To honour one of Urdu literature’s greatest writers, Saadat Hasan Manto, and the respected Urdu humorist and poet Ibn-e-Insha (whose death anniversaries fall in January), this session of Joy of Urdu- Lahore Chapter, was dedicated to them.
Dr. Arfa Zehra , our long-time patron and advisor, who has conducted a number of unforgettable sessions for Joy of Urdu before (available on our a Facebook page), discussed the writers, and read excerpts from their works.
This was a well-attended, well-organized event that caused us to be flooded with messages of thanks. Thanks goes to the incomparable Arfa apa, and also to Aleem Zubair, one our advisors, who is also heading our Lahore Chapter, and the wonderful team at Annemarie Schimmel Haus and their lavish hospitality.

After Munshi Premchand, perhaps Manto was the most cactivating short story writer of Indian sub-continent. And Dr Arfa's recitation of Manto's short story 'Mozel' is simply brilliant! I wish in her next attempts she may read 'Eidgaah' of Premachnd.

Dominated the cards in Urdu
Paigham-e-Massarat

Dawatnama-e-Valima
Nikah -e-Nifs-un-nahar
This was the time
When medium of instruction in schools was Urdu
It was time to call
Bawarchikhana, deewankhana,
Ammijan Abbajan
Khalajaan, Aapajaan
Pyali Tashteri
Rikaabi Mushquaab
The winds of change started blowing
Steadily, regularly, strongly
Wealth started coming into families
Poor families moved level 1 above
Level 1 middle class moved to Level 2
Level 2 moved to Level 3
Level 3 moved to Level 5 aborad
English schools started replacing Urdu schools
Winds of change picked up speed
Completely wiping off Urdu from everywhere
Ammijan Abbajan replaced by Mummy Daddy
Bawarchikhana deewankhana replaced by kitchen, drawing room
Rikaabi Mushquaab replaced by plates
Pyali Tashteri replaced by cup saucer
Now
New generation born after 1970
knows not what these words mean
The Gen Y knows not it's Meeras
Knows not what was it's rich heritage
Now we have
Hundreds and thousands
Urdu illiterates
Brandishing their English
With no regret on
Not knowing their mother tongue
Chatta Bazar's
Urdu printing press fallen silent
All machines became obsolete
Chatta Bazar is crying
The last calligrapher breathing his last

It is a beautiful rendition by Dr Arfa. Lekin kahiñ kahiñ aurat ki fitri haya beech meiñ hee gayi aur original text ya to badal diya ya kuch hissa nahi padha. Mantoo ka hee bayaan hai jab maine Asmat Chaghtai se uski maarkatul-araa afsana 'lihaaf' ke silsile mein baat ki to woh 'niri aurat' nikli. Aik dum sharma gayi
