she was
I discovered her by accident a few months ago and I have to agree with you. She is wonderful.
Polly where did you go......you had so much more to give....such a beautyful voice
She didn't go away Sean, had 4 albums after Pickettywitch, and many singles but for some reason beyond me never made the top where she belonged
So agree with you Alan; 3 LP's within 4 years after leaving PW and lots of singles but mysteriously never
charted. Polly must have felt very disappointed, she was almost alone mid-70's as a UK act in getting out quality soul music, remarkably each track sounding different to the last, no duplication.
As I noticed on that ATV interview that she did not have sharp elbows or throw her weight about with
record label bosses when she declared...''I am not a ruthless kind of person''. Maybe she was just too nice for what I can only assume was a very competitive, cut throat business. x
POLLY PASSED AWAY SOME TIME AGO
Scott Denny Rubbish. Get your facts right before making such a terrible statement.

Oh no! That is so sad. Polly seems to have the voice to sing anything.
The name Polly Brown should be up there with the greats. Great rendition of this song.
Wow, this is truly an amazing performance, love it !
what a stunning vioce, I hope you are still going!
Unappreciated talent love you polly x
Never saw this singer on telly what a talent, Polly Brown your great 🙂👍
What a dreamboat
she is just fantastic...a Mexican fan, love UK singers, of this quality. hi from Monterrey Mexico
Love you Polly Brown!!!
Best singer in the world
polly has soul the best singer ever to come out of the uk j vincent edwards
Polly has a beautiful tone to her voice, although she's a mimic. .Both my favourite female singers from the UK have the surname, Brown, but I have to put Sam Brown ahead of Polly., Sorry!
@@Catwallager Both are very talented singers, with different voices.
@@scousesonata Indeed they are.
Polly indeed was a Diana Ross soundalike. But she also was a Jean Terrell soundalike! Her hit "Up in a Puff of Smoke" sounds so much like Jean Terrelll radio listeners thought they were listening to a new Supremes record.
W.B.......If Polly was also a Jean Terrell soundalike, it was probably because Jean Terrell was a Diana Ross soundalike in the first place !! 8-15-17
Beautiful.
Polly looks great
She's bloody gorgeous!
Diablo esta mujer es increíble 😍
lets not be silly here polly has a great voice period ,and sounding like dianna ross ,and dion warwick is hardly a crime ,thanks polly for the memories
IM 55 and when I was seven I thought Pollty was a godess and nothings changed 48yrs later.
edit-Polly
Well I am 64 I think she was wonderful ..
@@malprofit1 is she still alive
Is polly still alive
Wow. When I first heard this playing on the radio circa 1975 in Canada, I thought this was by Diana Ross formerly of the Supremes. Only until I stumbled on this UA-cam page did I find out this isn't Diana Ross!
Diana Ross did have a huge hit with this song in 1975, as the theme song to the movie Mahogany, in which she played the lead role. I guess Polly Brown's version was overshadowed due to Ross being so famous. But Polly's recording is no less beautiful.
Thelma Houston did it first, though with different lyrics...then Diana Ross did it; re-written and produced for her by Michael Masser who wrote the original lyrics. Brown simply stole the whole arrangement from Diana Ross.
Huh? You're joking right. Diana Ross had a number one record with this song. This is someone who is trying to sound like Diana.
@@TruthSerum101 Correct!
An excellent recording, prefer it to the original. Thanks for posting.
Brilliant. Never heard Polly's version before. The original recording was by Thelma Houston who was on Motown at the time. Di heard it, Di wanted it, Di got it!
***** Thelma's version had different lyrics. The Jennifer Lopez version is excellent.
Not necessarily true. Suzanne De Passe heard it and thought it would be perfect for Diana's upcoming film Mahogany, and so introduced her to it.
And what ''else'' did Di do to get it?
@@lennylaa1686 Polished Berry Gordy's Jerry helmet...
@@knockshinnoch1950 I wonder if lovely Polly ever had
to do anything like that?
great voice.
I've always loved this song, its melody and lyrics, but must admit I didn't know of this version (the original) until now. It's always been a "Diana Ross song" to me. Nice!
She sings it just like Diana.
@@georgecundari2 much better
There is now a Facebook page for Polly. "Polly Browne - The Best of Everything"
she never made it in the states just up in smoke. she has a soulful voice.
I first discovered her in 1970 fronting Pickettywitch on Top of the Pops (BBC). I was 15 and loved Motown and American soul music. When Polly went solo in early '73 she released some great tracks and covers and there was always much more to her than the excellent Up, Up, Up
What a great song!
Polly Browne , LA major cantante por mucho .
Tonight, Polly, you're going to be Dionne Warwick! And that's no bad thing. Awesome.
She's a soul music goddess, a national hidden treasure
but she seemed to vanish from the music scene from mid-1977.
For the next 34 years, only a modest amount of recordings were
ever made; long spells in the wilderness,..83 - 94, 96 - 09. V. sad.
Nice voice I like her songs
Needed more ''killer'' hits, tbh.
Jah will be waiting here. 🎶
Before we begin to make comparisons between the two artists, it's crucially important
to point out that Miss Ross had been on the world stage for a solid decade churning
out hit after hit before Polly came along. In truth, there were no killer hits after
''Up, Up, Up In A Puff Of Smoke'' late 1974 in America....really, her label GTO have some explaining to do as all their other artists hit gold dust.
Hi Monterrey1952. My wife is from Monterrey and I am from England. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and this is the great music that I remember from the past. This version seems nicer than Diana Ross even!
Saludos!
No harsh edges lovely voice .Polly and Kiki Dee should have been top of the tree ... caught a tench the other day bit small threw it back
A Brilliant Version, it has had 76 Thousand views so that tells us so. Polly sings this with the Star sound Orchestra, would anyone know if she sings any other songs with them??? Also the original listing
states that she was also a session singer, could anyone comment
on any of these numbers that may be inclued & where they might be obtainable, Thanks
Great song 👍🎶
Lovely voice!
Very nice music,
you can buy this song by Polly on various download sites ( in the UK anyway ) but it`s under the artist name Starsound Orchestra - Do You Know Where Youre Going To ( from Mahogany )
Polly could have been a huge star.
She was a class act, she deserved better and I think it hurts her to this day that
she never achieved global recognition as she should have done.
@@lennylaa1686 Possibly, but I think she did pretty well anyway. A good musical legacy.
@@lennylaa1686It is so sad when so much cr*p was played on the radio back in the 70's & 80's poor Polly never got a look in
" sweet voice " iconic. Overtones of " dianna ross " and. " karen carpender !" ( legend ) 👏
Oh bugger, I'm still in love~~~~~
You and me both - you have very good taste sir!
Fantastic, Polly was always the best but never properly promoted at the time, sob
What a Voice, She kind of attacks this Song and makes it her own, like so many say should have been so so bigger, still what do we know, She is up there with Karen Carpenter, Jean Terrell. Does anybody have the Capital Radio Vynal Album, Polly Browne with the Phil Denny's Orchestra "River Deep Mountain High" ?
ME! Lucky me.
@@scousesonata Lucky You, Have been searching this for years, any chance of a CD copy, i may even have Polly Material to exchange. By the way What a Football Team you have up there. Alan

I had the biggest crush on this Picketty Witch girl. Yes, more so than Dusty Spingfield.
Easily the best part of this are these photos from her days in PW...she looks so
stunningly attractive, especially pictured with the 2 dogs and also @ 1-15.
Her absolute peak is in the bluegutter upload of ''Summertime Feeling''
on Disco '71, looking like the quintessential ''English Rose'', wow, so pretty and
incredibly drop dead gorgeous from July, 1971!
Thanks for your comments Greg ,many of which I agree with.Clearly you love Polly as much as I do.Not just for her looks, at 71, she is still stunning but for her gorgeous soulful voice. There's an incredible repertoire album of her best work just just itching to be released but it probably would need a pile of money and a lot of faith.and should include her later blues' work "Freedom" and Blue Night "- sublime, with that brilliant Greg Watkins (RIP) guitar. I emailed her once and incredibly she replied. That is one email I won't be deleting!.What a beautiful woman!! John
Polly suffered like so many who went solo after success with bands like Eve Graham of the New Seekers should have had the best material but never did .
I THINK IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS BETTER IN WAYS THAN DIANA ROSS'S VERSION DID.
Pmsl. Funniest thing I’ve read all year.
definetly true, I`ve heard this song many times before but it has never reached me like this version
Mi piace
Polly delivers a song better than anyone, including Miss Ross ,and looks amazing too !!
In the early seventies from Pickettywitch to the jazz singing she does now,Polly is just as good as Diana ,but didnt get the breaks, but its just my opinion Clive.take care mate
@@johnowen5686 Just as good? What she does here is on a level Miss Ross never touched
She sounds like Diana Ross brilliant rendition never given the credit as a great singer . Raz
Polly spent a lot of time listening to Diana Ross who at that time was the No1 female vocalist in the world.
Very impressive, I think
Excellent although I thought the correct title of the song was Theme From Mahogany. `Do You Know Where Im Going To` is a sub-title
polly brown does not sound like dione warwick, dione warwick sounds like polly brown
Diana Ross
Don't know if Warwick ever sang this song. But it is a little better than the Diana Ross version.
Dionne Warwick sounds nothing like this woman who is trying her best to sound like Diana Ross and failing.
Better than Diana's 🌺 🙏
Was Helen Cook an Alias for Polly Brown - I know she did "Million Copy Hit Songs Made Famous By Diana Ross" as 'Suzy Miller' but haven't found any other connection other than this track linking Polly to the Diana Ross EP ?
Linda
I cant stop associating this to the eerie ending of a horror film and idek y
Yes I know....
Anywhere close to you!
the version that diana ross recorded was used in the movie mohagany.
Did Polly record this track in 1975 and was it on her ''Special Delivery'' album...
or maybe it was a ''B'' side?
IT A SHAME SHE DID,NT DUET WITH WARWICK OR ROSS,WE ALL KNOW WHO WINS THIS ONE,LOVE YA POLLY BROWN.
US audience....who is she?
She was a Diana Ross sound alike ..which explains why she never broke through big in the States...we had the original diva, no need for a knock-off
How ridiculous can you be! Polly's talents speaks for itself! A league of her own!
Eeb Haerd True! There's only room for one Diana Ross!....Polly was a poor imitation...and nowhere near as beautiful as Diana!
If Polly was regarded as a bit of a mimic or copycat,...it may have damaged her reputation...may have lost credibility.
Polly is more versatile than Diana, and Polly has such great timing.
This the original?
Her voice is great and the arrangement is fine, but does anyone else think this mix is off? It sounds like she is singing through a cheesecloth....something just not right.
HI MAY I ASK U ABOUT BWD =BILL WELLINGS = FINEST WORK = SUPEREMES STYLE SMASH HITS MFP5184 LP 1971

Listen to this on my bed in jail 😂🙏
Our very own Diana Ross, but more fabulous!
Sounds like Dione Warwick.
Who recorded this song first? Polly or Diana Ross?
Diana Ross, but Polly's version is wonderful.
I like Diana's version
Actually, Thelma Houston recorded the first version of it in 1973. Slightly different lyrics but more or less the same song.
She sounds very much like Ross, but it's weird to hear her sing "Do you like the things that life HAS showing you." --very awkward to hear.
DionnesDiscography Yeah I cringed when I heard that and tried convincing myself she said “Do you like the things that life has shown you” but idk lol
Di deliberately put those lyrics in to trip up any copycat merchants.
@@brianblanco254 if you listen carefully she sings 'that life has shown you', drawing out the word 'show-n'
The UK's answer to Diana Ross? I think so.
I think NOT! She sounds far more like Dionne than Diana on this anyway
@@jonsa270 totally agree with you. Far more like Dionne than Diana.
Similarities, yes. But originality guarantees longevity.
Polly sounds like a Diana Ross/ Dionne Warwick/ Jean Terrell tribute act more than an original artist. Like she’s imitating those voices more than celebrating her own. Like she’s a demo singer for Motown.
This recording sounds like Dionne Warwick’s odd covers on Solid Gold. She could make the weekly hit seem weird and unidentifiable.
Diana’s version is the gold standard of this song. It’s windblown hair, butterfly like eyelashes and perfect bone structure in song form. Polly’s vowels are not easy on the ears. Her version just isn’t as pretty.
ouch Phil, so mean -spirited, never said it was my theory, I said "Reported in The Daily Defender & Ebony" that's all don't get so bent out of shape.
Legal, mas ainda prefiro a Diana Ross.
Decent attempt but you'd be hard pushed to improve on the original Motown.
